Michael wanted to decorate the stairwell of the music studio with a timeline of influential musicians. The assistant created portrait drawings of Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra in different styles to represent the 1950s-1960s. They experimented with different compositions combining the portraits with sheet music and received feedback from Michael on which designs and styles best fit his vision. The final design arranged the portraits along an ascending sheet music ribbon in a way that aligned with Michael's goals for decorating the space.

Redesigning the music studio. becky bond
- 2. THE BRIEF The music students were asked to generate some ideas of how they would decorate their working space. I was paired with Michael who wanted a timeline / family tree with portraits of musicians ranging from around the 20s up to the 00s. His area to decorate is the stairwell. It provides good light, lots of white wall space.
- 3. I started by choosing Billie Holliday to draw. She was prominent through the 50s and 60s, and is still beloved to this day. the design has to be made to suit the vinyl material it will be cut out from. With this in mind, I decided to draw in a single line style. This was also in part due to Michael showing me some art styles he liked.
- 4. I also drew Frank Sinatra to sum up the 50s/60s. I found lists of best selling artists from the decades and they helped inform my choices. I then reconsidered the materials it would be made from and designed a new style through trial and error which I thought would work well with vinyl of 2-3 different colours. I redrew Billie in this style. Then, I sent them to Michael to check if he liked the styles, which one best and if he liked my choices of artist.
- 5. I started to play around with composition, combining a sheet music blank with the portraits. We had both discussed whether the portraits should stand alone or interact with the lines. I liked the idea of combining them.
- 8. I began testing some ways to create the sheet music ribbons. The first one was created using the pen tool then adjusting individual points as I created each new line. The second, I began adjusting widths separately to create the illusion of 3D. The third, I used the 2 outermost ribbons and then used the blend tool set to specified steps – 3. I sent all 3 of these to Michael to ask which best fit his vision.
- 9. I arranged the portraits so they would line up with an ascending sheet music
- 11. It was nice to be given the opportunity to make something with somebody else in charge of where the design was going. It emphasised the need for strong communication skills and taking and giving criticism. The outcome matches Michael’s vision well.
