Over the last few years, a number of new graph databases came to market. As we start the next decade, dare we say “the semantic twenties,” we also see vendors that never before mentioned graphs starting to position their products and solutions as graphs or graph-based.
Graph databases are one thing, but “Knowledge Graphs” are an even hotter topic. We are often asked to explain Knowledge Graphs.
Today, there are two main graph data models:

Ontology has its roots as a field of philosophical study that is focused on the nature of existence. However, today's ontology (aka knowledge graph) can incorporate computable descriptions that can bring insight in a wide set of compelling applications including more precise knowledge capture, semantic data integration, sophisticated query answering, and powerful association mining - thereby delivering key value for health care and the life sciences. In this webinar, I will introduce the idea of computable ontologies and describe how they can be used with automated reasoners to perform classification, to reveal inconsistencies, and to precisely answer questions. Participants will learn about the tools of the trade to design, find, and reuse ontologies. Finally, I will discuss applications of ontologies in the fields of diagnosis and drug discovery.
Bio:
Dr. Michel Dumontier is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Biomedical Informatics) at Stanford University. His research focuses on the development of methods to integrate, mine, and make sense of large, complex, and heterogeneous biological and biomedical data. His current research interests include (1) using genetic, proteomic, and phenotypic data to find new uses for existing drugs, (2) elucidating the mechanism of single and multi-drug side effects, and (3) finding and optimizing combination drug therapies. Dr. Dumontier is the Stanford University Advisory Committee Representative for the World Wide Web Consortium, the co-Chair for the W3C Semantic Web for Health Care and the Life Sciences Interest Group, scientific advisor for the EBI-EMBL Chemistry Services Division, and the Scientific Director for Bio2RDF, an open source project to create Linked Data for the Life Sciences. Ontologies
Ontology has its roots as a field of philosophical study that is focused on the nature of existence. However, today's ontology (aka knowledge graph) can incorporate computable descriptions that can bring insight in a wide set of compelling applications including more precise knowledge capture, semantic data integration, sophisticated query answering, and powerful association mining - thereby delivering key value for health care and the life sciences. In this webinar, I will introduce the idea of computable ontologies and describe how they can be used with automated reasoners to perform classification, to reveal inconsistencies, and to precisely answer questions. Participants will learn about the tools of the trade to design, find, and reuse ontologies. Finally, I will discuss applications of ontologies in the fields of diagnosis and drug discovery.
Bio:
Dr. Michel Dumontier is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Biomedical Informatics) at Stanford University. His research focuses on the development of methods to integrate, mine, and make sense of large, complex, and heterogeneous biological and biomedical data. His current research interests include (1) using genetic, proteomic, and phenotypic data to find new uses for existing drugs, (2) elucidating the mechanism of single and multi-drug side effects, and (3) finding and optimizing combination drug therapies. Dr. Dumontier is the Stanford University Advisory Committee Representative for the World Wide Web Consortium, the co-Chair for the W3C Semantic Web for Health Care and the Life Sciences Interest Group, scientific advisor for the EBI-EMBL Chemistry Services Division, and the Scientific Director for Bio2RDF, an open source project to create Linked Data for the Life Sciences. He is also the founder and Editor-in-Chief for a Data Science, a new IOS Press journal featuring open access, open review, and semantic publishing.

The Cooking Language is a new method to make the process of cooking more dynamic and creative. It is a tool to give cookers some new ideas when standing in a kitchen.
The method is based on the Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander.
It is a collection of "cooking words" which captures the relationships between the ingredients inside a dish, and gives the relationships a unique name. The Cooking Language is composed by a subset of languages that each focus on a certain ingredient e.g. Egg Language, Onion Language, Tofu Language, etc.. Inside each subset of language, there is a collection of cooking words that each capture an aspect of how the ingredient can be used in a dish, and how it interacts with other ingredients.
During the actual cooking process, the cooking words will become a source for ideas to add an extra ingredient. The words will also become a help to prevent or solve any problems that come up during the cooking.In addition to this, the cooking words will become a tool to understand recipes and dishes by other people.
When the Cooking Language becomes more abundant, it will ultimately replace the recipe, as a way of sharing the knowledge of cooking.

K-means Clustering

“The Semantic Web is not a separate Web but an extension of the current one, in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.” - this statement of Tim Berners-Lee has gained even more relevance since the start of this century.
The humanity is rapidly developing and persistently experiencing local and global challenges, such as global warming/climate change, dis-balances in demand and supply, among many others. Mastering most (if not all) of them require a behavior change. Behavioral change is difficult to achieve per se, and it is important that technology – as a major enabler - has a positive rather than a negative impact here.
Further, the dramatic growth of data volumes (Big Data, Internet of Things) and the data’s increased power and impact and on the people's daily lives are calling for new types, practices and policies of behavior with data.
These factors made the role of semantic technology even more crucial: in terms of providing a well-defined meaning, and eventually delivering Smart Data for a functional and fair data value chain.
Addressing the behavioural change with Smart Data, I discuss potential ICT solutions investigating the domain of energy efficient buildings. Particularly, our completed OpenFridge experiment will be presented: design and development of the Internet of Things data system with semantic and data analytics enablers for building new services on a top of typical home appliance data — in particular, refrigerators. The system has been evaluated with real life end-user pilots.
In conclusions, I overview our related ongoing work, namely, in the areas of the impact of Big Data on society and related research roadmapping (linking to sociology), personalized energy efficiency data management services in buildings (linking to psychology), and semantic data licensing (linking to law).

With its rapid growth and increasing adoption, big data is producing a growing impact in society. Its usage is opening both opportunities such as new business models and economic gains and risks such as privacy violations and discrimination. Europe is in need of a comprehensive strategy to optimise the use of data for a societal benefit and increase the innovation and competitiveness of its productive activities. In this paper, we contribute to the definition of this strategy with a research roadmap that considers the positive and negative externalities associated with big data, maps research and innovation topics in the areas of data management, processing, analytics, protection, visualisation, as well as non-technical topics, to the externalities they can tackle, and provides a time frame to address these topics.

Rapid development of Internet and Web technology is changing the state of the art in communication of knowledge, or results of research activities. Particularly, Semantic technology, linked and open data become key enablers for successful and efficient progress in research. At first, I define the research data service (RDS) and discuss typical current and possible future usage scenarios involving RDS. Further, I discuss the state of the art in the areas of semantic service and data annotation and API construction, as well as infrastructural solutions, applicable for RDS realisation. At last, innovative methods of online dissemination, promotion and efficient communication of research are discussed.

Selecting Ontologies and Publishing Data of Electrical Appliances: A Refrige...
Application scenarios for the data generated from the Internet of Things are on the rise. For example, given the appliances’ energy consumption data, energy measurement tools now make it possible to save energy whilst efficiently controlling the consumption of different household devices. Yet, when the precise structured data describing appliance models is missing, it is difficult for such application scenarios to be realized. The developed OpenFridge ontology defines a basic vocabulary for the domain of measuring a refrigerator’s energy consumption, showing that the needed ontology schemata are already in place, but need to be identified and skillfully applied. Further, the ontology has been populated from the Web using data scraping, and the created dataset semantically describing the specifics of 1032 refrigerator models with 18665 triples, make these valuable assets for the development of further applications.

Une évaluation comparable de la performance basée sur le temps d'escale des navires
L'objectif de l'ICPP est d'identifier les domaines d'amélioration qui peuvent en fin de compte bénéficier à toutes les parties concernées, des compagnies maritimes aux gouvernements nationaux en passant par les consommateurs. Il est conçu pour servir de point de référence aux principaux acteurs de l'économie mondiale, notamment les autorités et les opérateurs portuaires, les gouvernements nationaux, les organisations supranationales, les agences de développement, les divers intérêts maritimes et d'autres acteurs publics et privés du commerce, de la logistique et des services de la chaîne d'approvisionnement.
Le développement de l'ICPP repose sur le temps total passé par les porte-conteneurs dans les ports, de la manière expliquée dans les sections suivantes du rapport, et comme dans les itérations précédentes de l'ICPP. Cette quatrième itération utilise des données pour l'année civile complète 2023. Elle poursuit le changement introduit l'année dernière en n'incluant que les ports qui ont eu un minimum de 24 escales valides au cours de la période de 12 mois de l'étude. Le nombre de ports inclus dans l'ICPP 2023 est de 405.
Comme dans les éditions précédentes de l'ICPP, la production du classement fait appel à deux approches méthodologiques différentes : une approche administrative, ou technique, une méthodologie pragmatique reflétant les connaissances et le jugement des experts ; et une approche statistique, utilisant l'analyse factorielle (AF), ou plus précisément la factorisation matricielle. L'utilisation de ces deux approches vise à garantir que le classement des performances des ports à conteneurs reflète le plus fidèlement possible les performances réelles des ports, tout en étant statistiquement robuste.
