Social work grew out of
humanitarian and
democratic ideals, and its
values are based on
respect for the equality,
worth, and dignity of all
people. Social work
profession addresses the
barriers, inequities and
injustices that exist in
society. Its mission is to
help people to develop
their full potential, enrich
their lives, and prevent
dysfunction.
Social workers attempt to
relieve and prevent
hardship and suffering.
They have a responsibility
to help individuals, families,
groups and communities
through the provision and
operation of appropriate
services and by contributing
to social planning. They
work with, on behalf of, or
in the interests of people to
enable them to deal with
personal and social
difficulties and obtain
essential resources and
services.
3. Different roles of social
workers
The role of Social worker in India in assessing and protecting peoples need has
been changed over the last 40 years. Basically, a social worker deals with an
ideology – “Helping people to help themselves”.

4. ADVOCATE
In the advocate role, the
social worker fights for the
rights of those
disempowered by society
with the goal of empowering
the client. The social worker
speaks on behalf of clients
when others will not listen or
when clients are unable to
do so.

In the role of counselor, the social
worker helps clients express their
needs, clarify their problems, explore
resolution strategies, and applies
intervention strategies to develop and
expand the capacities of clients to
deal with their problems more
effectively. A key function of this role
is to empower people by affirming
their personal strengths and their
capacities to deal with their problems
more effectively.

7. MEDIATOR
In the mediator role, the
social worker intervenes in
disputes between parties to
help them find compromises,
reconcile differences, and
reach mutually satisfying
agreements. The mediator
takes a neutral stance

Anna Hazare
• Twenty years ago, Malegaon Siddhi
was a barren village in Maharashtra
but now it enough(1200 aces) fertile
farmland due to his revolution.
• He always tried to remove hundreds
of corrupt functionaries as well as
began campaign in Maharashtra in
1997 for a “right to information” law.
• Hazare announced that he would
begin another public hunger strike of
indefinite length if there would be
desired corrections in Jan Lokpal Bill
(or Citizen’s Ombudsman Bill).
Irom Chanu Sharmila
• Also known as the "Iron
Lady"[ or "Mengoubi" ("the
fair one") is a civil rights
activist, political activist, and
poet from the Indian state of
Manipur.
• She is known for hunger
strike against Armed Force
(Special Power) Act.

In the researcher role, a social
worker evaluates practice
interventions and with others
evaluates program outcomes. The
researcher critically analyzes the
literature on relevant topics of
interest and uses this information
to inform practice. A researcher
extends and disseminates
knowledge, and seeks to enhance
the effectiveness of social work
practice.

organic wigs to women fighting

11. EDUCATOR
In the Educator role, social
workers are involved in

particular skills such as
budgeting, the caring
discipline of children, effective
communication, the meaning
of a medical diagnosis, and
the prevention of violence.

12. Social worker as an Educator
Mahashweta Devi
She was an Indian Bengali fiction
writer and social activist. She worked
for the rights and empowerment of
the tribal people (Lodha and Shabar)
of West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya
Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states
of India. She was honored with
various literary awards such as
the Sahitya Akademi Award (in
Bengali), JnanpithAward and Ramon
Magsaysay Award along with India's
civilian awards Padma Shri and Padma
Vibhushan.

• Born on 12 July 1997, Mingora,
Pakistan .
• Got a Noble Prize 2014 "for the
struggle against the suppression of
children and young people and for
the right of all children to education“.
13. CASE MANAGER
In the role of a Case manager, the
social worker locates services and
assists their clients to access those
services. Case management is
especially important for complex
situations and for those who are
homeless or elderly, have chronic
physical or mental health issues, are
disabled, victims of domestic or other
violent crimes, or are vulnerable
children.

An artist at just 16, Anjali works and
raises funds for natural calamity,
child abuse, and rehabilitation for
underprivileged children through her
artistic creations. In 2008, at an
International Diabetes Charity, she

money to provide insulin to many
poverty stricken diabetic children.Indian social reformer who
campaigned against Child Labor in
India and elsewhere advocated the
universal right to education. In 2014
he was the co recipient of the Noble
Peace Prize, along with teenage

15. COMMUNITY CHANGE AGENT
As a community change agent, the social
worker participates as part of a group or
organization seeking to improve or
restructure some aspect of community
service provision. A change agent, working
with others, uses a problem-solving model
to identify the problem, solicit community
input, and plan for change. A community
change agent acts in a coordinated manner
to achieve planned change at multiple levels
that helps to shift the focus of institutional
resources to meet identified goals.

Dabholkar
He was an Indian rationalist and author
from Maharashtra, India. In 1989 he
founded and became president of
the Maharashtra Andhashraddha
Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS), (the Committee
to Eradicate superstition in Maharashtra).
Triggered by his murder on 20 August
2013, the pending Anti- Superstition
and Anti-Superstition and Black Magic
Ordinance was promulgated in the state of
Maharashtra, four days later. The next
year, in 2014, he was posthumously
awarded the Padma Shri for social work.
Bindeshwar Pathak
He is an Indian Sociologist. He is the
founder of Sulabh International, an
India-based social service
organization which works to promote
human rights, environmental
sanitation, non-conventional sources
of energy, waste management and
social reforms through education. His
work is considered pioneering in
social reform, especially in the field
of sanitation and hygiene. He
received various national and
international awards for his work
with this organization.
17. FACILITATOR
In this role, social workers are
involved in gathering groups of
people together for a variety of
purposes including community
development, self advocacy,
political organization, and policy
change. Social workers are
involved as group therapists and
task group leaders.

Setalvad Avani Singh
This 17-year-old entrepreneur
founded an organization named
Ummeed. The organization trains
women from slum area to be
independent as a rickshaw and
taxi driver.
She is known as human rights activists
and journalists. After Bombay riots,
she started a magazine named as
‘Communalism Combat’ which was
set to target religious intolerance and
communal violence. Teesta also runs
a Mumbai-based NGO under the
banner of “Citizens for Justice &
Peace (CJP)”.
19. BROKER
In the role of a broker, a social worker
is responsible for identifying, locating,
and linking clients to needed resources
in a timely manner. Once the client’s
needs are assessed and potential
services identified, the broker assists
the client in choosing the most
appropriate service option and assists
in negotiating the terms of service
delivery. In this role the social worker is
also concerned with the quality,
quantity, and accessibility of services.
