The document discusses the history and controversy surrounding Mormon polygamy in the United States. It describes how polygamy was originally practiced by some Mormon leaders in the 1800s but was officially banned in 1890. However, some sects like the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) continued the practice secretly. The media helped expose abuses within these polygamist communities, such as underage marriage and the controlling behavior of leaders like Warren Jeffs. Increased media attention on cases like the 2008 Texas raid where over 400 children were removed from the FLDS Yearning for Zion Ranch has put more pressure on authorities to crack down on the illegal practice of polygamy.
The document discusses the ownership of Kindercare, the largest provider of preschool education and childcare in the US. It notes that Kindercare is owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), whose founder Henry Kravis is a close friend of former President George Bush. 3) Destroy the traditional Christian family structure by promoting sexual promiscuity and liberating people from family confines.
4) Make abortion legal and easily accessible to allow freedom without unwanted pregnancies.
5) Make divorce easy and legal to free people from the concept of lifelong marriage.

This document is a research paper on child prostitution in America. It discusses how an estimated 300,000 children in the US are at risk of exploitation through commercial sex. Root causes include lack of secure home environments, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. Pimps recruit children by promising love and money, then control them through isolation and deprivation. Johns create the demand. While laws aim to help victims, authorities often unjustly prosecute children as criminals. The paper argues for amending laws to protect victims, increasing social services and awareness to curb runaways, and punishing pimps and johns rather than children exploited in the trade.
Martin Delany, “Father of Black Nationalism and "Friend and Rival of Frederic...RBG Communiversity
Martin Delany was an important 19th century Black abolitionist and nationalist who argued for Black emigration from the United States. He lived in Pittsburgh for many years and published one of the first Black newspapers there. Though initially collaborating with Frederick Douglass, Delany came to advocate for Black communities leaving the U.S. to achieve equality and rights, traveling to explore potential emigration sites in Africa and South America. Despite their philosophical differences, Delany and Douglass remained lifelong friends and rivals who debated the issues of their time. Delany is now largely forgotten compared to Douglass, partly due to their diverging views on assimilation versus separation.

Washington state has a population of over 7 million people, with 13% living in poverty. The state constitution guarantees absolute freedom of conscience and worship, but this does not excuse acts that threaten public safety. There is ongoing debate around issues of religious freedom and LGBT rights. It also provides details about the demographics of Utah and Salt Lake City, common beliefs and practices of Mormons, and the author's experience living with a Mormon family in Utah during high school.
Marcus Garvey Power Point Presentation-FinalDavonte Logan
This document provides biographical information about Marcus Garvey and discusses his views on black nationalism and pan-Africanism. It notes that Garvey felt the social relations between black and white people made it impossible for blacks to be treated as equals in America. He therefore advocated for the creation of a distinct black civilization in Africa, believing this was the only hope for black people's redemption. The document also examines Garvey's childhood in Jamaica and his decision to openly defend and help improve the black race, despite risks to his own prosperity.

This document discusses the spiritual decline of America by comparing it to the spiritual decline of ancient Judah described in the book of Habakkuk. It argues that America was founded on Christian principles but has turned away from God through increasing sin, compromise with sin, and rejection of moral absolutes and the Bible. As a result, America faces God's judgment, as evidenced by increasing social, moral, and spiritual problems, just as ancient Israel and Judah faced judgment for their departure from God.

The document concludes with some tributes given to Garvey for his work advocating for black rights and empowerment.
The document discusses religious diversity and pluralism in America over time. It notes that there are two contrasting views of America as either a predominantly Christian nation or as a pluralistic society where no one group dominates. It summarizes findings from the Pew Research Center that show the percentage of Americans who identify as Christian has declined in recent years, driven by decreases among Mainline Protestants and Catholics. In contrast, the percentage of Americans with no religious affiliation has risen. Younger generations are more likely to be religiously unaffiliated. The share of non-Christian faiths has also grown modestly. The document suggests strategies for dealing with religious diversity in education that promote respect and sensitivity to different beliefs.

Future scientific discoveries may be what convinces Church leaders to change their position on homosexuality and relationships.
This presentation was made in my legislative process class regarding the legislation of Proposition 8 in California. The presenter, named Tim, shouted down people wanting to debate his points, called me out in the back of the class as a homophobe, ignorant, white trash, wife beating, intolerant Republican, and proceeded to entail that Abraham Lincoln (who was married with 4 kids), President Buchanan, and JESUS CHRIST were all Homosexuals, all while admitting in a defensive posture that he had been "known to date men" from time to time. Any reasonable debate is out the window with this guy, much like Thomas Jefferson said, "If you argue with a fool, nobody watching will be able to tell the difference." Or maybe he was Gay too, I\'m not too sure. I had to leave the room because I was laughing too hard by the time he started referring to Jesus, the alleged Homosexual Vegetarian that the left LOVES!

CMHC Research Report Environment Scan on Canadian Seniors' transitions to Spe...Tricia Khan, MBA
The document provides an overview of an environment scan on Canadian seniors' transitions from private dwellings to special care facilities. It summarizes the methodology, findings and conclusions from a literature review and data collection and analysis. Key findings include that 7.9% of Canadian seniors lived in special care facilities in 2011, with variations across provinces/territories. Health status and availability of care are primary reasons for transitions. Transitions typically occur between ages 80-85 but are influenced by multiple factors. Few seniors transition each year. There are generally three patterns of housing transitions but variations exist based on individual circumstances. Housing preferences often differ from actual transition patterns due to health and other needs.

Polygamy, meaning having more than one spouse at a time, most commonly takes the form of polygyny, where a man is married to multiple women. The Mormon church practiced polygamy until 1890 but then outlawed it. The Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints still allow polygamy today. Warren Jeffs led the FLDS until 2011 and had over 70 wives. Polygamist societies isolate themselves and exert control over populations by banishing young males and giving young girls in marriage. Problems include abuse, inbreeding causing health issues in children, and suspicions of infanticide.
Sexism defines traditional gender roles that view women's work as domestic and of no economic value. This leads to women being paid less than men and lacking rights such as voting. Globally, women are often treated as property under male control. Feminism works to address issues of inequality, such as the wage gap, and increase women's rights and autonomy. While progress has been made, sexism continues to negatively impact women through issues like sexual harassment, violence, and lack of reproductive rights.

Several prominent American evangelical figures like Falwell, Robertson, Dobson, and Phelps are quoted making disparaging claims about LGBTQ people.
This document discusses the views and practices of slavery among three of America's founding fathers: George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. It notes that while these men helped create a nation founded on equality and liberty, two of them - Washington and Jefferson - were slave owners. Washington inherited and grew his slave holdings, though he treated them relatively well and freed them after his wife's death. Adams strongly opposed slavery and never owned slaves. Jefferson owned hundreds of slaves to work his plantation, though he may have fathered children with one slave. The document examines how these men reconciled their positions with the ideals of the new nation.
This document provides background on two influential social science reports from the 1960s - the Moynihan Report and the Coleman Report. The Moynihan Report, authored by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, examined statistics on black family structure and concluded that the deterioration of the black family was a key factor contributing to poverty. It argued for government programs to support the black family. The Coleman Report, mandated by the 1964 Civil Rights Act, was led by James Coleman and found that factors like family background and student composition had a greater impact on student achievement than school quality or funding. Both reports had a major influence on debates around policies related to education and poverty, though they also generated controversy. The document discusses the context and impact of

The Zuni Lhamana: Beyond a Dualistic Framework of Gender
The Zuni are one of the most studied Native American tribes in the United States. There is an old joke that a typical Zuni family consisted of a father, a mother, the children, and an anthropologist!
This vast legacy of anthropological data has left a very clear picture of Zuni society, customs, religion, and of course, sexuality. The Zuni, as were many other Native American tribes, was a sex positive society, with no shame about their bodies and almost no sex taboos, save incest. In comparison with western views, the Zuni were tolerant and understanding about sexuality and gender roles. This tolerance allowed the formation of a third gender, in which anatomical males who preferred the female gender role would simply begin dressing as a woman, doing a woman’s jobs, and having sex with men. Whereas western society would classify this person as a transvestite and/or a homosexual and typically marginalize him, the Zuni society had a socially established role for him.
Anthropologists have called this group of people, berdache, third gender
, women-men
, and two-spirit
, among other names. All mean essentially the same thing so in this paper, the members of the Zuni third category of gender will be referred to using the Zuni word, lhamana. Lhamana specifically refers to men who take the female gender role, and not females who take the male gender role. This was a very rare occurrence and did not have the social acceptance or role as the lhamana, and will be left out of this paper. I will also leave out discussion of We’wha, the most famous lhamana, because new evidence has recently come to light that her predominant role in Zuni society was due more to an ambitious and domineering personality, and not because of her status as a lhamana.
She was an exception to the rule and placing undue emphasis on her would taint the accuracy of this study of the third gender as a whole. The focus of this study is to explain what aspects of Zuni society promoted acceptance of gender variation and the establishment of alternative gender roles, focusing primarily on creation myths, economic roles, sexual and family life, and religion.
The origins of acceptance of the lhamana are found in the Zuni creation myths. On the ancient Zuni journey to find their home, a brother and a sister were chosen to lead the people. At night, the brother forced his sleeping sister to have sex with her, impregnating her. The next morning she gave birth to ten children. The last nine were infertile. The first one was a combination of male and female parts. As the legend says, “from the mingling of too much seed in one kind, comes the two-fold one-kind.
This god’s name was Kolhamana. The Zuni continue to try to find their home, until they meet a hostile group of gods, led by Cha’kwen ‘Oka (or the Warrior Woman).

The document summarizes Jessica Valenti's book "The Purity Myth" which argues that virginity is a social construct used to police and control women. Valenti asserts that male institutions have historically defined and assigned value to virginity. This conflates a woman's sexuality and morality, reducing her worth simply to her sexual history. The myth of virginity continues to be reinforced through popular culture and religious institutions. There is debate around whether public displays of female sexuality can be empowering or harmful.
The Second Great Awakening was a religious revival movement in the early 1800s that spread across America. It revived old churches like the Methodists and Baptists and attracted many converts. Circuit-riding preachers traveled across the frontier to spread the gospel. Charles Finney was a leading preacher of this movement who advocated for social reforms like abolishing slavery and allowing women to pray aloud in church. Joseph Smith claimed to receive golden plates from an angel and founded Mormonism in 1830, publishing the Book of Mormon. However, Mormonism faced opposition and controversy over beliefs like polygamy and modern prophets. The Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 was an important event that began the movement for women's rights in America. Transc
This document discusses polygamy, which refers to marrying multiple spouses. It defines different types like polygyny and polyandry. While practiced in some cultures, polygamy is illegal in Canada and most Western nations. The document outlines some pros and cons, noting that while it satisfies certain desires, polygamy often disadvantages women and children by preserving gender inequality and creating conflicts between co-wives. A history of polygamy in various cultures and religions is provided, as well as its current legal status in different parts of the world.

Media Attention Sparks the Beginning of the end for Mormon
Polygamy
Forms of Polygamy have been practiced in many cultures around the
world since the beginning of mankind. For population purposes it was a
common theme for tribesmen to take multiple wives. Mormon Polygamy
formed its own set of religious rules with the FLDS Church, or the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in 1932 and was practiced in North America
publicly since 1852(WIKI). This strain of Polygamy was founded on the beliefs
that strongly support a male’s religious right to have multiple wives; it was said
that a man with multiple wives, and multiple children, was closest to
exhalation into heaven. The prophet would choose brides as young as seven
years old. In 1890 Mormons banned Polygamy from the mainstream, however
some believers did not stray (WIKI). Polygamy has been widely controversial,
because of the subjectification of women’s basic human rights, but the FLDS
church has defended it as being well within the rights of religious freedom;
although being illegal in North America it is still being practiced under the
authorities’ radar. The media has helped to crack illegal colonies such as the
one run by Warren Jeffs of Short Creek, Arizona. There is a preconceived and
propagated notion among Mormon Polygamist men that they have the religious
right to control, abuse and dominate their wives and children. It is important
that the public listens to the media’s uncovered stories to understand the
degree of brainwashing in polygamy, so that society can better arm themselves
to bring an end to the abuse of Polygamist wives and children.

Many Native American tribes practiced polygamy (generally polygyny)[6]
and European mountain men often took native wives and adopted the practice.
Some tribes seem to have continued the practice into the 20th century (WIKI)
(sic). In the 1930s a Mormon prophet, by the name of Joseph Smith, tried to
revamp the biblical testimonies of polygamy by claiming that God urged him to
do so. In the book of Mormon, the Lord told the prophet Jacob “for there shall
not any man among you have save it be one wife: and concubines he shall have
none… for if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will
command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things” (Jacob
2:27-30) (Mormon.org). In 1844 a man by the name of Joseph A. Kelting
recalled his conversation with Joseph Smith, who confided in secrecy that he
had “had a revelation from God which taught the correctness of the doctrine of
a plurality of wives, and commanding him to obey it…” (Joseph Smiths
Polygamy). Kelting believed Smith to be a prophet and vowed to follow him as
his religious leader, as did many others (Joseph Smiths Polygamy). Nobody
knows how many wives Smith actually had, but was likely higher than 30, and
he had at least one wife who was just 14 years old(Ibid). At that time child
marriage was not deemed as wrong, nobody ever fought against it which in
turn made it possible to abuse young women in this sense. Polygamy became
a significant social and political issue in the United States in 1852 when the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) made it known that
a form of the practice, called plural marriage, was now a part of its doctrine
(WIKI). The FLDS was known to marry within their own bloodline, and force
4. McNally 3
marriage onto siblings within their communities. After the immense legal
issues that derived from the doctrine president Wilford Woodruff officially
voided it on September 25th, 1890 (WIKI). As so many other laws in our
society are broken every day, so are the laws against Polygamy. With no
publicity the government rarely intervenes with these religious sects and
polygamy is still being practiced in the United States of America and Canada.
Some believe that Polygamy was established to gratify men and their
desires for multiple partners. Women are raised to believe that men are closest
to God, and that they are to serve a man’s every need and want- without
protest- and that doing so is considered to be a religious blessing. It has not
been uncommon for already married men, who practice Mormon Polygamy, to
take much younger brides- brides as young as twelve years of age- such as
Marrianne Jessop, a bride of Warren Jeffs. Often these young girls are
promised away to these older men by their prophets, and given away by their
parents or guardians as an offer to God. Young boys of these types of regimes
are not safe either, though. Due to so many wives being taken there is often a
shortage of women, because of this many boys will be cast out of their
communities and abandoned- this is a term referred to as ‘Lost Boys’ (Borger).
Once these boys are cast out of their communities they are believed to never
reach heaven (Ibid). According to author Stephanie Pappas “the LDS Church
emphasizes the importance of innate gender differences and promotes
traditionally masculine traits for men (e.g., strength, leadership) and
traditionally feminine traits for women (e.g., delicacy, gentleness). Women are
5. McNally 4
not allowed to have leadership roles in the hierarchy and are relevant only to
bear children, take care of the home and support their husbands” (Pappas).
Polygamist girls and women are at a greater risk of contracting HIV/Aids, and
other STDs, when their husbands have multiple partners, and women also
have less power to negotiate safe sex due to the inapt obligation to support
their husbands (Polygamist Marriages). That being said, not all Mormons
practice Polygamy, in fact a large percentage of Mormons believe strongly in
Monogamy after the doctrine was abolished in 1890. Recent media in the last
twenty years has opened the door for women who have known nothing but
Polygamy their entire lives. There have been many women claiming to have
been child brides of men well over four times their ages. As these women are
exposed to the rest of the world they begin to realise that they’ve been
brainwashed by their Polygamist leaders, and are not at all as godly as they’ve
been raised to believe. Through the media and word of mouth, polygamist
women have come to learn that they have different rights as human beings and
some of the things they were coerced to do are widely considered to be wrong;
some of the surviving women have begun to act out and attack colonies run by
religious tyrants- such as Warren Jeffs of Short Creek, Arizona.
Warren Jeffs was once a beloved prophet with concubines in Utah and
Arizona. He has since been sentenced to life in a Texas prison for multiple
convictions of child rape (Hyde). Jeffs held the occupation of principal of Alta
Academy; it’s been noted by former students that Jeffs would sneak up behind
students in class, grabbing them by the neck and whispering things like, “Are
6. McNally 5
you keeping sweet or do you need to be punished?”(Hyde). In this era there
was not much for publicity, nor were basic human rights taught in schools-
and especially not in private schools such as Alta. Willie Jessop, the FLDS’ key
legal defender, has since turned away from defending the FLDS. When
questioned about why he abandoned his sect Jessop stated: “Because those
sons of bitches were raping girls in Texas, and they knew it and I knew it,” he
says, “and that battle is still raging today.” (Hyde) Jeffs’ most publicly noted
colonies were based in Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah; he later built
the Zion ranch in west Texas in 2002. The FLDS leadership had total control
over this stretch of desert known as Short Creek; with a combined population
of 8000 it is the biggest polygamist enclave in America. In 2008 Texas police
breached the Zion ranch, which resulted in the removal of over 400 children
(Ibid). Jeffs had a reputation for fancying young girls and in fact had married
several teen brides. One of his brides, Willie Jessop’s niece Merrianne Jessop,
was a mere twelve years old when he consummated the married on a temple
bed, some of his wives were in the same room as this ‘tribute to God’ was
happening (Hyde).
Sects like Short Creek are beginning to gain more attention from the
media, human rights’ protestors and government law officials as Jeffs’ story
unfolds. In fact Scott N. Howell published an article named “Time to end
abuse, welfare fraud in polygamist clans” (Fields-Meyer and Jones).
Additionally, Elizabeth Smart became an incredible advocate for polygamist
women as she gained national fame in 2003 when she was rescued after being
7. McNally 6
kidnapped by a polygamist man by the name of Brian Mitchell; he held her
captive with his wife Wanda for nine months in the hillsides of Utah
(Biography). On October 6th, 2003, Thomas Fields-Meyer and Oliver Jones in
Colorado City wrote for People Magazine an article that explained how TV and
other forms of ‘gossip’ are banned in these communities, making it easier for
prophets to control the minds of their followers (Fields-Meyer and Jones). It is
essential that the media continues to expose Mormon polygamist sects in order
to prevent any further abuse of women and children.
