The document discusses the importance of supporting basic science research to advance medical research and treatment. It notes that Johns Hopkins Hospital pioneered integrating research with medical practice and instruction. To continue making progress, heavy support of basic sciences is needed to encourage future generations of biomedical researchers and understand disease mechanisms. The example is given of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a fatal lung disease, and how basic research on telomeres and the telomerase enzyme led to greater insights into its causes despite there still being no cure. Such discoveries take a long time and require continued funding to benefit future patients.

Unit Lesson
Crossing the Ethical Line in Epidemiology – The Tuskegee Experiment
Certainly one of the world’s leading professional organizations in community health is the American College of
Epidemiology (ACE). Founded in 1979, ACE is involved in formal education of epidemiologists, continuing
education conferences, setting of professional standards, and also establishing ethical guidelines for practice.
That last piece is where we will focus in the Unit VIII lecture. This is so important because the opportunity
exists for epidemiologists to step over the ethical line while trying to prove their point about a particular cause
of disease, a particular natural history of disease, or a particular form of treatment (ACE, 2014).
Conflict - Research and Ethics
Perhaps you have by now heard of the Tuskegee Experiment, an example of truly horrible research ethics
that will hopefully be remembered for a long time, and which will hopefully cause modern medical researchers
to think twice about how they treat the subjects in their studies. What really happened?

The United States Public Health Service designed and performed a study of syphilis beginning in 1932 and
ending in 1972. The study included 600 black men, and 399 of them were positive for late stage syphilis.
Participants in this study were promised free medical care, and were told that they were being treated for "bad
blood." These poor and uneducated subjects were evaluated to learn about the effects of syphilis on black
people. At the time, medical professionals held a theory that white people were affected neurologically by
syphilis, whereas, black people suffered only cardiovascular effects ...

Monthly Social Media News Update May 2024Andy Lambert
TL;DR. These are the three themes that stood out to us over the course of last month.
1️⃣ Social media is becoming increasingly significant for brand discovery. Marketers are now understanding the impact of social and budgets are shifting accordingly.
2️⃣ Instagram’s new algorithm and latest guidance will help us maintain organic growth. Instagram continues to evolve, but Reels remains the most crucial tool for growth.
3️⃣ Collaboration will help us unlock growth. Who we work with will define how fast we grow. Meta continues to evolve their Creator Marketplace and now TikTok are beginning to push ‘collabs’ more too.
1. Research via basic science
Paul B. Rothman, dean of the Medical Faculty and CEO of Johns
Hopkins Medicine, US, on how basic sciences can encourage
biomedical research
2. Contd..
At the foundation of any pioneering medical institute, should be research.
Interdisciplinary, innovative and pioneering investigations create a path for
excellence and ensure that the practice of medicine constantly advances.
The opening of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1889, followed four years later
by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, ushered in a new era in
medicine, integrating research with its instruction and practice.
To move ahead, we need to heavily support basic sciences and encourage
future generations of biomedical researchers. We need to understand the
underlying mechanisms that give rise to disease. For example, idiopathic (of
unknown cause) pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a fatal disease that causes scarring
and stiffening of the lungs, affects about 1,28,000 people in the United
States, with nearly 50,000 new diagnoses each year.
3. Contd..
It turns out some cases of IPF may be caused by telomere shortening,
the shortening of the ends of chromosomes.
We would not know about that phenomenon had Carol Greider, a
molecular biologist at Johns Hopkins and a Nobel Prize winner, not
discovered in 1984 the telomerase enzyme that keeps chromosome
ends long, while studying the organism Tetrahymena. That mechanism
was not only fundamental to one-celled pond dwellers, but to all living
organisms, including humans. Though there is no cure yet for IPF, we
have more answers for patients and possible targets for drug discovery
to someday treat the disease. Discoveries like this take a long time and
require continued funding so that future generations can reap benefits.
