Michelle Ufford of Netflix presented on their approach to data quality. They developed Quinto, a data quality service that implements a Write-Audit-Publish pattern for ETL jobs. It audits metrics after data is written to check for issues like row counts being too high/low. Configurable rules determine if issues warrant failing or warning on a job. Future work includes expanding metadata tracking and anomaly detection. The presentation emphasized building modular components over monolithic frameworks and only implementing quality checks where needed.

Netflix is a famously data-driven company. Data is used to make informed decisions on everything from content acquisition to content delivery, and everything in-between. As with any data-driven company, it’s critical that data used by the business is accurate. Or, at worst, that the business has visibility into potential quality issues as soon as they arise. But even in the most mature data warehouses, data quality can be hard. How can we ensure high quality in a cloud-based, internet-scale, modern big data warehouse employing a variety of data engineering technologies?
In this talk, Michelle Ufford will share how the Data Engineering & Analytics team at Netflix is doing exactly that. We’ll kick things off with a quick overview of Netflix’s analytics environment, then dig into details of our data quality solution. We’ll cover what worked, what didn’t work so well, and what we plan to work on next. We’ll conclude with some tips and lessons learned for ensuring data quality on big data.

Serverless is the design pattern for writing applications at scale without the necessity of managing infrastructure. This is done across the continuum of the cloud—from storage as a service to database as a service—but the center of serverless is functions as a service (FaaS). (Current FaaS offerings include AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, and Google Cloud Functions.) Now processes run for milliseconds before being destroyed and then get instantiated for subsequent requests.
Serverless adds simplicity and a new economic model to cloud computing, but it creates some unique security challenges. In serverless architectures, technologies like antivirus and intrusion detection become meaningless. James Wickett explores practical security approaches for serverless in four key areas—the software supply chain, the delivery pipeline, data flow, and attack detection—and examines how traditional approaches need to be adapted to serverless.
Even if you don’t have any experience with serverless, don’t worry; this session starts with the basics. You’ll learn what serverless is (hint: it’s still being defined) and practical patterns for serverless adoption.

Uponor Exadata e-Business Suite Migration Case Study

The migration was completed within 3 months and resulted in significant performance gains across key business processes. Lessons learned included benefits of using Exadata-specific tools and configurations and importance of testing database-specific functionality during migration.

JavaScript is a scripting language used to make web pages interactive. It was originally developed by Netscape under the name Mocha, then renamed LiveScript, and finally JavaScript. JavaScript can access and manipulate HTML elements on a page, add interactivity, and validate form data before submission. It runs in the browser rather than on the server. Common JavaScript statements include if/else, switch, for loops, while loops, and functions. The Document Object Model (DOM) represents HTML documents as objects that JavaScript can manipulate.
How to empower community by using GIS lecture 2

Uponor Exadata e-Business Suite Migration Case Study
Uponor, a plumbing solutions company, migrated their Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle Business Intelligence environments from traditional hardware to Oracle Exadata in order to improve performance, scalability, availability and manageability. The migration was completed within 3 months and resulted in significant performance gains across key business processes. Lessons learned included benefits of using Exadata-specific tools and configurations and importance of testing database-specific functionality during migration.

In this session, we'll share insights on how we used PostgreSQL to facilitate precise searches across multiple fields in our mobile application. The techniques include using LIKE and ILIKE operators and integrating a trigram-based search to handle potential misspellings, thereby increasing the search accuracy.
We'll also discuss how the azure_ai extension on PostgreSQL databases in Azure and Azure AI Services were utilized to create vectors from user input, a feature beneficial when users wish to find specific items based on text prompts. While our application's case study involves a drug search, the techniques and principles shared in this session can be adapted to improve search functionality in a wide range of applications. From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
