Roy Lorieo designed a new 2260 sq ft invertebrates gallery called the Bug Gallery for the Royal Alberta Museum. The gallery features 39 live animal terrariums and aquariums grouped into sections based on where invertebrates can be found in the world. A central gathering space called the "Hive" features overlapping organic forms and internal lighting. Terrariums are designed to give clear views of habitats and group specimens based on traits. Lighting is used to illuminate animals from within exhibitry. The gallery is scheduled to open in Fall 2017 after a 12 month design and 6 month fabrication/installation period.

Feasibility of Using RATE with Teacher Candidates
This study examined the feasibility of using the Rapid Assessment of Teacher Effectiveness (RATE) observation instrument with pre-service teachers. 38 faculty members at East Carolina University received training to use RATE and then scored videos of 179 teacher candidates' lessons. The study found that while inter-rater reliability was higher than previous RATE validation studies, discrepancies still existed between paired raters' scores. Using two raters to score each video seemed prohibitive for a large teacher preparation program. However, maintaining reliability and validity may require two raters. The study aims to further pilot RATE with live observations and examine its predictive validity.

Capturing the visual in collections metadata / Victoria Webb (Wellcome Collec...
The collections at Wellcome Collection are strong in visual culture, with over 250,000 prints, paintings, drawings, photographs, and objects. The collection also has a large ephemera collection, plus a considerable amount of visual material among the archives collection. The collections are currently catalogued in management systems for either the library or archives, and until recently there was no consistent approach to metadata creation. We have developed a Metadata Framework to provide a foundation for the cataloguing of our visual collections, to ensure consistency in the data, regardless of the system they are catalogued in. This will support our work now and will future proof the data should it move to a new library, archive, or museum system.
The Framework uses the approach of existing standards: CCO (Cataloguing Cultural Objects) from the VRA, mapping the ideas to the needs of Wellcome’s collections, and the requirements of Spectrum – ensuring our collections data is compliant for UK Museum Accreditation. Elements CDWA and DCRM(G) of were also incorporated. From this framework we are developing system specific cataloguing guidelines, suitable for different formats (currently MARC and ISADG). The paper will look at the creation of the Framework and the issues encountered, discussing consistency for new metadata, dealing with legacy data, the need for transparency when amending existing records, and incorporating evolving approaches to diversity and inclusion. Using examples from the collection to illustrate how it is helping us to showcase new acquisitions and re-discover our historical collections.

I hope this presentation will spark further conversation; I would value discussions with others working with similar items and issues in their collections.

Georgina Goodlander is the manager of the Luce Foundation Center, a visible storage facility at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Center displays around 3,300 artworks and is used to test experimental projects. An audio tour was recently launched to provide information to visitors standing in front of objects. In the past, the museum implemented an Alternate Reality Game called "Ghosts of a Chance" to attract gamers and promote the museum, which engaged over 200 players in scavenger hunts and exploring the collection. Future games are planned in partnership with other institutions and RIT to improve accessibility and engagement with the collections.

HMNS Added Modern Illumination to its Ancient Egypt Hall
An accomplished museum executive with more than three decades of experience in the field, Joel A. Bartsch began his career at the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, where he served as a curatorial assistant and assistant to the director. In 2004, Joel A. Bartsch became the president and CEO of the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS).
The Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Hall of Ancient Egypt reopened on November 20, 2021. Most of the frequent visitors were surprised by the new lighting design and technology integrated into the 12,500-square-foot space before the reopening. While the museum has familiarized visitors with historical Egyptian religion, fashion, mummification, and burial, the new lights add an aesthetic quality to the space.
One of the most noticeable additions was the elektraLite Stingray Mini 20-watt LED fixtures, roughly 350. Built with innovative technologies, these lights are particularly perfect for the open-top artifacts-containing glass cases since their color temperature can be adjusted. The visual characteristics of some artifacts were only optimum in a certain color range that can be accomplished with the Stingray Mini LED fixtures.
The lights can also be positioned at various angles within each case and at various distances, which ensures that a sufficient distance in terms of candlesticks is met when illuminating certain light-sensitive artifacts. It’s no wonder that many of these objects are sensitive to light since many are over 3,000 years old.
Another feature of the Mini LED fixtures is that they can be adjusted via an iPad web app. With directions from curators, lighting designers can adjust the illumination precisely.

Presented at the Museums Australia 2012 National Conference in Adelaide. This presentation cites some international examples of when 'showing rather than telling' gets a message across effectively, and how museums might apply these principles in line with the National Standards for Australian Museums and Galleries. The Standards is the definitive best-practice guidance for museums.
