It is the expression or application of
human creative skill and
imagination producing works to be
appreciated primarily for their
beauty or emotional power.
What is CONTEMPORARY?
CONTEMPORARY ARTS is the art that
springs out of the present day events
and passions of the society.
REGION 1
ILOCOS REGION
The region comprises four provinces:
IlocosNorte,
IlocosSur,
La Union and
Pangasinan.
Its regional center is San Fernando, La Union. •
The region was first inhabited by the aboriginal
Negritos.
•Elpidio Quirino, Ferdinand Marcos, and Fidel
V. Ramos.
•The province of Pangasinan was transferred
by Ferdinand Marcos from Region III into
Region I in 1973
Native Ilocano songs
The Ilocanos have a handful of
meaningful ethnic songs. These songs
narrate life stories of the native
Ilocanos, which are mostly about
courtship,marriage,occupation and
life.
Pamulinawen (Hardened Heart)—this is the most popular
Ilocano love song, which portrays a girl who does not heed
the pleading of her lover. It compares the heart of a girl to a
hardened flint.
Osi-osi
this -ethnic song portrays the traditional ways of courtship.
•Ayatti Ina (Love of a Mother)i
s a song that expresses how a mother love and takes care
of a child.
•Duayyani Ayat(Love’sLullaby)
is a song that expresses a man’s love for his lady. The man
asks the lady to be careful in changing her mind and
choosing another man. •
DANCES AND
THEATHRICAL
PERFORMANCES
FROM ILOCOS
•A dance in which an oil lamp is balanced on the dancer's head as he
swings around lighted lamps wrapped in porous cloth or fishnet.The
name of the dance comes from the Pangasinense word for swinging.
•The dance is performed by fishermen of Lingayen when celebrating
a good catch. It is accompanied by waltz-like music.
OASIWAS DANCE
•it is a dance during birthday parties and festivities.
•The Kuratsa is a Filipino traditional Dance of Courtship where the
male approaches and courts a lady in a form of a dance.
Kuratsa Pasuquiña.
•it is a dance that portrays a chaste and virtuous Ilocana. This
dance may be performed by four pairs.

REGION
Pamulinawen is the name of a woman made popular in the classic
Ilocano song titled... Pamulinawen,It is celebrated every year in early
FEBRUARY .
•Pamulinawen is a Filipino folk song (in the Ilocano language) that
tells about courting a girl with aheart of stone.

Sta. Maria Ilocos sur ,it features streetdances and cooking
competitions and honours the Sta.Maria's farmers industry and
their housewives cooking skills,it is celebrated every month of
MARCH.
Pinakbet came from contracted ilocani word 'pinakebbet' which
means "shrunk "or "shriveled"

The bangus festival is the brain child of former Dagupan mayor
Benjamin Lim seeking to promote the city as the Bangus (milkfish
)capital of the world.

Visual Arts is a modern but emprecise umbrella
term for a broad category of arts which include
a number of artistic disciplines from various
sub- categories.
ILOCANO HEROES.
JUAN LUNA,The great
filipino painter.
Juan Luna was a patriot ,but he was more known
as the great Filipino painter.He was born on
october 23,1857 in Badoc ILOCOS Norte.
In Rome,Luna exposed to the immortal works of the
Renaissance.In here he painted his "DAPHNE E CLEO
"where he received a silver palette from the LICEO
ARTISTICO DE MANILA.
MUSICAL
INSTRUMENTS
>bamboo instruments
Has been the source of many instruments in the
province (pito flute)KULKULTONG,(Bamboo zither) and
(jaws harp)
Other traditional instruments are LUDAG (log
drum )and TANGGUYOB (carabao horn.)

(LIFE OF LAM -ANG)
This is an epic poem from ilocano people from Ilocos
region.It is believed that it was recited and written
iloko originally thru the priceless efforts or various
poets and believed that it was pass on through
generations.

language is a historical novel written by
Filipino novelist,scholar and labor leader
"Isabelo delos Reyes"

Pedro Bukaneg was a Filipino poet.Blind since
birth ,he is the acknowledged author of the
Ilocano epic BIAG ni Lam-ang (LIFE OF LAM -
ANG).He is considered as a " father of ilocano
literature"

rendered as "Ang sing sing ng dalagang
marmol" in Tagalog language is a historical
novel written by Filipino novelist,scholar

It is known as "city of flowers "and also describe as "Asia's
LATIN CITY " that's why their main dialect is chavacano

Asik
Asik is a solo dance from Mindanao that is usually done
before the performance of singkil .the umbrella bearing
attendant ,perform this dance to win her sultan masters
favor.
SINGKIL
SINGKIL originates from maranao people who
inhabit the shores of lake Lanao .it is particularly
only for royalty women serve as either a conscious
or unconscious advertisement to potential
suitors.The dance takens it's name from the heavy
rings worn on the ankles of the Muslim princess.
KINI -KINI
KINI KINI represents the sophisticated women of the
royal maranao .movement and shapes of their walk
are very articulate and their scarves represent their
fluidity and grace. Their grade is a characteristic of
their good education.

ZAMBOANGA
PENINSULA
HUDYAKA FESTIVAL
HUDYAKA which means "revelry" in Bisaya is an annual festival that is
attended by contingents from the whole ZAMBOANGA province
The festival celebrates the founding of the province and the cities and
municipalities in ZAMBOANGA usually sends in contingents to compete.
A week long celebration from may 29 to June 7
KINABAYO FESTIVAL
Held in DAPITAN city and zamboanga del
Norte;colorful pageant re inacting the Spanish
moorish war.It celebrated every month of July 25
HERMOSA FESTIVAL
Hermosa FESTIVAL or popularly known as fiesta Pilar
(held in ZAMBOANGA city)
Held in honor of the miraculous image of our lady of the
pillar the patroness of Zamboanga city which held every
October 12
BUKLOG FESTIVAL
The BUKLOG is one of the religious rituals and ceremonies held in
ZAMBOANGA del sur by the subanens.A group that derives it's name
from suba (river)because of preference to settle near the river and
mountains streams.
The subanens have held staunchly to this ancient ritual to
honor the spirits on which they rely for an abundant harvest
and protection from misfortune .

painter ,and sculpture with a stye varied as her other
talents.
MOTHER OF PERPETUAL

It is a mixed media arts created by ICELLE BORJA that
made from old wood beveled pannel to complete
the artwork.

BRIDE)
This painting was done and used in oil on canvas
,created by WINNER JUMALON a Filipino
contemporary visual artists based in manila but
originally born on zamboanga,he also contributed to
the rise of surrealism and expressionism.

This painting was created by GIEWARD J HULAGNO a
Filipino watercolorist painter from ZAMBOANGA DEL
SUR .
Watercolor is used in this painting .
SELF PORTRAIT
The sculpture made out of plaster of Paris created
by ICELLE BORJA (it is soft mixture of lime with sand
or cement and water to form a smooth surface
when dried )

CARAGA - originated from the word "kalag"that
means "spirits of the soul "
It is also called the region de gentle animosa or region
of spirited men
It is composed of four provinces;

DAY ASAN (FLOATING
VILLAGE)
Popularity know as "the Venice SURIGAO" The technique
sight is created by the villages houses erected on
wooden stilts and bedded rocks and the villagers
commenting by paddle boats throughout waterways.

More than 500 years old this was declared a

Every June 19 a Thanksgiving dance festival is celebrated of the
manobo tribe.
This is a harvest festival in Manobo term where the manobo asks their
supreme being to shower them with blessings during a ritual where they
perform a dance
SIRONG FESTIVAL
Every 15th day of august in Cantilan a war dance between
Muslims and Christians reflecting the christianization of
the early cantilangnons .uniquely portrayed here is the
"Escrima"( Arnis)and "Alabacion"(chanting to a goddess)

CABADBARAN ANCESTRAL house ais predominantly old
Spanish architecture.The most prominent of them is the
atega ANCESTRAL home .the biggest and most beautifully
preserved in CARAGA.
ARAW NG AGUSAN DEL NORTE
This is founding anniversary celebration of the province of
AGUSAN DEL NORTE every June 13-17

NALIYAGAN FESTIVAL
The festival depicts the Agusanon culture and heritage ,Natives from far
flung areas of the provinces participate in the festival by displaying their
skills and gracefulness in a natural way
Naliyagan Festival is Agusan del Sur's province-wide festivity which
coincidentally starts on June 12 which is the Philippine Independence Day and
culminates on the Foundation Anniversary on June 17.
