Alwyn Petrus Geyser is a Professional GISc Practitioner with 17 years of experience in the South African Navy and as an assistant lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch. He has extensive experience in GIS, remote sensing, data analysis and management. As a senior military manager, he oversaw 130 students and planned exercises. CAREER SUMMARY

• Together with Commander (Doctor) Bezuidenhout established a Geophysics research group.
• Provided GIS support to the Geophysics research group at the University of Stellenbosch, Faculty of Military
Science, which included:
o Data collection and capturing
o Map Production
o Data exploration

o Spatial Interpolation
o Remote sensing of vegetation and soil
o Image analysis and interpretation
• Involved in research in Geophysics where we developed new radiation detection methods. Our research
results provided new insights in palaeontology and the geography of areas, it also provided insight on the
effects of radiation on population groups.
• Will complete Masters Degree in Military Geography (Geophysics) in 2016.

• Provided Environmental Management support to the local Naval Base.
• Spearheaded a Community Service Project in the Military Academy to upgrade the play parks in the
residential areas as well as present academic assistance to children at a local children’s home.

Senior Military Manager 2008 – 2010
• Managed between 67 and 130 Military Academy students per year in terms of career planning, professional
military development and report writing. Responsible for the physical and mental welfare of students by
creating a conducive environment for learning as well as ensuring that every student passes his/her
quarterly fitness evaluation.
• Plan, execute and debrief two, week long, military exercises a year as well as smaller one day excursions.
Planning involves organising finances, transport, accommodation, time tables and programmes for the
exercise, logistics. Took full responsibility for the safety of the students during these exercises.
• Received a Military Academy Commandant’s Commendation certificate for exemplary dedication and
commendable service.
Training and Environmental Manager 2005 – 2007
• Developed policies and procedures for environmental management to be in line with international standards
as well as implementing and managing these policies and procedures.
• Plan, execute and debrief the Deep Sea Navigation course for 12 South African Navy students bi-annually.
While on course I am responsible for the students in all aspects, which include military discipline, social and
physical welfare, financial claims, logistics and accommodation.
• Improved the students pass rate from 50% to above 90% for the course.
• Presented the subject Sailings, this teaches a student how to mathematically calculate courses and positions
of vessels to navigate around the globe. Also presented the rules for navigating and driving ships at sea as
well as navigation equipment for other courses.
Watchkeeping Officer 2002 – 2005
• Served as a watchkeeping officer on board the SAS DRAKENSBERG, then the flagship of the South African
Navy. As watchkeeping officer data collection and analysis under stressful situations are extremely
important. One has to act swiftly and decisively to ensure the safety of the crew members and ship.
• Acted as Operations Manager of the naval contingent for the anti-poaching operations ran collectively by the
South African Police Service and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. Responsible for
writing daily reports and deploying and directing the naval crew.
• Managed 10 crew members’ careers, writing individual reports and assessments. Responsible for the morale
and safety of the crew members when on deployments.
• Served as a safety officer during cargo, replenishment at sea and helicopter operations, where the safety of
the crew members is of paramount importance.
• Successfully deployed to Haiti for two months to provide logistical supplies to the country as well as provide
a safety platform for the President for the Republic of South Africa.
• Successfully planned and executed the theoretical exams for future watchkeeping officers.
