Hello and welcome everybody. My name is Falah Al ajmi from Kuwait.
I will begin my presentation with this first slide with my cover page that contains all the details for my presentation brief.
My topic is about building materials in GCC countries. There are many factors why I choose this topic:
I am an architecture major
I have a keen interest in buildings and how they are made
Environmental concerns
In the past GCC countries ( Like Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar โฆect) used mud, dry stone and coral gathered from reefs for building. All of which are primitive building materials.
Nowadays, these countries have started using more modern building materials such as steel that is added to concrete to make it stronger.
For future building materials aluminum is an essential material that would help reduce energy costs. Aluminum helps prevent hot air from entering from outside and cold air from escaping from inside. In addition, gulf countries should invest more in green initiatives.
To begin with I took my teachers advice and went on google scholar which is quite different from regular google that we use. It had better information which was documented and well organized.
In addition, I logged on to UWE library and started looking for articles on the topic but most articles were very long and difficult to read. I felt it was difficult for my current level of English.
Also, I tried searching different websites trying to find more information on the topic such as governmental websites, corporate websites but I did not learn much from them.
Finally, I found several articles that supplied me with the information needed to write my paper which I ended up using in my reference list.
The process was time consuming, tiring and very new to me but there is a first time for everything.
Future difficulties for GCC aluminium producers include coping with severe environmental concerns, fluctuating London Metal Exchange (LME) pricing.
GCC countries are known for high temperatures which results in high use of energy for cooling. Using sustainable building materials can help reduce energy consumption and save money.
Throughout the course I have learned more and more on the used building materials in GCC countries.
For the first time I used google scholar and it was a unique experience.
UWE library has a vast number of articles and is useful.
I learned how to reference and use paraphrasing and realized how important they are in my studies.
I became better in computer skills such as word and teams.
Of course there are some negatives:
I need to work more on my time management and not leave everything to last minute.
I need to enrich my use of academic words for writing.
I need to become better at researching and know which sources are suitable and which are not.
