More family time
A challenge

Electrical fun facts
Electricity travels at the speed of light, more than

300,000km per second
A spark of static electricity can measure up to 3,0o0
volts
A bolt of lightning can measure up to 3 million volts
and it lasts less than one second!
AMAZING ELECTRONIC FACT: If you scuffed your
feet long enough without touching anything, you
would build up so many electrons that your finger
would explode! But this is nothing to worry about,
unless you have carpeting.
Lighting
Low cost improvements
Retrofit incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent

lamps (CFLs) as they use less electricity for the same
lighting output.
Remove excess fluorescent lights and install
reflectors.
Retrofit incandescent or fluorescent exit signs with
long-lasting, low-energy LED exit signs.
Remember that dark walls mean that you require
more power to produce the same amount of light.
Buy fixtures that have a dimmer which allow you to
manually adjust the intensity of the light in a room.
Lighting
Good investments
Install motion detectors to control lighting in

frequently unoccupied areas such as restrooms and
copy rooms.
Rewire restroom fans to operate with the lights.
Install energy management system (EMS) technology
to control lighting systems automatically.
Heating, ventilation and air
conditioning
Low cost improvements
Install time clocks or setback-programmable

thermostats to maximise efficiency.
Install locking covers on your thermostats to prevent
tampering with the temperature settings.
Perform regular maintenance on units including
checking ducts and pipe insulation for damage.
Clean condenser coils and replace filters regularly.
Heating, ventilation and air
conditioning
Good investments
Replace old heating, ventilation or air conditioning

systems with new, energy-efficient systems.
Install blinds or solar screen shades to cool the office.
Install reflective window film or awnings on all south
west facing windows.
Install ceiling and wall insulation.
Insulate water heaters and supply pipes.
Tariff’s
Tariff 11 Residential
This tariff is for general residential usage. It provides a

continuous supply of electricity day and night for all light and
power used in residential homes, flats and units. This tariff
cannot be used in conjunction with Tariff 12 Residential Time of
Use.
Tariff 12 Residential Time of Use
This tariff is also for general residential usage. It may be suitable
for customers who use most of their electricity during off-peak
times. Electricity is charged at a higher rate during the specified
peak period and less during the specified off-peak and shoulder
periods. Please check with Ergon Energy to see if it is suitable
for your household before changing. This tariff cannot be used
in conjunction with Tariff 11 Residential. It can be accessed by a
small business customer providing it is in conjunction with a
primary business tariff.
Tariff’s
Tariff 31 Night Rate (Super Economy)
This is the cheapest tariff available for applicable electric

hot water systems and other applicable connected
equipment. This is because Ergon Energy supplies
electricity when demand on the electricity network is low.
Electricity is made available for a minimum of eight hours
per day during time periods set at the discretion of Ergon
Energy but usually between the hours of 10pm and 7am.
This tariff is recommended for electric hot water systems
that only need to reheat at night to meet your household
needs throughout the day. The recommended minimum
size of an electric hot water system on this tariff is 250
litres.
Tariff’s
Tariff 33 Controlled Supply (Economy)
This tariff is available at a reduced rate for applicable

hot water systems (including solar, electric and heat
pump) and other applicable permanently connected
equipment. Swimming pool filters used only for the
purposes of filtration and associated sanitation in
residential premises may be connected by a socketoutlet. Electricity is made available for a minimum of
18 hours per day during time periods set at the
discretion of Ergon Energy. This tariff is
recommended for electric hot water systems and
other appliances that do not require electricity all day.
