CATALIN AND THE DEN SUMMER INSTITUTE
Catalin Ciupala, our sweepstakes winner, enjoyed his time in
Montana with other DEN members across North America at the DEN
Summer Institute. He felt the event was a very good opportunity to
meet teachers from the U.S., to understand how the U.S. educational
system works, and how teachers are meeting the needs of 21st
century learners. He made a lot of friends with whom he hopes to
connect with for future projects between his school and their school. Catalin Ciupala and Lance Rougeux, Discovery
Education Vice-President
The trip was beneficial for him because he was able to practice his
English, meet friendly people, and find opportunities to make bridges between schools in Romania and the
United States. He especially noticed the importance of the DEN Community. Catalin has spoken with some
of his colleagues about the experience already, but will do more when school resumes on September 17th.

We’d love to increase the communication and conversation among DEN
members in the U.S. and Romania. A great way to do that is to join our

Edmodo group. Within this educational community, you’ll have the
opportunity to connect with other educators to share knowledge and learn
from one another. We will also be focusing on one topic each month and
will have discussions together on this topic to help each other become
more successful educators.
If you participate in the Edmodo group, we will provide you with a FREE
PhotoPeach Premium upgrade. PhotoPeach is a great online tool that
allows you to create slideshows that include music, captions and facebook.com/discoveryed
comments. Here is a tutorial and a sample project. Simply create your
account and join the discussions. We will take care of the rest.
To join the group, log in to www.edmodo.com and create an account.
Then, on the left side of the screen, find the Groups section. Click on Join

3. TIPS FROM THE DEN TEAM
In each newsletter, we’d like to share some of our favorite free sites and resources with you.
Dean Shareski- www.bighugelabs.com Dean loves this site because
it’s great for creating a variety of image related projects. Upload
your own and grab your Facebook or flickr photos. You can create
magazine covers, motivational posters, or trading cards.
Steve Dembo - EduTecher - The website’s mission is to help
educators and schools around the world effectively integrate
technology and web tools into the classroom. eduTecher currently
provides links to thousands of web tools and provides concise
information on how these tools may be useful in the classroom
setting.
Chad Lehman- Gooru - This new education search engine for
learning helps teachers find standards aligned content and study
guides. 5th-12th grade math and science topics are covered and
include resources like digital textbooks, animations and instructor
videos.
Jannita Demian- LiveBinders - If you’re looking for an easy way to
collective, organize, and share resources, LiveBinders is a great
choice. A great example of a LiveBinder with high school math
resources can be found here.

4. “SCOALA DISCOVERY” IS BACK
At the beginning of the new school year, Scoala Discovery is back
with more hours available on air and, for the first time, online.
Launched at the beginning of 2012, Scoala Discovery is a project
developed in partnership between Discovery Education, MECTS and
Discovery Romania, designed to support scientific education in
Romania and to encourage teachers and students to use new media
resources in the classroom and to learn through Discovery Channel
at home.
The new season of Scoala Discovery brings over 20 new hours of educational shows which will be
aired every day at 3 PM on Discovery Channel starting September 17, covering science subjects from
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology to other sciences, such as Geology or Genetics.
Moreover, based on the feedback received from Romanian teachers, selected programs will also
be available for online viewing at scoala.discovery.ro. The first 10 hours will be available starting on
September 17 and will cover subjects from the chemistry, biology and physics disciplines.
“Ever since its launch, we wanted Scoala Discovery to be a resource available to as many people as possible and the fact
that Discovery Channel is broadcast in almost every home in Romania made that possible. Now we are taking one step
further and making this educational video content available online as well, so that teachers and students can use it any
time they want. Moreover, we are adding new programs in our educational grid to make kids enthusiastic about math,
physics or chemistry,” said Ada Roseti, Channel Director SEE, Discovery Networks CEEMEA.
