Exploring Behavior in Action
I Know She's Smart and Accomplished … But Does She Have
“Personality”?
Answer “true” or “false” to the following questions:
It's maddening when the court lets guilty criminals go free.
Slow people irritate me.
I can easily cheer up and forget my problems.
I am tidy.
I am not polite when I don't want to be.
I would like the job of a race car driver.
My teachers were unfair to me in school.
I like to meet new people.
The way you answer these questions, or similar items, could determine whether you get the job or not.
These questions are examples of the types found on personality tests commonly used to hire people
for jobs. One survey found that over 80 percent of employers reported using some form of personality
test when hiring employees. Another survey found that 29 percent of adults aged 18 to 24 took a
personality test in the past two years in order to be considered for a job. One of the largest testing
companies, Unicru (now a part of Kronos), tested over 11 million candidates in one year for companies
such as Universal Studios. Personality testing has taken the employment field by storm. Employers are
no longer relying only on stellar resumes and amazing experience; they also care about whether an
applicant has the right temperament to carry out the job and fit in with the organization. “Although
personality-based testing has been around for years, it's now in the spotlight,” said Bill Byham, CEO of
Development Dimensions International, a consulting firm that is a leader in the personality testing field.

So, what are the right answers? That depends on what the employer is looking for. Common things
that employers look for are conscientiousness, ability to handle stress, ability to get along with others,
potential leadership, problem-solving style, and service orientation. Different employers look for
different personality profiles, and often it depends on the job being sought.
For example, Karen Schoch, who hires employees for Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island,
states, “A person must be quali.

6 soft skills everyone needs and employers look for
Technical skills may get you an interview, but these six soft skills will get you the job.
By Larry Buhl
In a 2008 survey of more than 2,000 businesses in the state of Washington, employers said entry-level
workers in a variety of professions were lacking in several areas, including problem solving, conflict resolution
and critical observation.
You'll likely see these "soft skills" popping up in job descriptions, next to demands for technical qualifications.
Employment experts agree that tech skills may get you an interview, but these soft skills will get you the job—
and help you keep it:
Communication skills
This doesn't mean you have to be a brilliant orator or writer. It does mean you have to express yourself well,
whether it's writing a coherent memo, persuading others with a presentation or just being able to calmly explain
to a team member what you need.
Teamwork and collaboration
Employers want employees who play well with others—who can effectively work as part of a team. "That
means sometimes being a leader, sometimes being a good follower, monitoring the progress, meeting
deadlines and working with others across the organization to achieve a common goal," says Lynne Sarikas,
the MBA Career Center Director at Northeastern University.
Adaptability
This is especially important for more-seasoned professionals to demonstrate, to counter the (often erroneous)
opinion that older workers are too set in their ways. "To succeed in most organizations, you need to have a
passion for learning and the ability to continue to grow and stretch your skills to adapt to the changing needs of
the organization," Sarikas says. "On your resume, on your cover letter and in your interview, explain the ways
you've continued to learn and grow throughout your career."
Problem solving
Be prepared for the "how did you solve a problem?" interview question with several examples, advises Ann

Kailash Shahani in Interview with Rediff
1. Kailash Shahani Shares on Rediff
Interview the Positive As Well As
Negative Effects Of Social Media
Profiles on the Employers
"Defamatory remarks on social media sites can cost
oneself his job" - Kailash Shahani
Racist remarks are random outbursts that are independent
opinions of a certain individual or group. These remarks never
present you in good light.
Kailash Shahani, Managing Director of Morpheus
Consulting expresses as how a leading company denied a
promising candidate a job when they stumbled upon some racist
comments he'd made during the 2011 cricket world cup.
"The candidate probably wasn't even aware that his activities
were being screened. But a third party organisation that was
involved with background checks scanned his profile and made
a note of these remarks. That worked against him," he recollects,
"And to think that it wasn't even a very senior position!"
Exercising caution, Shahani says, is crucial, adding that it is
pertinent to avoid being an 'extremist by opinion'. "You should
be extremely careful about what you say or post on a public
forum. Try to maintain objectivity of thought, while you are
online."
"Do not post comments or messages about a person, group or
community unless you are attributing it to a source (like a
newspaper or website). In dire cases, a defamation suit could be
filed against you."
"In extreme cases, when you are provoked to voice an
independent opinion, use personal messaging or chats to convey
your message."
2. “Adding Social Causes in your profile can be
advantageous” – Kailash Shahani @ Rediff Interview
Adding activity links about social causes and projects add
impetus to your profile. Even if you do not participate in these
activities, even a gesture expressing interest could work wonders
for you.
Kailash Shahani shares a personal example. "A friend had
applied for a position at a prominent private. The bank had
hired a third party to do a background check of the candidates."
"At that point, the friend was unaware that the bank strongly
believed in corporate social responsibility and did not highlight
the social causes he was actively involved in."
"Since my friend was also part of an NGO (Non-Government
Organization), he had posted some links and images about their
activities, which added value to his profile and left a positive
impression. He learnt about this advantage only after he got the
job. So, little things like these could also count as it portrays
your socially responsible side as well."
3. Kailash Shahani’ opt solution for maintaining both the
profiles – “social as well as professional”
Everyone is not successful to balance an active social profile and
a discreet professional profile. So, does maintaining the two
different profiles can be considered as the solution?
You can always be wise in choosing the people you trust or be
careful to balance your social and professional life. Today, social
networking sites also provide you various privacy options that
you can use to your advantage. However, if you follow the basic
rules, you won't even need to take so much trouble. A lot of
individuals, particularly, those involved at senior management
positions have been successfully doing it."
Kailash Shahani also added with this "The only pictures you see
on their profile are those with family or attending meetings,
conferences, office events, travel and the like. I guess that
wisdom also comes with age and experience. Others can only
learn along the way."
