Rip Van Winkle was a lazy man who lived in a village in the Catskill Mountains. He enjoyed avoiding work by wandering into the forest with his dog Wolf. One day while in the forest, Rip met a short, old man carrying a barrel who led him to a group of strange men playing ninepins. Rip was given drinks from the barrel which made him fall into a deep sleep. Upon waking, Rip discovered it was 20 years later based on his long white beard, and he returned home to a village where no one recognized him.
