This document provides information about SEPPRO® SA-D1, an ion exchange resin used for water treatment and organic reaction catalysis. Two environmentally safe iron compounds (synthetic magnetite and ferrous gluconate) have been evaluated as sulphide scavengers at temperature conditions of 25 °C, 35 °C, 45 °C and 55 °C at pH of 12 in a sulphide-contaminated drilling mud. The ferrous complex was found to be a better scavenger than synthetic magnetite. It exhibited 100 % scavenging efficiency within the first 40 minutes of agitation. The same concentration of the reagents, which is 700 mg/l scavenger vs. 700 mg/l sulphide, was employed (i.e. sulphide concentration to scavenger concentration ratio was 1:1). Whereas, the synthetic magnetite’s scavenging efficiency was only about 30% even after 2 hours of agitation. Addition of the ferrous complex to the drilling mud was not found to be detrimental to the rheological properties of the mud. Its inclusion brought about the stabilization of mud’s rheological properties.

Tata Steel operates chromite mines at the Sukinda Valley in Odisha producing chrome ore which is subsequently converted it to Ferro Chrome and sold to customers across the world. A large quantity of water, pumped out from the mining pit and due to rainfall, needs to be handled during the mining operations. Chrome Ore mainly contains tri-valent Chromic oxide and a very small fraction of hexavalent di-chromate. Water coming in contact with chromium ore preferentially leaches out soluble hexavalent chromium from the ore body, as a result, water from the mine contains 0.2 – 4 mg/l of hexavalent chromium against a safe limit of 0.005 mg/l for human consumption; requiring all water to be treated before its release from the mines. Thus, Tata Steel is setting up an additional state of art effluent treatment plant at Sukinda with a capacity of 108 million litres/day; one of the largest in the region; which will be completed by Sept 2015. This paper discusses how the technology for the Effluent Treatment Plant was chosen amongst various alternatives, how the capacity of the plant was decided, the challenges during construction of the said Effluent Treatment Plant that were faced, and how these were successfully tackled. The paper also describes how, because the outlet water is of a better quality than the water from the local water body, the outlet water will be used as the input to the Water Treatment Plant, aiding water consumption and lowering operating cost.

Small concentrations in air may be fatal in minutes. Hydrogen sulphide can be found as a component of formation gases, dissolved in water, hydrocarbons, or even liquid sulphur (King, 1974). Thermal degradation of organic materials and sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) can create hydrogen sulphide along with other gases. Although hydrogen sulphide can have adverse effects on viscosity, fluid loss, and fluid chemistry.

Clean in Place is a method of cleaning the interior surfaces of process equipment and fittings, without disassembling them. Industries that rely heavily on CIP are those requiring high levels of hygiene, i.e. dairy, beverage, brewing, processed foods, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics and CIP is an integral part of automated industry. CIP is concerned with the removal of soil that can cause damage to quality of the final product being processed. CIP method highly depends on type of soil or food residue to be cleaned. Every industry has their own type of soil depending upon the product being processed. And hence it is recommended to have CIP Process to be designed accordingly. Selection of chemicals and their strength, chemistry of product and its interaction with different solutions, time of interaction of chemicals with process
line etc. are to be considered while designing the CIP line. Soil also differ in nature; it can either be simple water soluble or can be water insoluble. Water soluble one’s are easy to clean as simple flush of water can dissolve them. Water insoluble soils are hard to tackle as they are again divided into organic and inorganic soils. Organic ones include fats, oils, grease, proteins, starch, and carbohydrates. Inorganic soils include minerals, salt deposits, millstones etc. CIP performs in two ways: - Single use cleaning CIP and recovery CIP. Single use cleaning is for that industries where the line gets way too dirty and chemicals once used can’t be further used due to high soil contamination in the chemical solution, but it is to be noted that they can be highly
costly as new chemicals are to be used every time and they can have high environmental load as it is disposed and drained after every CIP Cycle. In Recovery CIP the process line is not so filthy and hence the chemicals can be collected and reused, though the equipment for recovering cleaning solution is more expensive.
