companies. Technology-driven digital
transformation is expected to drive further shifts
in this new normal.
The industry will witness the adoption of
innovative technologies driven by emerging
trends. BFS organizations will increasingly
undertake digital transformation to broaden
their capabilities, and maturing FinTechs will
forge partnerships that drive disruptive growth
and customer-focused innovation.
Here, we explore some trends that will shape
the future of the BFS industry
The most prevalent trend in today’s
financial services industry is the shift to
digital, specifically mobile and online
banking. In the era of unprecedented
convenience and speed, consumers don’t
want to trek to a physical bank branch to
handle their transactions. While on the one
hand, banks are releasing new features to
attract more customers and retain the
existing ones, on the other hand, startups
and neo banks with disruptive banking
technologies are breaking into the scene.
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the
banking industry can revolutionize the way
banks operate and provide services to
their customers, improving eciency,
productivity, and customer experience.
In the age of disruption, manufacturers need to
constantly find innovative ways to overcome challenges
like data sitting in silos, downtime (which could be
prevented), rigid production and labor shortage issues.
Companies need to listen to their operators and
technicians and enable them to have a say in the
day-to-day processes. Issues like being unable to find a
product/part on the floor lead to unnecessary delays,
miscommunication, and dissatisfaction among workers
The banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI)
sector has been at the forefront of adopting AI and
machine learning technologies. AI has enabled these
industries to automate processes, reduce costs, and
improve the customer experience. With the advent of
digitization and the increasing amount of data available,
banking, financial services, and insurance companies have
been leaders in using AI and machine learning.
Metaverse has become ae buzzword in the tech industry. Not a single day goes by without a mention of it
in the media, especially around investments, startups building components, new platforms being
announced and large companies entering this world of digital engagement. There is undeniably a huge momentum of an almost real 3D virtual world, and the clarion call was perhaps Facebook rebranding itself
as Meta which will perhaps be remembered as a red letter moment in the evolution of the Metaverse.
Content is one of the most commonly consumed resources in online marketplace. Still,
most organizations struggle to effectively monetize it. Inability to implement viable
and scalable monetization methods not only keeps organizations from discovering
growth opportunities, but can also lead to poor customer experiences.
Digitalization has transformed the way business’s function. With the evolution of technologies, attackers are also evolving. They are finding innovative and more invasive ways to attack organizations. Due to this, the organization's security operations center (SOC) is expected to be
more agile and dynamic in detecting and responding to attacks. Most organizations' security operations and incident response teams are overworked due to high volumes of security threats and alerts that they need to manage every day.
Cloud technology is no longer a new player in the market,
but it’s a mature and integral part of the IT landscape and a
key parameter in driving business growth. It is an
indispensable topic among CXOs. A research by Fraedon has
found that almost half of the banks find their legacy
systems to be the biggest hindrance in their growth.
Client is the leader in work orchestration and observability. Software platform helps enterprises more effectively plan, orchestrate and audit the human and automated activities that drive critical events, such as technology releases, resilience testing, operational readiness and major incident recovery.
A Robust Privileged Access Management (PAM) forms the
cornerstone of an enterprise cybersecurity strategy, providing greater visibility and audibility of an organization's
overall credentials and privileges.
The global disruption due to the pandemic has massively impacted organizations and the way they function.
Organizations are shifting towards a virtual environment by adopting cloud and automation to support,
monitor, and deploy exceptional service to their end-users. But how to keep the end-users connected to the
digital workplace securely during disruption is a big challenge
Let us understand some of the infrastructural and
security challenges that every organization faces today
before delving into the concept of securing the cloud
data lake platform. Though Data lakes provide scalability,
agility, and cost-effective features, it possesses a unique
infrastructure and security challenges.
European government in 2016 adopted General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and was
put into effect on May 25, 2018, replacing the 1995’s Data Protection Directive to protect the
personal information of EU citizens. GDPR aims to govern personal data processing and ensure
processing is fair and lawful. It is also designed to emphasize the fundamental right to privacy.

The Retail industry today is dealing with the concerning challenge of rising costs of transportation,
driven by a shortage of trucks and truck drivers, availability of raw material and unprecedented
demand spikes across categories. Retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond have recently warned investors

Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

3. DO YOU
KNOW
The Retail industry today is dealing with the concerning challenge of rising costs of transportation,
driven by a shortage of trucks and truck drivers, availability of raw material and unprecedented
demand spikes across categories. Retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond have recently warned investors
about the impact of rising freight costs on earnings. As overall freight costs can constitute up to
10% of total expenditure, efficiency in freight invoice management is critical to managing
transportation budgets.
The current practices of auditing freight invoices in the retail sector are mostly manual and
inefficient. With multiple hand offs throughout the multi-modal supply chain, the manual effort
that goes into auditing voluminous invoices on an ongoing basis consumes both time and money.
Discrepancies and errors in the invoicing process cause a direct impact on transportation costs for
Retailers due to the high dependency on 3PL services, thereby impacting
overall profitability.
Without an automated system in place to audit the complete spend coverage of an organization,
the overall accuracy of manually approving and certifying the correctness of spend remains an
educated guess. The industry is moving towards exploring applications of RPA, AI and ML in
verification of spend coverage, bringing huge benefits in completeness of coverage, contract terms
validation, proactive audit, duplication, fraud detection, verification of taxes, discounts, and other
areas. This Whitepaper aims to showcase how intelligent automation using RPA in Freight Audit
can help increase the accuracy of invoice certification and prevent losses due to excessive and
incorrect spend.
The world of automation has changed in the past year. Just six months ago, tech and
business leaders would lightly suggest automation ideas, jockey for budget, and get nods
and smiles for their efforts but little commitment. Now, automation has moved
to heated board-level discussions that often end with statements such as
“If we don’t automate everything we can, we may not survive.”

According to research, 15% of all carrier invoices are incorrect and almost 80% of shippers overpay for freight
services. This provides an ideal platform for applying automation concepts .
Automation has been instrumental in enhancing business processes, saving costs, and optimising workflows
across the world. It ensures that all possible chances of human errors are eliminated and the process is
completed as soon as possible with utmost precision. The workforce involved in this entire process could be

TRENDS IN FREIGHT AUDIT
Some of the trends in freight invoice audit reported by Cerasis (a GlobalTranz Company), have been mentioned below:
Leveraging automation, AI and ML to continuously
improve supply chain systems have huge potential.
This so-called robot worker or RPA (Robotic
Process Automation) bots, within the machine
has the potential to replace repetitive processes
transforming freight invoice audit. Since auditing is
a complicated process that involves matching data
between invoices and appropriate documentation,
it is a logical choice to use RPA.
In all aspects of both RPA and auditing throughout
the supply chain, technology will become the
primary factor. Moreover, consider the compliance
effects of freight invoice audit. Shippers may
reduce risk without actually raising a finger. There
are capabilities of analytics; reduction in cases of
over-billing, under-billing, inaccurate classification
of freight, under-standard reporting by carriers of
freight status, and numerous other data points.
Third-party auditing firms can manage
requirements throughout the supply chain,
including requests for replenishment, requests for
freight quoting, data aggregation, and information
dissemination across the enterprise. As a result,
invoice accuracy, timeliness, and disbursement
of payments are done more efficiently, enhancing
coordination across the supply chain. Therefore,
for small to mid-size shippers, third-party invoice
auditing tools and capabilities will become the
new normal.
7. Shippers that realise lower labour
costs can reinvest in logistics
management through automated
audit
While completing payments,
automated systems can perform
real-time audits, minimizing costs
along the way.
Freight Invoice Audit Trends will
continue to search for opportunities
across technology for improvement
Savings made from the synchronisation of trends
within the enterprise through freight invoice audit
can be reinvested within the company to take
advantage of additional types of automation,
including robotic picking , packing, marking, and
even shipping. In a way, the road to freight
invoice audit would automatically be an integral
prerequisite for the supply chain to be completely
automated.
Ability to audit a freight quote in real-time, ensure
that the freight is correctly billed as soon as the
carrier site changes, full verification payment, and
even run a second check to ensure accuracy later.
It is a performance model that is highly required
by the supply chain to survive and keep costs
under control.
While the advancements in technology primarily revolve
around the automation of freight invoice audit, the
possible use cases for audit to benefit the supply chain
continue to grow. Invoice audit is no longer just a market
differentiator; it must become the standard to maintain
cost control of freight expenditure.

9. The Freight Audit process involves information flow between multiple stakeholders
It becomes crucial to have smooth work handoffs between humans and bot stakeholders involved in
this process to run it efficiently and accurately. It is also necessary to ensure that the audit trail of the
workflow is maintained, and SLAs are adhered to by these stakeholders.
This is where technologies such as Enate’s Robotic Process Orchestration (RPO) puts forward process
efficiencies.
RPO is a Lite Workflow, BPM, and Work Management platform that acts as a common thread to bind
together all human team members &/or automation technologies into one framework. It features
cutting edge case management, ticket management, email management, and workforce management
capabilities in a single stack, that is light & fast to deploy, and brings in instant governance & control.
If you have implemented automation technologies (RPA, OCR, AI/ML, etc.) into your operations, Enate
will help your automation program by ensuring better human-bot collaboration, governance, and
integration and ensure the end-to-end customer journey is automated.

Errors
Dealing with Duplicate invoices remain a common problem,
sometimes sent by vendors by mistake or in certain cases with
an intent to defraud. These invoices if not identified will result in
huge loses. Automation can detect duplicate invoices at the early
stage and raise an alert and also do a risk assessment for vendors
based on how often these kinds of issues are happening either
intentionally or otherwise.

11. HOW INTELLIGENT AUTOMATION CAN
DRIVE VALUE IN FREIGHT AUDIT
Managing your organization’s transportation costs in today’s competitive environment is critical to controlling the impact on profitability. Adopting Intelligent Automation across
the Freight Audit value chain can bring about consistency and accuracy across the following areas:
Automatic Audit of 100% of
spend, not fraction, flag high
risk items for manual review
Ensure that any accessorial services (Services rendered by carriers in addition to transportation like
crating, packing, and handling; storage, etc.) were actually received and any discounts applied.
Validate invoices against
contract terms, use semantic
analysis to understand
business context; trained
ML models to look for
discrepancies and
noncompliant invoices
Eliminate fake invoices,
vendor impersonation
and shell companies,
unscrupulous practices
Duplicate invoicesDouble

Accessorial
The base rate ensure that the bill begins with the accurate rate, whether it’s a negotiated or spot
market rate.
Base Rate
Ensure that freight is assigned to its appropriate National Motor Freight Classification and charged
appropriately. Misclassification can lead to millions in overcharges.
Classification
Ensure all state and local taxes, and the customs fees, tariffs, and international taxes are applied as
suitable.
Taxes/Fees
RPA can validate invoices against contract terms for discounts, keep track of purchase volumes, flag an
invoice for review when it does not comply with the price for the current volume
Volume Discounts
CORRECTNESS OF CHARGES AND
CLASSIFICATION
12. “The cost of manual
freight invoice processing
is estimated to be in the
range of $15 - $50 per
invoice. Document handling
constitutes the bulk of that
cost, and when an error
is detected, that cost can
increase dramatically.”
“Statistically, 15 percent of
all carrier invoices are
incorrect, and roughly
80 percent of logistics
companies overpay
for freight services.”
13. FREIGHT AUDIT AUTOMATION
IMPROVES COMMUNICATION,
BOTH INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY
An automated system driven by concepts of AI, ML and cognitive intelligence provides centralized
information that can be accessed by all departments, improving internal communication, and
facilitating collaboration across the enterprise through a single source of truth. This eliminates
internal informational silos and guarantees that all departments are looking at a single source of
truth in terms of synchronized and seamless data.
Externally, communication is improved because stakeholders can access accurate data in realtime,
affording them the ability to deal with problems as they arise, rather than waiting weeks or
more for them to surface.
Automation can reduce the human dependency, reduce errors, and lets the
team focus more on other core business. Decision on whether this is done inhouse
or outsourced to vendors who are experts in this area is also key.
While it may not be possible to achieve 100% automation owing to key
human judgements to be taken, a balanced approach of automation and
manual audit would be one of the right approaches.
Companies overpay for shipping not because carriers are dishonest but because
high-volume, global shipping operations generate too much data for manual
processes to absorb. The number of carrier invoices, the level of detail on each
invoice, and the variance in charges, rates, services and billing practices create
an impossible task to manage without automation.
“The larger the shipping volume, the higher the potential is
for billing errors. So even with very competent staff, money
continues to go out the door. It’s primarily when you move
all this data through a single freight audit and payment
application that you discover how much you’re overpaying
and why” - IBM
