Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. 1. Ha, Meem. Its approaching near.
Ha-Miim = To heat or melt something, to be or become hot, to become black, to be rendered black by heat, to be affected with fever, hasten the going or
departure of (a camel), to decree or appoint a thing or matter, blacken one's face with charcoal, approach or draw near to someone, desire/seek to obtain or
demand something from a person, to be affected with confusion/perplexity/fear/impatience/anxiety, to be disquieted or agitated or grieved. To clean out mud
(from a well). Hama’un: black feted mud, mud transmuted or moulded into shape, slack mud.
2. The revelation of the Book is from The One To Serve/Allah, the Exalted
in Might, the Wise.
3. In the heavens and the earth are proofs for those who are convinced.
4. And in your own creation, and in the creatures The One scattered, are
evidences for people of firm conviction.
5. And in the alternation of night and day, and in the sustenance The One
To Serve/Allah sends down from the sky, with which The One revives the
earth after its death, and in the circulation of the winds, are marvels for
people who reason.
6. These are The One To Serve/Allah’s Verses in which The One recite to
you in truth. In which message, after The One To Serve/Allah and The
One revelations, will they are convinced?
7. Woe to every criminal liar.
8. Who hears The One To Serve/Allah 's revelations being recited to him,
yet he persists arrogantly, as though he did not hear them. Announce to
him a painful punishment.
2. 9. And when he learns something of The One’s revelations, he takes them
in mockery. For such there is a shameful punishment.
10. Beyond them lies Hell. What they have earned will not benefit them at
all, nor will those they adopted as protectors instead of The One To
Serve/Allah. They will have a terrible punishment.
11. This is guidance. Those who blaspheme their Regulator’s revelations will
have a punishment of agonizing pain.
12. It is The One To Serve/Allah who placed the sea at your service, so that
ships may run through it by The One’s command, and that you may seek
of The One’s bounty, and that you may give thanks.
13. And The One placed at your service whatever is in the universe and
whatever is on earth—all is from The One. In that are evidences for a
people who think.
14. Tell those who are convinced to forgive those who do not hope for the
Days of The One To Serve/Allah. The One will fully recompense people
for whatever they have earned.
15. Whoever does a good deed, it is for him/herself; and whoever commits
crime, it is against it; then to your Regulator you will be returned.
16. The One gave the bonded people/Israel the Book, and wisdom, and
prophecy; and The One provided them with the good things; and The
One gave them advantage over all other people.
3. 17. And The One gave them precise rulings. They fell into dispute only after
knowledge came to them, out of mutual rivalry. Your Regulator will judge
between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding the things they
differed about.
18. Then The One set you upon a pathway of conviction, so follows it, and
do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know.
19. They will not help you against The One To Serve/Allah in any way. The
extremists are allies of one another, while The One To Serve/Allah is the
Protector of the productive.
20. This is an illumination for mankind, and guidance, and mercy for people
who are convinced with certainty.
21. Do those who perpetrate the criminal deeds assume that The One will
regard them as equal to those who are convinced and do productive
deeds, whether in their life or their death? Criminal is their judgment!
22. The One To Serve/Allah created the universe and the earth with justice,
so that every soul will be repaid for what it has earned. And they will not
be wronged.
23. Have you considered him who has taken his desire for him to serve/god?
The One To Serve/Allah has let go him astray, and has sealed his hearing
and his heart, and has placed a veil over his vision. Who will guide him
after The One To Serve/Allah? Will you not reflect?
4. 24. And they say, “There is nothing but this our present life; we die and we
live, and nothing destroys us except time.” But they have no
knowledge of that; they are only guessing.
25. When The One’s clarifying Verses are recited to them, their only
argument is to say, “Bring back our ancestors, if you are truthful.”
26. Say, “The One To Serve/Allah gives you life, then The One makes you die;
then The One gathers you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there
is no doubt. But most people do not know.”
27. To The One To Serve/Allah belongs the dominion of the universe and
the earth. On the Day when the Hour takes place, on that Day the
falsifiers will lose.
28. You will see every community on its knees; every community will be
called to its Book: “Today you are being repaid for what you used to do.
29. This The One’s Book speaks about you in truth. Book have been
transcribing what you have been doing.”
30. As for those who are convincedd and did productive deeds, their
Regulator will admit them into The One’s mercy. That is the clear
triumph.
31. But as for those who are not convinced: “Were My revelations not recited
to you? But you turned arrogant, and were guilty people.”
32. And when it was said, “The promise of The One To Serve/Allah is true,
and of the Hour there is no doubt,” you said, “We do not know what the
Hour is; we think it is only speculation; we are not convinced.”
5. 33. The evils of what they did will become evident to them, and the very
thing they ridiculed will haunt them.
34. And it will be said, “Today The One forget you, as you forgot the
encounter of this Day of yours. Your abode is the Fire, and there are no
saviors for you.
35. That is as/because you took The One To Serve/Allah’s revelations for a
joke, and the worldly life lured you.” So today they will not be brought
out of it, and they will not be allowed to return.
36. Praise belongs to The One To Serve/Allah; Regulator of the universe,
Regulator of the earth, Regulator of humanity.
37. To The One belongs all supremacy in the universe and the earth. The
One/He is the Majestic, the Wise.
