I researched several food and desserts magazine and scanned them to grasp my genre deeply and understand it very well and set code and conventions.
I also read many of them to decide the contents after which I was able to make my own magazine, challenging the codes and conventions with the
main motive of designing a best magazine.
Beginning with color palette, I wanted a scheme which could easily attract my audience by looks, colors and visuals of the magazine so I inquired in my
survey either my audience wanted open color scheme or close color scheme with majority wishing for open color scheme. So I chose open color palette.
Moving towards the name of magazine, I wanted a masthead which itself highlights the genre of the magazine. I finalized 3 titles which I left upon my
audience to decide in the survey. ‘RELISH’ was finalized by my audience. The overall look illustrated the colorful magazine which would surely attract
the consumers. With an aid of masthead and colorful magazine I would emphasize that the magazine is aimed for both genders and all age-group.
This is the masthead of my magazine which shows a neon colored look recognizable and focused.
3. The following image illustrates the final look of my Cover Page. Following codes and conventions as well as challenging it. An appetizing desserts
picture was placed upon the cover to emphasize what was the inside of magazine which could easily have a position in the market. Some were also
placed on Content Page, keeping in mind that many should not be added to jumble up on page. Here I followed code and conventions as they would
ensure the overall look to be quite alluring.
I had to change a little format during designing the sketch and mockups to fit both content and double page spread more beautifully.
A focus was made on entire look of the cover page and I wanted to put an impression of an occasion on the audience through my main cover. I also
added 3 cover lines and a main article description to highlight the entire magazine and consumers while reading it may be interested in flipping
through pages to read inside also.
4. Here’s clear description of where I followed codes & conventions and where I chose to challenge them. Most of the food
magazine has their main image shot at eye-angle or high angle to fully show what was the food or desserts. My main image was
shot at a little high angle as I wanted my consumers to view entire cake. Where as I challenged my conventions as in food and
desserts magazine never much contains much of other hotels or restaurants. I included 2 restaurants as well as recipes of some
quickly prepared desserts to fulfil the cravings.
5. Relish’s representation is as follows, Images are illustrated(above) to indicate mise en scene and representation is well followed during the shoot.
Some decor accessories were also placed to glamorize the view as well as the background was selected which didn't dominate the Cake. Lamp's
dazzling light emphasized and gave impression of evening formal plus casual event.
The double spread article consists interview of an optimistic male chef and baker at a renowned café which motivate more people to try their skills in
the field of CULINARY ARTS especially to make their Quarantine more adventurous. The article was selected in ideology that even though chef’s life
is not easier, they don’t get any day off as it can be seen that when we have a holiday and got to restaurant for ravishing meal, they are there to
entertain us, working away on public holidays too, even then getting negative comments and getting se-motivated to extreme height. Due to reason,
many hesitate in opting for this path. The interview motivates those who want to pursue their passion and motivates them to advance forward!
6. How your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real
media text?
7. Engaging the possible consumers and target audience prior, during and after the product is quite vital so they know of the up coming
product. I also tried my best to keep my audience up-to-date at all times. First a survey was designed, carried out, leading to results being
evaluated which aided in determining what, where and at what price do my customers want.
Also during production, I shared my activities of designing with target audience through blog posts & social media such as Instagram,
Whatsapp & Snap Chat Stories!
The distributional areas were decided to observe how many and of what category of people were interested in my Food Magazine.
Surprisingly, even though there were many competitors and many other as well as better magazines out there, the survey being answered
by majority was decided to be sold many other cities too.
I included many appealing Unique Selling Points (U.S.P) to try to engage many consumers as well as attract many too. RELISH included
2 vouchers. One of LA ATRIUM’s Brunch and other of a Café. The first issue of the magazine was also announced to be FREE in all
distributing areas. Some recipes of 5-minute desserts were also published to sweeten up Quarantine.
8. As RELISH was a Food & Desserts magazine, it was planned to be distributed to all book shops, stalls and fairs as free sample as the first
issue was decided to be given free. It was also given out in Cafes as well as posters and lastly on rail road stores as a hard copy.
The soft copy could also be published on a professional or as a Pop-Up ad on old or on any new emerging and most visited website.
Magzter. Com, Issuu as well as LinkedIn where many would come to have an idea and understanding when designing own magazine.
Behind the scenes and real time picture of magazine posted are also posted on social media to try to catch attention of many.
9. How did your production skill develop throughout the project?
10. It was quite a long journey, without a doubt being adventurous too, from being a beginner to a professional in Photoshop. When
I started, I was only aware with a few basic tools of Photoshop, but as they say ‘PRACTICE MAKES A MAN PERFECT’, I
gradually got a hang of it. I researched and read many Food Magazine and for practice even designed one. With the help of a
mentor, it was quite a delightful way to learn of editing, cropping and all the way to designing of main cover, content and double
page spread. With a lack of practice in beginning, and being novice, it was quite crucial to remember which tool was of which
purpose, but blog posts and engaging audience and some practice, grasping Photoshop became quite easier!
Also along with Photoshop, carrying out photo-shoot also became very easier, I had to carry out 3 shoots to become a successful
camerawoman! Also I studied many shots and angle used to capture a perfect picture. Designing the magazine also enhanced my
camera skills. There was a lot of difference observe in the first shoot I commenced and the selected shoot I commenced.
In addition to this, extensive research before designing of final magazine and understanding genre more deeply also aided for
other areas of projects. I also became aware of various fonts and colors and what meaning do they delivered. On the other hand I
also learned of blogging as I had never done that before. It seemed quite difficult to understand but as time passed I became a
pro at it!
11. How did you integrate technologies –software, hardware, and online, in this project?
12. Hardware & software were a vital elements for making of any magazine, let alone mine. Hardware used in making of magazine was laptop,
mobile phone, DSLR camera, tripod stand and memory card. They had backup and current pictures stored in them. A high quality Canon
DSLR was used to take pictures along with a tripod stand to level along with mobile was used to make evidences in the form of behind the
scenes. The main role belonged to laptop which fulfilled the tasks of blogging and editing, etc.
Software applications concluded online accessories I used for designing of magazine. One of many important software applications
included Adobe Photoshop, and secondly Blogger, without which it was nearly impossible to commence my work. Photoshop was used as
an editing software and Blogger as my blogging website. Many online presentations were also used, e.g., as LinkedIn, Prezi, PowerPoint &
Microsoft Word.
Google was also of very aid in doing my extensive research regarding my genre. I also looked up Magzter and Issuee to look all prior food
magazine and have an idea of what I wanted for my magazine. All hardware, software and online applications were without a doubt of
great aid during pre-production, production and after production of my magazine.
