This document discusses the representation of characters in a production. It draws inspiration from the films "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Bride and Prejudice" in portraying the main character Saira as scheming and secretive about her boyfriend who is a different race than her. The document analyzes posters from the two films to understand how character positioning and colors are used to convey personality traits and contrast stereotypes, which helped inform the development of the main characters in the production.

1. REPRESENTATION OF CHARACTERS

2.  The characters are represented around various races which
seem odd and unlikely but are able to happen. Both characters
contrast the typical stereotype, makes it more eye catching and
interesting for the audience.
 During our research, we focused on two films as our influences
such as; ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ and ‘Bride and Prejudice’ which
helped us a lot to decide and imagine how our production would
turn out and how popular it would be.
 One of our main characters Saira, is being portrayed as a girl
who has a boyfriend that is a different race and is introduced to
her parents but also can show how cunning the character can be.
We decided we wanted our character to be scheming and
secrecy, as the main character in Bend It Like Beckham
(Parminder Nagra) is conveyed to be sly about what she does
and starts seeing a good looking Caucasian man where her
parents don’t know. Also, in Bride and Prejudice (Aishwarya Rai)
is shown to fall in love with a British Caucasian male which the
stereotypes of Indians is where the women should always marry
the same race. This helped us as we used it for our comedy side
of our production and to change up the races for our modern,
young viewers.

3.  As you can see the Indian girl is
portrayed to be scheming, sly and
stubborn. This is shown by the
characters positioning in the poster,
as her back is turned towards us in a
bright pink sari which could connote
love, cultural and obedient
behaviour. However, the pair of
football boots which are hidden
behind her back shows how crafty
her plotting can be. This perfectly
links with our main character Saira,
as she plots something for her
Mother for her own purposes. The
football boots being hidden behind
her back show us as the audience
exactly how the character is
contrasting the typical stereotypes of
how the Indian society can’t play
football. This is also linked with our
production as typical stereotypes are
used for the humour, but also to
show how it is this day and age and
to see if it is followed by the modern
society or not?

4.  This picture shows the main male and
female characters back to back to show the
love and attraction for eachother as others
don’t know what is going on. The two
changes of race but the idea of an Indian
girl with another ethnic man would not
happen or work but gives us the idea to
make it more laughable with a different
ethnic background. The two colours of the
characters can be symbolic as the man is
wearing white which connotes his purity
and an angelic figure whereas the woman
is wearing red which connotes love,
seductive and erotic. Both characters are
shown to be contrasting each other, this
helped us in our production as both
characters contrast each other but in a
hilarity manner. But the colours have to be
matching the character and their
personality so it can make sense to the
audience. The character positioning is
important as it gives away how the
character would be and how confident and
sly Aishwarya Rai looks however, Martin
Henderson shows a calm, sweet, caring
personality. Some of the qualities in these
characters helped us with how we want our
character to be and how they would be
acting with one another. But the way they
act with each other in front of other people
is usually the main problem in a
stereotypical world for Indians.
