RESTFUL
BEHAVIOR
LIFE CAN BEvery chaotic and for many it seems
that’s how it is all the time. Pressure
from work, family, friends, you
n a m e i t , i t b u i l d s u p .
IN ORDER TOachieve a blessed state of REST
there is a need for certain
behavior. The following is a quick
lesson from Hebrews chapter 4
that gives insight and provides key
components for you to have a
RESTFUL LIFE.
FIRST, WHAT
IS REST?
REST
1 repose, sleep
2 a) freedom from activity or
labor
b) a state of motionlessness or
inactivity
c) the repose of death
3 a place for resting or lodging
4 peace of mind or spirit
as defined on MERRIAM-WEBSTERS.COM is…
PEACE OFMIND OR SPIRIT is the REST that
we’re going to focus on. Many
people hop into bed at an
appropriate hour to be well RESTED
for the next day. Yet the RESTLESS
thoughts and various anxieties that
surround them do not permit them
a good night of sound REST.
TRUE RESTonly takes place when we can
achieve PEACE in our spirit and in
our mind.
HEBREWS 41 God’s promise of entering his
REST still stands, so we ought to
tremble with fear that some of you
might fail to experience it. 2 For this
good news—that GOD HAS
PREPARED THIS REST—has been
announced to us just as it was to
them. But it did them no good
because they didn’t share the
faith of those who listened to God.
1RECEIVE God’s Word
Make room for the good news that
He has prepared REST for YOU. This
REST is for YOU, now and for all
time. His immense love for YOU is
the power that has made it
available. YOU may say otherwise.
But God is ALL-WISE. He knows
better. YOU should as well.
HEBREWS 43 For ONLY WE WHO BELIEVE can
enter his REST. As for the others,
God said,
“In my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place
of REST,’”
even though this REST has been
ready since he made the world.
2BELIEVE God’s Word
ONLY THOSE WHO BELIEVE can
enter His REST. STEP 1 in believing
His Word is confessing Jesus Christ
as YOUR savior. STEP 2 is actively
believing God’s Word in EVERY
AREA of YOUR life. Not just where
it’s convenient. YOU may ask
“where is His REST?” His rebuttal is
w h e r e i s y o u r F A I T H ?
HEBREWS 44 We know it is ready because of
the place in the Scriptures where it
mentions the seventh day: “On the
seventh day God RESTED from all
his work.” 5 But in the other
passage God said, “They will never
enter my place of REST.”
6 So God’s REST is there for people
to enter, but those who first heard
this good news failed to enter
because they DISOBEYED GOD.
3OBEY God’s Word
God’s place of REST is established
but many do not enter because of
disobedience to God. Being
obstinate to God assures REST will
not be achieved. How much
longer will YOU run in the wrong
direction? Turn now & run into the
a r m s o f t h e F a t h e r w h o
h a s p r o m i s e d R E S T .
HEBREWS 412 For the word of God is alive and
powerful. It is sharper than the
sharpest two-edged sword, cutting
between soul and spirit, between
joint and marrow. It exposes our
innermost thoughts and desires.
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden
from God. Everything is naked and
exposed before his eyes, and he is
the one to whom we are
ACCOUNTABLE.
4Be ACCOUNTABLE to God
God knows the content of YOUR
heart. He absolutely knows YOUR
thoughts toward Him. Is God a
forethought in your life or is He an
afterthought? God wants to be
YOUR #1. If He is not 1st in YOUR life,
all YOUR other relationships will be
o u t o f o r d e r .
HEBREWS 414 So then, since we have a great
High Priest who has entered
heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let
us hold firmly to what we believe
15 This High Priest of ours
UNDERSTANDS our weaknesses, for
he faced all of the same testings
we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let
us come boldly to the throne of
our gracious God. There we will
receive his mercy, and we will find
grace to help us when we need it
most.
5Consider JESUS
When the pressure gets to where it
feels like it’s more than I can take, I
think of Jesus. I think of His sacrifice.
His forehead pierced by the crown
of thorns. His back striped by the
scourging whip. His hands and feet
nailed to the cross. He did it for
me. He suffered for me. And in His
last moment He uttered a powerful
m e s s a g e , “ I t i s F I N I S H E D . ”
THE CROSSis the place where Jesus paid it
ALL. Jesus made a way of entry
into the place of God’s REST.
YOU are at liberty to choose REST.
My prayer is that YOU do not fail to
experience it, for IT IS WONDERFUL!
MATTHEW 11…says in verse 28 –
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all
of you who are weary and carry
heavy burdens, and I WILL GIVE
YOU REST.”
