Mitochondria in plant and animal cells use glucose and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy through cellular respiration. This process takes place in mitochondria, releasing energy that is used by other organelles and proteins to keep the cell alive and functioning. Both plant and animal cells carry out cellular respiration in this way.
