Allan Bakke, a white male, was twice rejected from UC Davis medical school while minority students with lower scores were admitted through a special admissions program that reserved 16 of 100 spots for disadvantaged and minority applicants. Bakke sued UC Davis for violating the Equal Protection Clause and Civil Rights Act, arguing he was a victim of reverse discrimination. The Superior Court found the special admissions program unconstitutional but did not force Bakke's admission, while the Supreme Court of California declared the program violated the Constitution and ordered Bakke be admitted.
