Paul Van Doren has extensive community service and volunteer experience including interning with the West Hartford Public Library collecting oral histories and creating an archive. He has volunteered with several organizations assisting those in need by delivering furniture, preparing meals, and more. Paul also has experience working with children as a junior group leader at an afterschool program and participates in various sports and honor societies.

Library Kickoff Celebration
On May 23rd, a kickoff celebration was held to support the new library. Many people attended including Mayor Dan Williams and County Commissioner David Seibert who gave speeches. The architect Jeff Tosh and former state representative Tommy Carter also spoke in support of the new building. Several generous donations were made to the Library Foundation. The Friends of the Library presented a check for $2,260 from proceeds of the May 16th Garden Tour. While there is still a long way to go, the library has many friends and supporters to help build the new facility.

We are dealing with slashed budgets and insufficient staffing while attempting to meet an increased need for innovative library programming. As librarians from small libraries, we may be reluctant to shake things up with new ideas because of the high price of failure. So how do we stay relevant in the 21st century? This presentation is a how-to guide for utilizing local resources, establishing valuable community partnerships, and decreasing costs while increasing participation in fresh, fearless, and affordable library programming.

Caroline Parr has over 30 years of experience working in youth services in public libraries. She is currently the Coordinator of Youth Services for the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, where she oversees programming and services for children and teens. Prior to this role, she worked as Coordinator of Children's Services and Head of the Children's Room for other libraries. Parr has also served on award committees for the Newbery, Sibert, and Caldecott Awards and was president of the Virginia Library Association. She has an MLS from Simmons College and a BA from Tufts University.
Baldwin library & digital foundations
The Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature is the second largest children's literature collection in the US, with over 120,000 books, manuscripts, and artifacts. It began as a private collection donated to the University of Florida in the late 1970s. The Baldwin Library has digitized over 5,800 public domain titles, which are available through the University of Florida Digital Collections and the International Children's Digital Library. The Baldwin Library is the largest single contributor to the International Children's Digital Library in order to increase global access to and discovery of its historical children's literature holdings. The Baldwin Library aims to continue strengthening its collaborative relationship with the International Children's Digital Library.

The Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education was created based on two Maine couples donating their historic map collections to the University of Southern Maine. Eleanor and Sam Smith originally donated their collection, inspiring Harold and Peggy Osher to donate theirs as well. Together these collections formed the core of what is now a nearly 19,000 square foot library. The Smith's children have seen the collection evolve into a world-class resource open to all, with programs to preserve and educate about the maps. It includes storage, reference functions, imaging lab, and educational center. Support ensures the Smith's legacy of sharing knowledge through the collection will continue.

The Environmental Education Center in Makrinitsa, Greece was founded in 1999 to provide educational programs about the local environment. It is housed in a historic stone mansion and led by a director and four education officers. The Center offers programs for local schools, adult education meetings and seminars, participates in environmental networks, and publishes educational materials. Since opening, it has educated over 71,000 students and 11,000 educators about topics like local herbs, water resources, and sustainable tourism in the Pelion region.

The Friends of the James E. Shepard Memorial Library held several events, including a Declaration Signing Ceremony on April 13, 2014 where guests affirmed the importance of libraries. There was also a panel discussion on February 5, 2012 titled "Looking Back, While Moving Forward" about the Durham Woolworth's lunch counter sit-ins. Another event on June 12, 2011 included guest speakers and a tour of a photographic exhibit and the Woolworth's lunch counter. The Friends group brings community members together through educational programs that celebrate the history and role of libraries.
