open source 3d printer
The whole concept of intellectual property is only stable when copying is difficult and legal penalties mean
significant losses for those who would copy.
3D printing will completely replace vast swathes of conventional manufacturing processes as it becomes less costly.
And what will really drive the cost through the floor is 3D printers that print 3D printers...
the replicating rapid prototyping machine will allow the revolutionary ownership, by the proletariat, of the means
of production.

While uniform building components were
part of the industrial age mode of
manufacture, the information age
suggests mass customization. Where
economy and scales of production once
determined the modular, data and
information now form the context. The open
project uses self-replicating 3d printers to
machine parts from liquid polymner
generated from recycled plastics. The data
itself is generated through an online
networking peer-to-peer system aimed at the
open source sharing of ideas. Econimically
and environmentally sustainable housing
solutions will come from the help and
cooperation of the many, rather than the
select few.

l-system growth series
To mimic a natural system, you must ask how each product fits in—is it necessary, is it beautiful, is it part of a
nourishing food web of industries, and can it be transported, sold, and reabsorbed in ways that foster a forest-like
economy? If we can biomimic at all three levels—natural form, naturalprocess, and natural system—we’ll begin to
do what all well-adapted organisms have learned to do, which is to create conditions conducive.
Janine Benyus
The ability to design protein molecules will ... make possible the construction of molecular machines. These
machines can build second-generation machines able to perform extremely general synthesis of three-
dimensional molecular structures, thus permitting construction of devices and materials to complex atomic
specifications.

Nanoscale robotics opens a path from digital to physical
reality by controlling form at the molecular level. As such, a
group of pre-assembled Nanobots begin the process of self-
replication by using carbon dioxide as raw building material.
Oxygen is off-gassed as a byproduct as the nanobots use
carbon to form an interlocking series of nanotube arms. The
chemical bond that joins the arm of one bot to its neighbor
is controlled by an increasingly complex array of nano-
processors, which are generated during the self-replicating
process. The release and reconfiguration of nanoscale ventilate
carbontubes not only determine the color, scale, and texture
of the built form but also shifts us toward a non static form.
Before the process of self-replication begins, the end-user is
given the opportunity to manipulate variables—the basic
formal grammar of the built form. The grammar itself is an
algorithm in which climate data and geodetic location
become variables that optimize the systems’ use of water,
light, and air, and inevitably affect the over all appearance.
In this case the Lindenmeyer System becomes one such
grammar that is used to determine the nanobot
configuration.. nanobot production rule interpretation exterior radiate

An architecture that is compelled to distort, and that ultimately highlights and questions norms, requires the invention
of surrogate problems.
The effect ... is to suspend familiar binaries : begininning/end, top/bottom, solid/void, inside/outside, open/closed.
Antigravitational, multidirectional, and surrounded by space on all sides, a torus would ideally float unbound.

The definite and indefinite intersect at the plane
of human activity. Movement, competition, body
function, modes of being in the world, (anastalsis)
form a sensorial matrix of being.
The web of natural action is distorted through
theoretical calculation of the indefinite (peristalsis).
The voluntary pursuit of knowledge vermiculates the
anastaltic matrix, carving new paths for existance.
Reconceptualization of physical plane through
process of unfold, fold, bind abstacts the autonomic
and introduces the possibility for carving new paths.
An infinetley looping cinquefoil negotiates the
anastaltic and the peristaltic redistributing the
voluntary and the involuntary.

The distinct fixed entity is replaced with continuity and systems of interdepency, and the division between nature
and technology lose clarity. The stuctual bones of the built environment create direct connections wit h the natural
environment. This loss of visual and technological distinction, resituates mankind as integrated portions of a whole.

In light of the rapid obsolecnce of technologies, our
given program was the creatiion of a partion wall
sp 07 in situ through the reuse of material destined for the landfill.
The VHS and casette tape, outmoded, and
constructed of a material set that prevents immediate
recyclability, was chosen for our project.
The cogs of the VHS have been reapropriated as
cogs in a wall system that can oscilate between the assembled system system closed
public and private.
