National Programme for Information Technology (NPfIT)
NHS Record Service, intended to deliver an electronic health
records system containing patient records across the UK.

• Health records of UK citizens held locally
• Adaptation of electronic health records tended to be slow
• Implementation vary from home grown to government
driven standardized commercial software

6. CASE STUDY #2 – Scope & Estimates
• To create a national EHR system for the entire UK
• To connect 30,000 doctors to 300 hospitals
• "the world's biggest civil information technology
programme”

9. CASE STUDY #2 – Post Mortem
• UK lost GBP 12,7 billion trying to complete the project
• Later discovered, the project continues to cost the country millions, with
contracts in some cases not set to expire for 12 more years
