Rene Descartes was a 17th century French philosopher who is known for developing Cartesian coordinate geometry and the philosophical concept of "I think, therefore I am". He was born in 1596 in France and spent much of his adult life in the Netherlands, dying in 1650. Descartes made influential contributions to mathematics, science and philosophy regarding methodological skepticism and the mind-body problem.
