Relationships Skills
Building relationships in the workplace is important in creating healthy, stable, and
professional connections with co-workers. Communication comparison is “critical to your ability
to develop and sustain relationship” (Downing, et. al., 2014, p. 275). Building communication
competence is critical for developing a professional reputation and coordinating tasks (Downing,
et. al., 2014).
With these five strategies I will make good work relationships. First strategy I will use is
initiate relationships by making it a point to initiate small talk with people. Second strategy I will
use is being trustworthy by helping out whenever I say I will help out. Next strategy I will use is
being careful what I reveal about myself by not telling them personal things. Another strategy I
will use is confirm or praise others by not pointing out when others are wrong. Last strategy I
will use is being open to criticism by using SUPERIC. I will stop and listen, thank them for
bringing it to my attention and that I understand their concern. Paraphrase what they had said,
ask for explanation or clarification. Reassure them how improving on that is important. State
what your improvement plan is and make the changes.
