Town Of Wayland Technology Crossroads - Joe SchwendtGordon Fowler
The Town of Wayland is facing decisions about upgrading its aging technology infrastructure. It must choose between doing nothing, implementing a town-wide fiber optic backbone that all communications systems connect to over time, or leasing a private or semi-private backbone. Options to consider include new fiber internet, video conferencing over IP, existing technologies, wireless VPNs, and a town owned fiber network. Moving to VoIP phone and Google Apps for email/calendaring could save money. All public buildings need better managed WiFi networks.

The document discusses the evolution of market research from traditional methods to incorporating neuroscience. It notes that traditional research only measures what people say, whereas neuroscience can measure what people think and feel directly. The document outlines three trends driving this evolution: accelerating neuroscience breakthroughs, increasing computing power, and a growing interest in understanding consumer emotions and thinking. It then provides examples of how neuroscience can be applied to market research through measuring deep subconscious responses to messaging and attributes, and optimizing advertising based on neurometrics of effectiveness.

This document discusses the application of neuroscience in media planning and advertising effectiveness research. It explains that neuroscience can provide insights to complement traditional research methods by examining how the brain responds to advertising in different media channels. Specific neuroscience tools like eye tracking, fMRI, and EEG are discussed in the context of answering questions about audience engagement, attention, and emotional responses to ads. While promising, neuroscience applications still have questions to be addressed regarding best practices and suitability for different research objectives. The document advocates that neuroscience can help understand why people shop and buy things, but warns against the idea that it will turn people into "mega-shopping zombies".

"Smart Money on Smart Growth", Evan Richert. Summit 2012, 10/23/12GrowSmart Maine
This document discusses trends in housing preferences and how they are shaping development in Maine. It notes that over half of all homebuyers fall into three categories - Small Town Civics, Young Turks, and Introspectives - but only a small portion of new housing addresses their preferences. Four forces - the recession, gas prices, connectivity, and generation Y - are changing the market. Younger generations prefer walkable urban and small town living near amenities over car-dependent suburbs. Developers are starting to tap into this demand through mixed-use projects, mill redevelopment, transit-oriented development, and infill that support walkability.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
