Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is for you to have a
face to face
experience with an artistic work and then write about your response to it. This means that you must witness something live, i.e., in bodily form rather than in virtual form (a movie, book, internet site would not work).
You must attend this experience this semester
. Possible experiences you could pursue:
Art museum or established art gallery exhibit, including the Collin Arts Gallery
Dance concert at college level or professional
Theater performance at college level or professional
Requirements:
Use good judgment in choosing an art experience. Your little niece’s ballet recital is not going to give you an experience that relates to the content of this course. A natural history museum, science museum, or historical exhibit is
not
appropriate. Do not write about work by a person who you know personally. Do not write about works on campus, which are not in the Arts Gallery. You must visit an art museum, art gallery, or theater or dance performance space!!!!
Format:
Your paper must be typed!
You must turn in a paper copy to me and submit a copy to turnitin via Canvas.
I will not grade a paper unless I have a paper copy and a turnitin submission. The recommended number of words is
850 words minimum

Content:
Act as if you are writing for an audience who hasn’t seen or experienced the artwork(s) or performance. Your reader (me) is only able to experience the work(s) through your words. It is your responsibility to look at the work(s) as objectively as possible and articulate these findings to me. Your reader depends on YOU to make the appropriate word choices, to consider what the artist may or may not be doing. You should avoid reading anything about the work other than: the title, the artist’s name, and the material used. The whole purpose of this assignment is to help you to learn how to trust your own abilities to observe, using your own senses, and make conclusions.
You must tell your reader where you saw the work(s), who created it, and the title. If it is a performance, you must give the name of the theater or dance company, the place where you saw it, and the director/choreographer.

The Invention of Cubism: Braque’s Partnership with Picasso
When the French painter Georges Braque [brahk] (1882–1963) first saw Les Demoiselles, in December 1907, he said that he felt burned, “as if someone were drinking gasoline and spitting fire.” He was, like Picasso, obsessed with Cézanne, so much so that he planned to paint the following summer in Cézanne country in the south of France. When he returned to Paris in September, he brought with him a series of landscapes, among them Houses at l’Estaque (Fig. 14.10). Picasso was fascinated with their spatial ambiguity and cube-like shapes. Note in particular the central house, where (illogically) the two walls that join at a right angle are shaded on both sides of the corner yet are similarly illuminated. And the angle of the roofline does not meet at the corner, thus flattening the roof. Details of windows, doors, and moldings have been eliminated, as have the lines between planes, so that one plane seems to merge with the next in a manner reminiscent of Cézanne. The tree that rises on the left seems to merge at its topmost branch into the distant houses. The curve of the bush on the left echoes that of the tree, and its palmlike leaves are identical to the trees rising between the houses behind it. The structure of the foreground mirrors that of the houses. All this serves to flatten the composition even as the lack of a horizon causes the whole composition to appear to roll forward toward the viewer rather than recede in space.

Glossary Terms
The following are glossary terms with which you need to become familiar and to utilize within your work this week. · Abstract Expressionism
. Also known as the New York School. The first major American avant-garde movement, Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York City in the 1940s. The artists produced abstract paintings that expressed their state of mind and that they hoped would strike emotional chords in viewers. The movement developed along two lines: gestural abstraction and chromatic abstraction.
· Action painting
. Also called gestural abstraction. The kind of Abstract Expressionism practiced by Jackson Pollock, in which the emphasis was on the creation process, the artist's gesture in making art. Pollock poured liquid paint in linear webs on his canvases, which he laid out on the floor, thereby physically surrounding himself in the painting during its creation.
· Assemblage
. An artwork constructed from already existing objects.
· Chromatic abstraction
. A kind of Abstract Expressionism that focused on the emotional resonance of color, as exemplified by the work of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko.
· Color field painting
. A variant of Post-Painterly Abstraction in which artists sought to reduce painting to its physical essence by pouring diluted paint onto unprimed canvas, allowing these pigments to soak into the fabric, as exemplified by the work of Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis.
· Conceptual art
. An American avant-garde art movement of the 1960s that asserted that the "artfulness" of art lay in the artist's idea rather than its final expression.
· Deconstruction
. An analytical strategy developed in the late 20th century according to which all cultural "constructs" (art, architecture, and literature) are "texts." People can read these texts in a variety of ways, but they cannot arrive at fixed or uniform meanings. Any interpretation can be valid, and readings differ from time to time, place to place, and person to person. For those employing this approach, deconstruction means destabilizing established meanings and interpretations while encouraging subjectivity and individual differences.
· Earthworks
. An American art form that emerged in the 1960s. Often using the land itself as their material, Environmental artists construct monuments of great scale and minimal form. The video describe two paintings, one by John Everlett Millias and the other by Barnett Newman. John’s painting was used as an example of a representational piece, while Barnett’s is an example of an abstract piece. Both paintings were beautiful, however I found that representational piece to be more appealing to me.
In the video the narrators express some of their opinions, some I agree while others I disagree..

Handout: Using Quotes Effectively
For this assignment, you may cite course texts informally, using parenthetical
citation (as in the examples below). However, if you choose to bring in any
outside texts or materials, you should provide full citation information,
including a Works Cited page. In general, you may use the citation format of
your choice (MLA-style, Chicago style, etc.), but you must use it correctly and
consistently.
Regular quotes (whether complete sentences or snippets of text) should always
appear in quotation marks – except for long citations (four lines or more),
which should presented as block quotes, indented and single-spaced, but without
quotation marks.
What is most important is to integrate quotes and other authors’ ideas into your
text in a clear and thoughtful way. Rather than simply dropping in a quote, it
is much better to set it up, in order to indicate whose quote it is, to
introduce necessary information and context, and to situate it in your analysis.
Do not assume that a quote can simply “speak for itself.” After a quote, it is
useful to parse out the key terms and assumptions – and, if you choose to, to
question them.
When you set up a quote, try to avoid using “says” (e.g. “Sontag says that …”).
It is too informal, and also incorrect, as we are generally referring to written
sources. Find good specific verbs to use instead: argues, proposes, concludes,
describes, outlines, suggests, etc.
Incorporating Quotes into your revised essay will take some work. You have to
decide what is most important to you in the readings, and what points or
arguments most resonate with you. And of course, you may agree or disagree with
the quotes or points that you choose. To integrate them will probably require
not simply extending but also rearranging your essay somewhat, and perhaps
rethinking or revising your own argument or analysis.
EXAMPLE 1:
Diane Arbus described the camera as “a kind of license” that allowed her to
transgress social boundaries and have access to people’s intimate lives. As she
notes, “A lot of people, they want to be paid that much attention and it’s a
reasonable kind of attention to be paid” (Arbus, p. 3). Thus, in a portrait like
Young man with curlers at home on West 20th Street, NY (1966), the young man’s
candid gaze and gestures convey his own investment in the attention and interest
Arbus brought to their encounter. If going to shoot new subjects was, as Arbus
suggested, like “a blind date,” we feel that it involved risk and excitement for
both her and her sitter.

Writing about Art
Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be
to define and evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your
intellect and perception, arouse interest and convey meaning. In most cases, then, you
will be translating the visual (what you see, or observe) into language (what you write).
In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—your observations.
This means that your description will incorporate a large portion of your essay. Remember
to be attentive to the vocabulary of the discipline of Art. I f you do not know what a word means, better not to use it.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the artwork you have chosen.
Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to make that
point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of
essays in the Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an
organized format and structure, clear and coherent paragraphs, and a command of
grammar and style.
Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you
will be asked to write a paper in which you make a comparison and contrast between two
works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that
you do not divide the paper into two discrete sections: a discussion of one work of art
followed by a discussion of the other. Instead, each paragraph can include discussion of
both works in relation to a particular element or a well thought-out combination of

You will choose a landscape artwork from Eastern culture—either Japanese or Chinese—and one Western landscape by a European or American artist. You will then compare and contrast these two paintings created during the same time period but from different cultures, drawing on course vocabulary, contextual analysis, and formal analysis.

The Eastern (Asian) landscape tradition is markedly different from that of the Western (European). Traditional Asian artists intended to evoke meditative contemplation through visual imagery using atmospheric perspective, placement, and asymmetry. Eastern works also stress a reverence for nature and often include calligraphy or poetry as part of the primary subject. What ideas do European landscapes of the same time period convey?
For this assignment, you will choose one example each of paintings that represent the Eastern and Western landscape tradition from the same time period. In your essay, compare and contrast each work's individual similarities and differences and identify major contrasts in these two cultural approaches. For basic information on how to approach this comparative essay, visit the Module 5 Writing Skills page.
Step 1: Research
First, conduct basic research on Eastern and Western landscape paintings and create a list that includes the major ways in which they are similar and different.
Then, using the

sources or comparable sites, browse examples of both Eastern and Western landscape art and choose two examples that allow you to write a fully-developed essay based on three or more major points of comparison.
Consider the following questions as you brainstorm your comparisons:
What did each artist hope to accomplish with his or her work?

Did the artists demonstrate personal connections with their landscapes, or were they conveying broader cultural messages?
Do the artworks represent attitudes towards nature that continue on today?
Explain each consideration in detail and refer directly to how they are demonstrated in the art itself.

Be sure to discuss how LINE, SHAPE, LIGHT, SPACE, MASS, VOLUME, TEXTURE and COLOR are used in the paintings. If any other concepts from the lectures are noticeable, please include them. Sometimes, an artist concentrates on some elements. Sometimes, they don't use one of the elements in order to concentrate on others. If you feel this is the case, explain why. There are a couple of interesting features in the design layout and composition of this painting. Can you spot them? There are also a few elements repeated in different places.
Also, consider the elements that we studied last week - Line, Shape and Light. How does Rossetti use these elements?
Do a quick search using google on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Did Rossetti have any involvement with this group and if he did what was the relationship? Find one short interesting fact about Rossetti or the Pre-Raphaelites. (Don't forget to provide a web link to your source.) Post either a link or the image of another painting by Rossetti.

Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be
to define and evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your
intellect and perception, arouse interest and convey meaning. In most cases, then, you
will be translating the visual (what you see, or observe) into language (what you write).
In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—your observations.
This means that your description will incorporate a large portion of your essay. Remember
to be attentive to the vocabulary of the discipline of Art. I f you do not know what a word means, better not to use it.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the artwork you have chosen.
Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to make that
point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of
essays in the Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an
organized format and structure, clear and coherent paragraphs, and a command of
grammar and style.
Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you
will be asked to write a paper in which you make a comparison and contrast between two
works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that
you do not divide the paper into two discrete sections: a discussion of one work of art
followed by a discussion of the other. Instead, each paragraph can include discussion of
both works in relation to a particular element or a well thought-out combination of

The Eastern (Asian) landscape tradition is markedly different from that of the Western (European). Traditional Asian artists intended to evoke meditative contemplation through visual imagery using atmospheric perspective, placement, and asymmetry. Eastern works also stress a reverence for nature and often include calligraphy or poetry as part of the primary subject. What ideas do European landscapes of the same time period convey?
For this assignment, you will choose one example each of paintings that represent the Eastern and Western landscape tradition from the same time period. In your essay, compare and contrast each work's individual similarities and differences and identify major contrasts in these two cultural approaches. First, conduct basic research on Eastern and Western landscape paintings and create a list that includes the major ways in which they are similar and different.

Sometimes, an artist concentrates on some elements. Sometimes, they don't use one of the elements in order to concentrate on others. If you feel this is the case, explain why. There are a couple of interesting features in the design layout and composition of this painting. Can you spot them? There are also a few elements repeated in different places.
Also, consider the elements that we studied last week - Line, Shape and Light. How does Rossetti use these elements?
Do a quick search using google on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Did Rossetti have any involvement with this group and if he did what was the relationship? What's a Feminist Critique?

This school of theory considers how aspects of our culture are inherently patriarchal (male dominated).
