RFID has applications beyond just tags that exchange data with readers. Middleware is needed to filter data from tags and translate it into a format usable by software applications. Current manufacturing applications of RFID are mainly driven by external mandates for tracking goods, but RFID has potential for more in-house uses like mistake-proofing assembly and integrating with kanban systems. For many applications currently, the costs of RFID have not outweighed the low costs of barcodes, but RFID is improving.
