Religious Site Visit Assignment The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to visit a new and unfamiliar religious-cultural setting and to learn in an experiential way about the beliefs and rituals of another tradition. You may choose among many houses of worship: Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, etc. Attending a Christian service or the service of the particular religious tradition in which you were raised is prohibited (this means you should not visit any Christian denomination nor a place of worship you are familiar with; the purpose of this assignment is to step outside the box and learn about another tradition). Write a 3-4 page paper, double-spaced, 12 point font, which includes the following information: · The place, time, date, and a physical description of the place. · Description of the ritual you experience: words, actions, people, symbols, songs, etc. · What are the demographics? Who make up the congregation? · Describe any relevant encounters you had with the worshippers. How were you treated? · What are the similarities and differences between this experience and what you experienced growing up? · Reflect on your experience as an onlooker? What did you learn? What surprised you? What questions are you left with? · Elaborate on any other aspect of the experience that left an impression on you. **Please turn in a bulletin or similar document as proof of attendance (scan/email with your paper, or take a picture with your phone and text/email it to me)** **Final due date is November 18 , but you are encouraged to complete the visit and paper at any time during the course (prior to the due date of course)** **Please see a list of possible sites below. This is not a comprehensive list. You may visit any house of worship within the parameters of the assignment. You may want to call/contact the place of worship in advance and inquire about appropriate dress and behavior requirements** St. Louis Religious Contacts: Vedanta Society (Hinduism) Swami Chetananada 205 South Skinker 314.721.5118 The Hindu Temple of St. Louis 725 Wiedman Road 636.230.3300 Jain Temple of St. Louis Mr. Sam Shah 517 Weidman Road 636.225.0485 Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis 517 Weidman Road 636.527.1943 Central Reform Temple (Jewish) Rabbi Susan Talve 5020 Waterman 314.361.3919 Mid-America Buddhist Association Ven.
