Coffee originated in Ethiopia in the 12th century and spread throughout Europe and colonies over subsequent centuries. In the 1970s, institutions like USAID promoted technified coffee production to replace traditional shade-grown methods. This involved increasing yields through practices like removing shade trees, using chemicals, and dense planting. However, it had negative impacts on workers through health issues from pesticide exposure and poor conditions, as well as on the environment from habitat loss, soil degradation, and water contamination from chemicals.
