Boeing Rolling Out Accelerated Assembly Automation At 737 Factory.
Reuters (6/17) reported that Boeing is debuting the Spar Assembly Line (SAL) at its 737 manufacturing plant in Renlon, Washington, “adding a new robotic system to drill holes in the main beams inside each wing known as spars, industry sources said.” According to the article, the roll out of the new systems bolsters Boeing’s headway into automation “as it prepares to boost output of its best-selling airliner, while also preparing the ground work for future aircraft that will be designed with radical new manufacturing methods in mind.” The aircraft manufacturer “says greater automation will cut the amount of ‘rework’ caused by production glitches, reduce injuries and support sharp increases in output at factories.”

Reuters (7/7) reports that Boeing has ramped up its efforts to “conserve cash, cut costs in its supply chain and trim inventory of parts in its factories,” informing suppliers that it will take up to 120 days to pay for its expenses, “rather than 30 days as in the past.” According to sources close to the matter, Boeing is introducing the new payment scheme this year. In addition, the source said that the company is also decreasing its overall factory inventory and is relying on suppliers to store parts and equipment. Confirming the reported changes in a statement to Reuters, Boeing spokeswoman Jessica Kowal said that in order to stay competitive, “we are in the process of adjusting the payment terms of our large suppliers,” adding that “our new payment terms are in line with their payment schedules to their own suppliers.”

SEATTLE -- Boeing Co. (BA) said Primaris Airlines Inc. ordered 40 planes worth about $3.8
billion at list price.
The companies expect negotiations to close at the end of this year.
In a press release Thursday, the airplane manufacturer said Primaris ordered 20 type 737-
800 planes and 20 type 7E7-8 planes.
Primaris, a discount commercial airline targeting business customers, has an option for 25
additional 737-800s and 15 additional 7E7-8s.
The privately held company did not say where it got financing for the orders.
Deliveries of the 737-800s will being in 2007; Boeing will deliver the 7E7-8s in 2010.
The Wall Street Journal, which reported the deal Thursday, said upstart carrier Primaris
aims to offer all-business-class service between New York and other major U.S. cities.
Primaris, which has gotten approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration and
Department of Transportation, expects to begin flying domestic routes in 2005.
Boeing shares were recently up 4 cents, at $49, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Primaris Airlines, an upstart carrier that aims to offer all-business-class service between New
York and other major U.S. cities as early as May, announced today that it has raised enough
money to order 40 new airplanes from Boeing Co. and that it will become the first U.S. airline to
operate Boeing's new 7E7 Dreamliner.
The Las Vegas carrier will place firm orders for 20 new Boeing 737-800 jetliners and 20 7E7s. It
also has secured options for 25 more 737s and 15 more 7E7s. The total value of the firm orders
is about $3.8 billion at list prices. Deliveries would begin in 2007, and would replace leased
jetliners that the airline plans to use in the interim.
Primaris now operates a single leased Boeing 757 that most recently was used to ferry the
White House press corps. The airline says it believes it has lined up financial backing that will
enable it to start a premium service that would do for business travel what Southwest Airlines
and JetBlue Airways have done for economy travel, at a time when the full-service carriers have
been cutting back on the perks. "We feel very confident that there is a market out there for what
we are offering," said Mark Morris, chief executive of Primaris.
