Materials absorb water in different ways. An investigation showed that a kitchen towel or paper was the most absorbent material, soaking up water droplets, while plastic and tin foil were the least absorbent, with water beads forming on top. The document tasks the reader to find common materials like wood, metal, and plastic around the home, consider a concept cartoon about water absorbency, and perform an experiment comparing how much water a tea towel, tin foil, plastic bag, and paper towel absorb.
John Hume was born in Northern Ireland in 1937. From 1925 to 1965, laws discriminated against Catholics, making them poorer and living in worse conditions with no way to improve their lives. Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., Hume led peaceful protests and sit-ins to highlight Catholic grievances. Though violence did occur during "The Troubles", Hume remained committed to non-violence and helped establish a party seeking a just, peaceful solution. Key to getting the IRA to call a ceasefire and the Good Friday Agreement, Hume worked for decades for peace in Northern Ireland.

Trade wind deserts are formed by the Hadley cell circulation pattern. Warm air rises at the equator, causing low pressure. As the air moves away and cools, it sinks over the tropics, creating high pressure that prevents rain formation. No rain leads to desert conditions in these areas. Rain shadow deserts occur when moist air is forced to rise over hills or mountains, condensing and raining on one side while dry air sinks on the lee side, creating a desert.

Day 3 has students write up and draw the experiment from Day 2.
The water cycle begins with evaporation, where the sun heats water in bodies of water causing it to evaporate into vapor and rise into clouds. Within clouds, condensation occurs as the vapor condenses into liquid water droplets due to cooler temperatures. The clouds then transport the condensed water through precipitation, which returns the water to bodies of water through rain or snow, completing the accumulation stage of the water cycle.
The Japanese launched a surprise attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii on December 7th, 1941. They destroyed many American battleships and planes, killing over 2,400 American soldiers. This attack drew the United States into World War II by provoking a declaration of war against Japan. Pearl Harbour was a major US naval base located in the Pacific Ocean between California and Japan. The Japanese had intended to weaken the US Pacific fleet stationed at Pearl Harbour to prevent America from interfering with their expansion in Asia.
D-Day occurred on June 6, 1944, when Allied forces launched major attacks on five beaches along the coast of Normandy, France. The attacks involved over 425,000 soldiers from countries like the U.S., Britain, and Canada who stormed the beaches and engaged in intense fighting with German forces. It was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and marked a turning point in World War 2 by undermining Germany's control of Western Europe. While the invasion was a military success that contributed to Germany's defeat within a year, it came at a massive human cost with over 425,000 casualties during the Normandy campaign.

The 1916 Rising in Dublin began on Easter Monday when 150 Irish Volunteers marched from Liberty Hall to the General Post Office (GPO) under the command of Pádraig Pearse. Pearse proclaimed the Irish Republic from the GPO and the Irish flag was raised. Over the next few days, Volunteers occupied other buildings around Dublin and fought British troops. On Thursday, as the GPO burned, Pearse ordered the evacuation and surrender. By 7pm that evening, the leaders had surrendered, ending the Rising after six days of fighting and over 200 British casualties.

The document discusses facts about planet Earth. It describes Earth's three main layers - the crust, mantle, and core. The crust is made up of tectonic plates that are constantly shifting due to convection currents in the mantle. This movement of the plates over millions of years can cause continents to collide, drift apart, or move past each other in the process of continental drift, which is still occurring today.
The Easter Rising took place in Dublin in 1916 and was the first rebellion in Ireland since 1798. About 1,250 Irish Republican Brotherhood members, Irish Citizen Army members, and Cumman na mBan members seized control of parts of Dublin, with their headquarters at the GPO. Pádraig Pearse read the Proclamation of Independence from the GPO but after fierce fighting, the rebels surrendered to British forces the following Saturday. Elizabeth O'Farrell, a midwife and member of Cumman na mBan, served as a messenger and nurse during the Rising and delivered the surrender message to the British Army, though she was later imprisoned for months.
Victorian coal mines relied heavily on child labor to perform dangerous jobs. Children as young as 2 worked long hours underground, often 18 hours a day, performing tasks like pushing coal trucks along dark, dirty tunnels or opening and closing ventilation doors in isolation. While underground conditions were difficult, children working above ground sorting coal at least had access to daylight and fresh air. Miners would take simple meals like bread and cheese or tea down into the mines to sustain their long work.
The potato famine occurred from 1846 to 1852 when a potato disease called blight arrived in Ireland and Scotland, possibly from ships from America. The blight caused potatoes to rot in the soil, resulting in more than 1 million people starving to death in Ireland and many more becoming sick. Many poor Scots and Irish fled the famine on ships to America and Canada, but these "coffin ships" earned their name because so many passengers died during the journeys, with over 20,000 dying in ships to Canada alone in 1846-1847. The rural poor in Ireland were most heavily impacted as they relied almost entirely on potatoes for their diet.
Sir George Everest first recorded the location of Mount Everest in 1841 and named it Peak XV. It was later renamed in 1865 to Mount Everest to honor him. Mount Everest is located between Nepal and Tibet, stands over 29,000 feet tall, and was first successfully climbed by many notable adventurers including the first woman Junko Tabei and first blind climber Erik Weihenmayer.
Nuclear power generates electricity through fission, which is the splitting of atoms to release energy. It produces no air pollution since it does not burn fuel like coal plants. While risks exist such as potential meltdowns, nuclear power is a clean and safe alternative that provides a significant portion of the world's energy needs. It has also been used to develop nuclear weapons, though the technology was originally developed in the early 20th century by German scientists.
Electricity powers many modern devices and is generated mostly through burning coal, but some is now created via wind farms. It is dangerous and even lethal to humans but provides a clean energy source. Most electricity in Ireland is produced by the ESB at coal-fired power stations like Moneypoint, though renewable wind power is growing as an environmentally-friendly alternative energy generation method.
Thomas Alva Edison was born in 1847 in Ohio to Samuel and Nancy Elliott Edison. He was known as Al growing up and had six siblings. Edison built his first science lab at age 10 and worked to improve the light bulb, successfully producing lasting light in 1879. He died in 1931 in New Jersey.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
