When Minnesota Heart merged with University of Minnesota Physicians, Rebecca Stepan was hired to manage quality and grow a quality team across the new cardiovascular service line. She spent the first six months focusing on integrating the academic medical center and community hospital cultures. They first prioritized patient access and satisfaction by standardizing transfers of care. Lean Six Sigma tools like value stream maps were used to identify waste in patient journeys and improve processes. Key organizational changes included establishing cross-functional PEAK teams with autonomy to design quality improvements. The most important lesson was that spending time on cultural integration was necessary before implementing strategies to achieve sustained outcomes improvements over 18 months.
