How to Approach the Assignment

This assignment asks you to produce a research-based essay on something you use/consume routinely in
your daily life. This can be a food item, a type of fuel, or something more durable, such as an article of
clothing or an electronic device. The possibilities are limitless. Your job is to account as thoroughly as
possible for this item’s contribution to your overall ecological footprint. To do this, you will need to
research information such as where it comes from, how and by whom it is made, the origins of its raw
material inputs, packaging, and how (and how far) it travels to reach you. You will also want to account
for what happens to this item when you finish with it.
Your essay should relate explicitly to principles and practices of sustainability as explored in this course.
Essays must consider both the item’s physical impact on the earth and the positive and/or negative
impacts the item has on human communities involved in and affected by its production, transport, and/or
disposal. You must choose to emphasize either the physical or the social, rather than both. You are
expected to also convey an awareness of the other’s impacts (i.e., if you focus on the physical, you must
convey an awareness of the social, and vice-versa). All essays should also explore and address more
sustainable alternatives to the item under consideration.
Your audience for this essay is an intelligent general readership. The essay should be between 2000 and
3000 words long (that’s 7 to 10 pages of double-spaced text if you’re using standard one inch margins
and 12 point font). In addition, your essay must include a bibliography (using MLA or APA format) of
all sources cited with information drawn from each of the following source categories (the guidelines
below are a minimum):

In this class you have a rare opportunity to develop, revise/edit, and resubmit your work. Your revised exploratory paper (Essay 2) will become the introduction to your research paper. The revised position paper (Essay 3) will become the body. In addition, you will create a conclusion or "solutions" section for the final project. Note, however, that significant revisions are expected, so you should carefully review the edited draft and rubric evaluations for both essays 2/3 before you begin your final essay.

Prepare an 8-10 page research essay that builds upon the single perspective argument paper. The purpose of this assignment is to build upon what you have already created in the course. Therefore, the introduction of your research paper should be drawn from your Exploratory Paper, laying the foundation for the reader by presenting all sides of the issue, the exigence, etc. The body should be drawn from the Position Paper, which incorporates research to support your claim and sub-claims. Obviously, you cannot include the entire portion of each of the previous papers, and your final research paper should show that you’ve developed areas requiring development and made significant revisions to those sections of your papers requiring revision. For the topic you choose:
Establish a clear thesis about your topic as part of the introductory paragraph (often the thesis is the last thing one determines after doing the basic research and outline; however it will be placed in the first paragraph of your paper).
This is a comparative essay. Comparison approached properly will require some critical thinking on your part. Use a point-by-point approach for the essay. That means, if comparing subject A with subject B, don't do the first half of the essay on subject A and then the second half on subject B--that will seem like two (2) separate essays and comparisons will tend to get lost. Instead, you should be mentioning both subjects in most of your paragraphs as you compare them throughout the essay. Comparisons will identify similarities as well as contrasts.
Do not try to do everything on your two (2) subjects. You should end up narrowing your focus to a few insights and issues about the subjects being compared. And, from those fairly specific points of comparison, you will develop a thesis and glean some lessons.
Follow closely the instructions below for your specific topic.
Include a concluding paragraph at the end. This paragraph will, in some way, refer back to the thesis established in your first paragraph, since now you have demonstrated and supported it. It may be here that you also include your observations relating your study to the modern workplace or society (see your topic). Try to finish with flair!

A few words about structuring your paper:
A good paper is one that is built around a clear structure, so you should outline the main points of
your paper before you start writing. It’s easier to overhaul your outline than it is to overhaul a fully
written paper, so spend some time thinking about the structure of your paper before you launch
into the writing.
Your paper should have:
A clear introduction
A body (in which you flesh out your analysis of rhetoric, audience, artifact, and
context)
A conclusion (in which you summarize your argument and findings and “open” the
paper to consideration of broader themes).
WRITING YOUR PAPER
A few words about WRITING your paper:
I require an “introductory paragraph.” It must introduce the topic, state the main
argument of the paper, set forth the plan by which the paper unfolds, and state the

know precisely what the paper is about, its main claims, how it unfolds, and where it will

This assignment asks you to produce a research-based essay on something you use/consume routinely in
your daily life. This can be a food item, a type of fuel, or something more durable, such as an article of
clothing or an electronic device. The possibilities are limitless. Your job is to account as thoroughly as
possible for this item’s contribution to your overall ecological footprint. To do this, you will need to
research information such as where it comes from, how and by whom it is made, the origins of its raw
material inputs, packaging, and how (and how far) it travels to reach you. You will also want to account
for what happens to this item when you finish with it.
Your essay should relate explicitly to principles and practices of sustainability as explored in this course.
Essays must consider both the item’s physical impact on the earth and the positive and/or negative
impacts the item has on human communities involved in and affected by its production, transport, and/or
disposal. You must choose to emphasize either the physical or the social, rather than both. You are
expected to also convey an awareness of the other’s impacts (i.e., if you focus on the physical, you must
convey an awareness of the social, and vice-versa). All essays should also explore and address more
sustainable alternatives to the item under consideration.
Your audience for this essay is an intelligent general readership. The essay should be between 2000 and
3000 words long (that’s 7 to 10 pages of double-spaced text if you’re using standard one inch margins

This is a comparative essay. Comparison approached properly will require some critical thinking on your part. Use a point-by-point approach for the essay. STRUCTURING YOUR PAPER
A few words about structuring your paper:
A good paper is one that is built around a clear structure, so you should outline the main points of
your paper before you start writing. It’s easier to overhaul your outline than it is to overhaul a fully
written paper, so spend some time thinking about the structure of your paper before you launch
into the writing.
Your paper should have:
A clear introduction
A body (in which you flesh out your analysis of rhetoric, audience, artifact, and
context)
A conclusion (in which you summarize your argument and findings and “open” the
paper to consideration of broader themes).
WRITING YOUR PAPER
A few words about WRITING your paper:
I require an “introductory paragraph.” It must introduce the topic, state the main
argument of the paper, set forth the plan by which the paper unfolds, and state the
paper’s conclusion. In brief, after having read the first paragraph, your reader should
know precisely what the paper is about, its main claims, how it unfolds, and where it will
end up.
Write the paper in coherent paragraphs. Each paragraph should flow naturally and
logically from the previous paragraph, and on to the next paragraph, following a clear
train of analysis.
Good writing is clear writing. Write in simple, declarative sentences. Use the active
voice.
Feel free to quote from books, articles or experts, but do not waste space with very
lengthy quotations – briefly paraphrase these passages instead.

Instead of a final exam, you will complete a major research essay project. The research essay project is a mandatory component of the course; you must pass the research essay project to be eligible to pass the course.
The research essay will be based on the following broad topic:
· The role of energy in North American history
Within this broad topic, you will select your own historical case-study subject that addresses the role of energy in North American history. The research essay should be based on both primary and secondary source research. In consultation with your Open Learning Faculty Member, you will choose a case-study subject and submit a proposal for your research essay project.
· Proposal: 5% of final grade

It will be helpful for you to read through this full set of instructions for the research essay project at the beginning of the course to familiarize yourself with the expectations. Introductory reading
Begin by reading the first chapter of Richard White’s 1995 book, The Organic Machine: The Remaking of the Columbia River. In this book, White analyzes the history of the Columbia River as a system of energy flows between the river, salmon, and the human inhabitants of the Columbia watershed.
This first chapter will provide you with a methodology for framing your own case study on the role of energy in North American history.
As you read this chapter, make notes and answer the following questions:

2. How widely or narrowly will you define energy in your own essay?

Choose a historical case-study subject
Because this assignment will be based, in part, on primary source research, you are encouraged to begin by searching for a primary source or set of primary sources on a specific historical case-study subject that addresses the topic of the role of energy in North American history.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
