Consequences of Sleep Deprivation to the
Academic Performance of Selected 3rd
Year BSE Working Students of Baao
Community College
Presented by:
BSE 3-C MAJOR IN VALUES EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION
• Sleep is crucial for a healthy lifestyle, providing energy for daily tasks like
walking, thinking, and concentrating.
• It re-energizes the body and positively affects health, emotions, and
academic performance.
• Inadequate sleep can impair well-being and decision-making.
• Sleep is essential for maintaining cognitive function at work, home, and
school.
• Many individuals, particularly working students, don't get enough sleep.
• Sleep deprivation complicates daily functioning and increases the risk of
various health issues.
• It impacts social and professional lives, making learning difficult and causing
frustration and forgetfulness.
• Sleep deprivation is widespread among students and contributes to poorer
academic performance (Henna, 2018).
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
• Sleep Deprivation
- Insufficient duration or poor quality of sleep recognized as a global concern
among students (Ranasinghe et al., 2018).
- High demand for higher education and financial pressure for part-time work
create a challenging scenario (Walker, 2017).
- Sleep deprivation impacts behavior, memory retention, academic
performance, and problem-solving skills.
• Academic Performance
- Crucial for students' educational journey and future endeavors.
- Sleep deprivation linked to lower grades, decreased productivity, mood
swings, and increased stress levels.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
• Baao Community College
- Emphasizes providing quality education while addressing student
well-being.
• Research Objective
- Examine contributors to sleep deprivation and academic
performance.
- Shed light on challenges faced by working students at Baao
Community College.
- Findings may inform interventions to support academic success of
working students, not only at Baao Community College but also in
other institutions.

1.1.Age;
1.2.Gender;
1.3.Year and Section; and
1.4.Course and Major
2.How do respondent’s assess the factors of sleep deprivation among working
students in terms of the following;
2.1.Duration of Sleep
2.2.Sleep Quality
2.3. Work Hours
2.4. Work Shift/ Schedule
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
3.How do the respondent’s assess the impact of lack of sleep among working students
in terms of the following;
3.1.Academic Performance;
3.2.Memory Retention;
3.3.Health Concerns and
3.4.Behavior?
4.Are there any significant difference to the level of students’ behavior of the
respondents in terms of academic performances, memory retention, health concerns
and behavior?.
HYPOTHESES
Ho: There is no significant difference in the level of working
students academic performance in terms of Memory
Retention, Health Concerns, and Behavior.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
• P.F. Strawson's book (1962) explores the consequences of actions in terms of
pros and cons. In philosophy, this concept is known as moral responsibility. Moral
responsibility entails praise, reward, blame, or punishment based on one's moral
obligations.
• It involves three key elements: accountability, freedom, and the potential
positive or negative effects of actions. This hypothesis sheds light on the life
experiences of working students, delineating their advantages and disadvantages.
• Study utilizes Edward Wilson's Sociobiology Theory (1975), Wilson discussed
relationship between social behavior and Charles Darwin's Evolution Theory (1850)
• Sociobiology based on idea of Darwin's natural selection influencing behavior.
Natural selection: process where biological qualities become more or less
common based on influence
• - Study contributes to argument on circumstances influencing decision to be a
working student for education. It helps to understand student behavior in adjusting
to social changes
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
• Study employs Existential Theory, Søren Kierkegaard (1800), focusing on the
meaning of life. Existential philosophy emphasizes growth determined by choices,
freedom, and responsibility. Humans determine meaning in life and make judgments
despite irrational reality.
• Existential Theory divided into religious and secular perspectives.Religious
perspective: free will influenced by beliefs and Psychological viewpoint: everyone
has unique mind and will, decisions are their own.
• Working students have legal rights and can act on their desires. Existential theory
aids understanding of situations where students balance work and study. And it
focuses on human will and influences working students' decisions and perspectives.
• The "zero-sum" model, based on Economic theory of time allocation, suggests
that working students face a trade-off between job and education, leading to
negative educational outcomes such as lower school attendance, increased dropout
rates, and hindered academic success due to limited time and energy allocation.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
• Otherwise, the Threshold Model, predicts positive effects of employment up to a
certain number of hours. In contrary with the zero-sum hypothesis by proposing that
limited work hours can have beneficial impacts on student outcomes.
• Additionally, it highlights the role of work in child development and socialization,
emphasizing long-term consequences beyond the immediate period of work. It
highlights the development of responsibility, independence, and a strong work ethic,
which can impact students' transition to adulthood and long-term labor market
success.

Working Student
FINDINGS
• 1.1.With respect to Age,
the overall respondents
with 52 percent belongs to
20 to 21 years old.
• 1.2.With respect to Gender,
the overall respondents
with 74 percent belongs to
Female.
• 1.3.With respect to Course

respondents with 35
percents belongs to English
Major.
• 1.4.With respect to Year
and Sections, the overall
respondents with 24
percent belongs to 3rd
Year, Section C.
CONCLUSION
• 1.The majority of female
respondents and the
prevalence of English
majors, there may be
nuances in how sleep
deprivation impacts
academic performance that
could be explored further
within these demographic
groups. Additionally, the
concentration of
respondents in specific age
brackets and academic
years may inform strategies
for addressing sleep-related
issues among students at
Baao Community College.
RECOMMENDATION
• It is hoped that the College
Administrator to offer
flexible schedules in
different major and
specialized personalized
advising.
FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
SOP
• Factors of Sleep Deprivation
among Working Students in
terms of Duration of Sleep,
Sleep Quality, Work Hours and
Work Shift/Schedule
FINDINGS
• 2.1.With respect to Duration of
Sleep, participants mostly
respond that they have 5 to 6
hours of sleep at night with 35
responses.
• 2.2.With respect to quality of
sleep, participants mostly
answered that they woke up
during at night 2 times with 18
responses. And out of 62
respondents, there are 48
students answered that they find
it hard back to sleep when they
woke up at night.
• 2.3.With respect to working
hours, respondents mostly
answered that they spend 7 to 8
hours of working with 20
responses.
• 2.4.With respect to the
schedule/shift of work, students
mostly responded that the
working schedule they have is
Part-time with 32 responses.
CONCLUSION
• It can be inferred that there is a
notable correlation between the
participants' working status,
sleep duration, and sleep
quality. The prevalence of part-
time work among the students
may contribute to their
compromised sleep patterns,
potentially leading to sleep
deprivation. Such sleep
deprivation could have
detrimental effects on their
academic performance, as prior
research has demonstrated the
link between inadequate sleep
and cognitive functioning.
RECOMMENDATION
• To address the intersection of
work and sleep among students.
Institutions could implement
policies or programs aimed at
supporting students in managing
their workloads effectively to
safeguard sufficient rest. This
might involve promoting
flexible work arrangements,
providing resources for time
management and stress
reduction, or offering academic
accommodations to alleviate the
burden on students balancing
work and studies. By addressing
the factors contributing to sleep
deprivation, institutions can
help safeguard students'
academic success and overall
well-being.

Experience the stress due to the
combination of work and
studies.
CONCLUSION
• The academic performance and
memory etention of working
students may not be severely
affected by sleep deprivation,
there are notable implications
for emotional well-being and
stress management that warrant
attention and intervention.
RECOMMENDATION
• It is hoped that the College
Administrator to prioritize
strategies aimed at addressing
the emotional and psychological
effects of sleep deprivation
among working students. This
could involve implementing
programs focused on stress
management, mindfulness
practices, or counseling services
tailored to the unique challenges
faced by this demographic.
FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
SOP
• Significant difference to
the Level of Students’
behavior of the
respondents in terms of
Academic
Performances, Memory
Retention, Health
Concerns and Behavior
FINDINGS
• 4.There is no significant
difference when
