Daniel Rivera is an undergraduate student at Florida International University studying biomedical engineering with a 3.38 GPA. He works in the Neuronal Mass Dynamics Lab performing acute brain surgery on rats and analyzing neuronal data using MATLAB and microscopy. His research interests involve neuroscience and neurodegenerative brain disorders. He has experience performing craniotomies and analyzing neurophysiological data using MATLAB.

Profile
Committed undergraduate student researcher at Florida International University currently working in the
Neuronal Mass Dynamics Lab analyzing and obtaining data through performing acute brain surgery and the use of
MATLAB and Microscopy to analyze neuronal data.
Education
2014-Present Florida International University Miami, FL
Bachelor of Science Biomedical Engineering
GPA: 3.38
Research Interests
My interests surround the field of Neuroscience in Biomedical Engineering. I wish to pursue a concentration in
neurodegenerative brain disorders.
Skills
• Performing craniotomies, burr holes, and overall acute brain surgery on rats to study neuronal activity.
• Analysis of neurophysiological data using MATLAB and other software.
• Presenting at National and In-State Conferences
• Intracranial Recordings
• Currently getting trained in EEG recordings.
Work Experience
• Research in Dr. Jorge Riera’s Lab (FIU)
o Involves the study of Cortical Spreading Depression, a
neurological event that creates a slowly propagating wave of
neuronal and glial depolarization leading to an inhibition of
neuronal activity.
• Research Research in Dr. John Kominoski’s Lab (FIU)
o Involves the study of Carbon flux due to the rising sea levels and
how this affects the flora and fauna of surrounding ecosystems.
2016-Present
2015-2016
Community Service
• Volunteer in a Center for Abused Children 2012-2014
• Tutor children with disadvantaged backgrounds. Mostly kids that 2014-2016
just came from other countries and do not know how to speak English.
Extracurricular Activities
• Member of clubs including: QBIC (Quantifying Biology in the Classroom), BMES (Biomedical Engineering
Society), and to the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.
• Occasionally play intramural sports.
• Give STEM and research talks in my previous High School, Weslyan Academy in Guaynabo, PR.
