This document provides resources for teaching about Canada in K-12 classrooms. It discusses how teaching Canada meets educational goals of preparing students as global citizens and good neighbors to Canada. It outlines that Canada is sometimes not adequately covered in social studies standards and curricula. It then provides an overview of the various resources available, including national resource centers, government publications, loan kits, print materials, multimedia resources, and websites. It specifically highlights the two US Department of Education-funded National Resource Centers on Canada and their initiatives and resources.

Standards of Practice for School Library Learning Commons in Canada 2014Philip Sweezey
"Our increasingly networked world presents complexities for learning unknown just a few years ago, but at the same time offers fresh opportunities. Learning in ever-changing environments demands new ways of educating – a focus on inquiry, creative and critical thinking, multiple literacies, and working together to meet shared goals and knowledge building. Evolving learning approaches and definitions of learning success are the new realities, with the consequent need for creating innovative learning environments. "

The cost of a college education continues to rise, outpacing inflation and median income growth in the last decade. As a result, students are piling on debt and recent graduates are struggling under the weight of loans they wouldn't have needed 10 to 20 years ago.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. The best practice is simply to teach Canada
As seen in the video “Tom Brokaw explains Canada to Americans”, it is
important for American students to know more about our northern neighbor and
its relationship to our own nation:
Teaching Canada meets international education goals that consider North America first, encourage
American students to be prepared as 21st
century citizens who are good neighbors, good economic
partners, good allies, and more.
Teaching Canada has students explore our international relationship beyond mutually-beneficial
economic interests to include the stewardship of N. America and the world.
Teaching Canada advances student knowledge, provides comparative context for history and politics,
and encourages global thinking.
Canada is perhaps the best comparative lens regarding all core social studies topics.
3. Canada and the
American Curriculum Project
Canada sometimes falls in an curriculum “gap” that educators aren’t aware of.

4. Resources for Teaching Canada
Key Question: Why aren’t more resources for teaching Canada available?
Canada only appears intermittently in social studies standards and, sometimes, is not
addressed at all in K-12 classrooms.*
Standards (esp. California and Texas) drive the textbook industry and,
without standards that specifically mention Canada, Canada is often
minimized and/or left out of textbooks even in key areas like economics.
NCSS continues to support increased inclusion of Canada in curricula.

6. The US DOE Title VI Program
The launching of Sputnik I in 1957 led to the federal government’s most significant
participation in modern foreign language and area studies research and training in
history—The National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958.
The federal Office of Education began administering the National Resource
Centers (NRC) Program under Title VI of the NDEA, and the U.S.D.O.E. continues
to administer it under the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended.
The centers supported under the NRC Program conduct a broad range of activities
that include instruction, outreach, scholarly research, maintenance of library
resources, and teacher training. Collectively, these activities represent a
programmatic effort that focuses on particular regions of the world and the relevant
issues connected to those regions; and, they constitute a national capacity in
modern foreign languages and area and international studies.

OISE (Ontario Institute for Secondary Education, University of Toronto) is probably the premier teacher-training and research institute in Canada for primary and secondary levels of education. US teachers can access much information regarding Canadian schools through the website it maintains. If interested in finding partner schools, for example, for pen pals, etc., this is the site to go to. You can determine the location and grade level of school that you would prefer to partner with and be given contact information for the school and possibly even tour the school, etc., through the school’s own website.
