Earlier today, the British
Governement issued an alert,
warning its citizens of a high
level terror threat in South
Africa.
This comes after the US issued
a similar warning on 4 June,
after it had received information
that terrorist groups are planning
to carry out attacks against
locations where US-citizens
congregate, such as shopping
malls in Johannesburg and Cape
Town.

The Department of Environmental
Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa has sent
a senior official from Working on Fire
(WoF), Trevor Abraham, to help resolve
a dispute over salaries with striking
firefighters in Canada.
The 301 firefighters were deployed to
Canada to assist with firefighting efforts
in Northern Alberta.
The firefighters were deployed on 29
May and downed their tools last week
Thursday over alleged disputes over
salaries.
Media reports suggest that the
firefighters heard that they were being
paid way less than their Canadian
counterparts were being paid.
On 10 June, Working on Fire released
a statement which highlighted that the
firefighters knew and agreed on salaries
that they were to be paid. “We always
agree with our firefighters when going
on deployments of this nature and in this
instance, formal contracts were signed.”
The South African Municipal
Workers’ Union (Samwu) has also
issued a statement and said it fully
supports the work stoppage by the
firefighters. “We commend these
workers for having taken a strong and
decisive stance against their employer’s
exploitation,” read the statement.
The Department of Environmental
Affairs has committed to continue
engaging directly with the implementing
agent, WoF personnel and with the
Canadian government on the conditions
under which South African firefighters
are deployed both now and in future.

DWELLER DILEMMAAs Metro police removed squatters in George
Lea North Park last week, the issue of finding
humane solutions to squatters was raised
PASCALE MICHAEL
pascalem@caxton.co.za
A HEATED debate has ensued between the
bleeding hearts and law enforcers about
George Lea North Park on 9 June.
The issue of the illegal squatters that have
set up their homes in the park was explained
in the Sandton Chronicle article, Tough life in
the shadows, Week ending 10 June 2016.
On 9 June, Metro police staged an
intervention and went into the park to remove
the squatters and dismantle their homes,
although the term ‘home’ can hardly be used
to describe the makeshift structures made of
sticks and dustbin bags.
Metro police spokesperson, Edna
Mamonyane said, “People have to realise
that a park is not an informal settlement
where people can live and this is why Metro
intervened. A park is a place where people
can relax and be a part of nature.
“We cannot allow people to have
permanent homes in these places illegally
– and they all have the option of going to
a homeless shelter. They should not be in
George Lea Park.”
She further explained that the park is not a
suitable place for children to live as a river
runs through the area.
“Imagine if a child crawled into that river
and drowned. It would be so terrible.
“Children deserve better.”
A Sandton resident, who wishes only to
be referred to as Ayesha, said, “Humane
solutions [need to be used to solve the issue
of squatters] and perhaps we should study
how cities within our country and elsewhere
are dealing with homelessness.”
Another Morningside resident, who has
chosen to remain anonymous, said, “My
heart breaks for these people. Children,
elderly and innocent individuals are forced
to live in such terrible conditions. George Lea
is their only home so we should improve on
their living conditions there and not remove
them. Is it humane to force them out?”
The journalist went in search of the Klakafo
family in the park, the family that was
introduced in the aforementioned article.
This family from Lesotho lives in the park. The
journalist tried to locate the structure that was
once their home but it was no longer there.
The journalist eventually found Bonang
Klakafo who said, “My wife and child are in
a homeless shelter in Alexandra but it is only
a temporary place.
There is no space for me there at the shelter
so I don’t know where I will be tonight. I did
not know that this raid would happen so I
didn’t make arrangements to get home to
Lesotho. What am I going to do?”
As the journalist drove away, she witnessed
hoards of the George Lea dwellers carrying
their belongings across the road to a nearby
church in the hope of finding a helping hand.

Displaced individuals faced
with serious health issues

Site remains a sore spot
The community is faced with an issue of
homelessness.
In the Sandton Chronicle Article, Tough
life in the shadows, the story of how George
Lea Park squatters lived was explained.
These dwellers live in harsh conditions and
young, innocent children are among them.
Judith Briggs, the chairperson of the
Rosebank Homeless Association said,
“We are faced with a huge problem as the
community is completely unprepared for
the issue of the homeless. This crisis is not
new and this issue has been going on for
years. At this time of year, the cold makes
the problem worse as many are left in the
freezing outdoors.”
Briggs explained that the shelters are
inadequate and he believes that there are not
enough suitable shelters for the homeless
across Johannesburg. “Homeless shelters
do give preference to South Africans but
they do not turn foreigners away. The truth
is that there are too many people without
homes. And there are huge costs involved,
for example for lighting and water and it is
difficult for non-government organisations
to assist here.”
She said that a big issue is the fact that
many of the homeless are unqualified and
have no paperwork or documents. This
makes it exceptionally difficult for them to
find a job. “Our homeless shelter offers a
‘drop in’ service whereby the homeless can
come past for a warm breakfast and use the
ablution facilities. The shelter also hands out
blankets to the homeless and I encourage
members of the public to donate blankets to
the shelter in our donation box in Rosebank
Mall near the Pick ‘n Pay.”
Ward 102 councillor, David Potter said,
The first defence witness in the
sentencing proceeding of Oscar
Pistorius told the North Gauteng High
Court that the former Paralympian is
not fit to be sent back to jail.
Professor Jonathan Scholtz told
the court that it would be better for
Pistorius to give back in constructive
ways, such as using his skills to
enhance the lives of others.
Scholtz said the former Paralympian
was riddled with remorse for killing
his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The
clinical psychologist also mentioned
that the convicted murderer had signs
of general anxiety disorder, severe
depression and, among other things, is
unable to socialise.
“He becomes upset when he hears
gunfire, even on TV.” The professor
also told the court that Pistorius will
not be able to testify in his sentencing
arguments.
A 25-year-old man from Soweto was
remanded in custody by the Alexandra
Magistrates’ Court for alleged armed
robbery. He will reappear in court on 13
June for a bail application.
The suspect, who was with someone
police were looking for, was alleged to
have robbed a Ram Courier company
van of parcels mid-morning on 25 May
at Morningview Shopping Centre,
Morningside. The suspects allegedly
robbed the van’s crew at gunpoint while
they were unloading parcels. They
forced them to hand over the vehicle’s
keys and forcibly locked them inside
the van before taking six boxes of
unknown contents and driving off in a
VW Golf 5.
The Pikitup garden refuse site on the corner
of William Nicol and Ballyclare drives
has been a thorn in the side of residents’
in recent years, and things seem to be only
getting worse.
A quick drive around
the premises highlights
numerous problems.
Ward 103 councillor
Vincent Earp has been
monitoring the situation.
“The Pikitup site is in
serious disrepair. The boundary walls are
collapsing in certain spots. People can
literally just walk in here at night and take
what they want. Office parks in the area
are complaining that their staff are being
harassed and are too scared to walk past the
site on their way to work.”
Earp added that vagrants have also taken
to sleeping around the site and selling goods
they have scavenged there on the sidewalks.
A worker at the refuse site who wished to
remain anonymous is aware of the problems.
“We have very little security here. People
can come in anytime they want and take
things. Our toilets are also
broken.” The worker added
that he believes vagrants in
the area are responsible for
crime and drug trading in the
area.
Dr Bruce Irvine-Smith,
a veterinarian at Bryanston
Veterinary Hospital is frustrated by the
inaction of the City in dealing with the site.
“The activity of the vagrants outside the site
wall on the corner of Ballyclare Drive and
Hobart [Road] are a serious problem.”
“Drug dealing is going on there. A few
weeks ago at about 10pm two of these

really care for displaced persons? The City
needs to focus on the building of homeless
shelters and more social workers are also
needed to assist.”
Nkosinathi Nkabinde, communications
specialist for the City of Johannesburg said,
“The capex expenditure has gone down
from two million to one million as social
development only needed one million
for the renovations of a homeless shelter
in region B which includes areas such as

The world is full of innovators
and entrepreneurs, but there is a
new world order when it comes to
thinking about philanthropy. Today
we talk of “social entrepreneurs”
and “social innovation” that turns
profits into positive change. Leading
this new world order in South Africa
is The CEO SleepOutTM.
Founded in 2015, The CEO
SleepOutTM brand’s desire is to

and sustainable social impact in
South Africa’s most vulnerable
communities and societies, by
forging relationships with those in
a position of power and influence.
Believing that the “old” system of
raising funds and donations has run
its course, The CEO SleepOutTM
brand aims to create new, mindful
fund-raising, where money is
raised alongside understanding,
empathy and deep insight into
the lives of vulnerable, homeless
South Africans. It wants to give
the “Have Gots” the chance to
experience a short time as “Have

our leaders, to understand there
is no “Us” and “Them” – only a
“We”. The brand offers a chance to

William Nicol to get some care

Willaim Nicol Drive is in trouble and,
according to Ward 102 councillor
David Potter, the collapse of this road
has been inevitable for a while.
In the Sandton Chronicle article,
Drive with caution in Sandton,
published Week ending 27 May, the
predictions of Potter were discussed.
The ward councillor hypothesised that
‘William Nicol at Peter Place will, at
some point, collapse’.
This prediction appears to have
come true as the embankment next to
the road is visibly collapsing.
“The Johannesburg Roads Agency
(JRA) has, at last, given project
priority to the rehabilitation of the
embankments along William Nicol
Drive, close to Peter Place. The
embankment is located at William
Nicol Drive travelling north towards
Peter Place, between the Engen
Service Station and the Jaguar Motor
Vehicle Dealership,” explained Potter.
He further highlighted that his
efforts to solve the problem began
four years ago.
“Since early 2012, I have been
requesting the JRA to give urgency to
the fast-eroding embankments which
pose both a danger to motorists,
pedestrians and cyclists.
“For a number of years, the
embankment has eroded such that
pedestrians have been unable to
traverse north to south and motorists
are put at risk while travelling in
the southbound lane due to the
undermining of the road base.”
Potter added that during the period
of heavy rains in 2013, the agency
‘placed a huge amount of dump rock
along the side embankment and in the
hollow under the road surface to hold
it up’.
Potter said, “Whilst it has taken
some time to get to the construction
stage, motorists, cyclists and
pedestrians will soon breathe a sigh
of relief as the embankments are
going to be rehabilitated. The most
important being the rehabilitation
of walkways on either side of the
embankments. Currently, there is no
space for pedestrians or cyclists to
traverse across the river culvert bridge
along William Nicol Drive at this
location.”
Potter concluded that, as the
councillor of Ward 102, the project is
welcomed. “Motorists should expect
the project to take around four months
to complete with as minimal road
disruptions as possible.
“Where a lane on one or either
side needs to be closed off, sufcient
visible warning will be provided.
Motorists are encouraged to take
caution when travelling in the

location of the construction work.”
In response to these statements,
the road agency’s spokesperson,
Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “Just to
clarify, over the past few years, JRA
has undertaken maintenance to the
sidewalk and embankment which had
collapsed due to erosion from storm
water, however, this was an interim
measure until the embankment
erosion could be permanently
resolved.”
She explained that, according to
the agency, Potter’s aforementioned
statement about pedestrians not being
able to use the embankment and
motorists being at risk is inaccurate.
“At no stage did the erosion place
motorists at risk while travelling
in the southbound lane, nor has the
road base been undermined. Instead,
motorists would be affected by
excessive water on the road during
heavy downpours which is now being
addressed with the construction of
necessary storm water drainage.
“Furthermore, the embankment ll
has been damaged by storm water,
and the embankment is also very steep
with a lack of pedestrian facilities [as]
there was only a narrow, single lane
available to pedestrians previously.”
She stressed that the road agency’s
project, with a budget of R3.8 million,
will address these issues. “This project
includes a reinstatement, gabion
reinforcing of the embankment to
prevent future erosion, and widening
the ll to provide comprehensive
sidewalk infrastructure on William
Nicol Drive between Republic Road
and Peter Place.
“[The] duration of the project is four
months, construction will start as soon
as a contractor has established a site
camp,” added Peters-Scheepers.

Reserve Bank
caught in JSE error
A JSE programming error, in which the
bourse wildly overstated the purchase of
equities by foreigners in May and July,
distorted data used by the South African
Reserve Bank in its interest rate decision last
week.
The JSE said on Sunday that its statistical
data indicating purchases by nonresidents of
domestic shares of R98.1bn between May
and July 22 was an error and should have
reflected an outflow of R36.4bn over the
period.
The Reserve Bank in its monetary policy

last week painted a positive picture of the

FNB customers have been voicing their

The bank says it’s currently working

been recorded, reflecting the incorrect data.
On Monday the Bank was quick to say that
it had taken note of the JSE error.
“The JSE has reassured the Reserve Bank
that steps were being taken to prevent a
reoccurrence,” it said.
The Bank admitted that incorrect data was
quoted in the MPC statement on Thursday,
but said it had not had any bearing on the

However, it can be assumed that the

from the erroneous foreign-buying data

A magical world of dreams
awaits those wanting to
revive their inner child at
the Slava’s Snowshow at
Montecasino’s Teatro on 26
July until 14 August.
The show’s creator is
Russian master clown legend,
Slava Polunin.
The clown is considered
an icon of Russian culture
and his show has brought
joy to millions across the
globe for more than 20 years.
The unique and constantly
evolving comedy has played
in more than 120 cities
including New York, London,
Sydney, Paris, Rome, Hong
Kong, Moscow and Rio de
Janeiro.
“What the audience can
expect from the Snowshow
is a journey into their
childhood... They can expect
a trip into a world of bright
colours, true feelings and
important small details,
details that one only notices
when young,” said Polunin.
He added that each person
would see his or her own
story in the show. “This is
very important to me, as
the most magical aspect of
this show is the intimate
communication with the
audience which, in this case,
is non-verbal with elusive
bres of contact which often
appear between an artist and
spectator during the show.
This very subtle interaction
creates the magic of theatre,”
he said.
The show is set to transport
audiences to dream-like
places such as a bed
becoming a boat in a storm-
tossed sea, a woman wrapped
in cellophane who becomes
owers in a vase, and a
child walking in amazement
inside a bubble, to mention
a few. The nale will see a
letter turn into snowakes
which will whirl around
the auditorium leaving the
audience ankle-deep in snow.
“I love absurd and fantastic
reality and I do not trust the
spoken word, that is what
made me choose clowning.
For me, expression without
words is much more organic
and natural than using words
on stage. Visual language
is much richer, more
personalised and elusive, and
that is why I have not even
thought of using words.”

Partnership with
Mrs SA renewed
Paper recycling
giant, Mpact Limited,
recently announced the
renewal of its current
partnership with the
Mrs South Africa
pageant.
The company will
once again partner
with the glamorous
pageant for the second
year in a row, hailing
the partnership as a
valuable one in teaching
residents about the
importance of recycling.
John Hunt, managing
director of Mpact
Recycling, spoke of the
renewed partnership
and reflected on the
first year as a success
in terms of how the
contribution made by
last year’s finalists
went towards educating
schoolchildren on the
benefits of recycling.
“This year, our
campaign will include
a socio-economic
development element,
where the top 25
contestants will meet
community leaders to
identify needs in their
areas which Mpact will
[in turn] meet if that
area’s recycling targets
are met,” he said. “The
campaign objectives
fit neatly with Mpact’s
own drive to create
awareness in schools
and communities about
recycling.”
Adding to this
was Joanie Johnson,
managing director of
the Mrs SA pageant,
who explained that the
renewed partnership fit
well with the pageant,

someone approaches our car asking for

We walk past the person standing at the

We lock our cars to go for dinner and tell
the car guard ‘thank you’ before walking

The point of this column is not to make
you feel guilty for having, but rather to
make you aware that there are those who
don’t.
While we can’t help everyone we come

others as humans. Just because you are

make them deserve any less respect from
you.

If you have spare blankets, donate them;
if you are willing and able to support

And if you are unable to do that,

Thank you for the article on

There is no authority
regulating polygraphists and
their examinations in SA. There
is a professional body, South
African Professional Polygraph
Association (Sappa), which
polygraphists may join if they
wish.
Sappa has strict guidelines
according to which
polygraphists must operate
to ensure test validity.
The association based its
validity guidelines on that
of the American Polygraph
Association.
For a polygraph examination
to be valid, certain procedures
must be followed to stimulate
examinees psychologically. If
all the procedures are followed,
the minimum duration of an
examination is 90 minutes.
A polygraph examination
conducted in less than 90
minutes is, therefore, invalid
since it is not accurate.
Did you know if you sent
enquiries to most polygraph
companies in South Africa,
they will inform you proudly
that their examinations have a
duration of between 15 and 45
minutes, from start to end? This
is unacceptable on too many
levels.
When a polygraph
examination is not accurate,
innocent people fail their
examinations.
Which means money spent
on an investigation could be
written off as a waste since
the problem will continue and
innocent people may have been
dismissed, becoming victims
themselves. If a person, for
example, worked at a company
for more than 10 years and is
fired because of a breach of trust
where he failed a polygraph
examination, he will not be
hired again by any company
because how is he going to
account for those 10 years on
his CV and the reason for his
dismissal?
I have been in the industry
since 2001 and I know of people
who have been murdered or
committed suicide as a result of
polygraph results.
Most companies have it in
their policies or employment

will be subject to polygraph

Instinctively I knew from the direction of the
smoke that Msawawa, the informal settlement
on the banks of the Klein Jukskei River,
was on fire! The wind was strong and the
fire raced through the settlement destroying
everything in its path.
The fire department had been called
and were soon at the scene, but one of the
tragedies of Msawawa is that there has never
been any planning and the shacks are built
so close to each other that the fire rescue
vehicles could not manage to reach the
middle where the fire was raging.
It has been estimated that close to 2 000
shacks have been destroyed.
How the fire started is not really known,
but as gas cylinders and paraffin stoves were
caught in the blaze, these only worsened the
situation.
The Gift of the Givers, Juda Africa,

The response to this disaster has been

problem which is likely to reoccur?
The Fourways area has grown by leaps and
bounds. Developers and builders have made
their fortunes there – but what about housing
provision for the thousands of workers?
Twenty years ago, Msawawa was a
football field on the banks of the Klein
Jukskei River. It was there before most of
Cedar Lakes [Lifesetyle Estate] was built.
As people moved into the area to find work,
shacks sprung up around this football field.

It actually is very simple, I sent him

The nalists will focus on humanitarian

through the Mrs Africa Foundation with
the main focus on giving back dignity.
Each nalist has to choose a charity that
they will be raising funds for.
Craddock has chosen Dignity Dreams,
an organisation that distributes washable
sanitary towels to underprivileged girls
and women. She will be raising funds
for a minimum of 30 dignity packs
containing a poly cotton drawstring bag,
underwear, absorbent and waterproof
pads, a soiled goods bag and an
instruction sheet available in English,
French and Swahili.
Each dignity pack has a value of about
R200.
“I am connected to a girl’s home
in Kensington called the Salvation
Strathyre. It houses 50 girls and I want to
provide them with enough packs,” said
Craddock.
“I want to make sure the girls all have
packs before they even need them.”
Craddock will be hosting a Dignied
High Tea in October at Killarney Country
Club to raise funds for the dignity packs.
According to the mother of two, the
minimum she has to raise is R6 000.
“I have to raise all the money and
send all packs before the crowning in
November.”
All nalists will be judged on their
social interaction with the public and the
initiatives they take to raise the funds for
various charities.
“The girls don’t have to miss school,
that’s what the problem is.
“They are missing three to four
days because they don’t have proper
facilities, they don’t have proper
sanitary pads.
“Three to four days a month is
hectic for these little girls.”
On winning, Craddock said it
would be a huge honour, a great
commitment, accountability and
responsibility and that she’s
hoping for the best.

Heading to France to
compete in world finals
KIA Motors South Africa concluded the
fifth instalment of its amateur 5-a-side
soccer tournament, KIA Champ into the
Arena, at the Discovery Soccer Park on 28
May.
The winning team claimed the grand
prize of going to compete against multiple
other teams in the Champ into the Arena
World Finals in Bordeaux, France, in the
first week of July.
In conjunction with its global
partnership with Fifa, and as one of the
main sponsors of the 2016 Uefa Euro
2016 in France, KIA Motors South Africa
hosted tournaments in Johannesburg,
Cape Town and Durban, with the top two
teams from each region making it through
to the finals. The six teams vying for
overall glory included KZNConnected
(captained by Donavan Gordon) and
Astro FC (captained by Kyle Davis)
from Durban; Orlando Pirates Football
Club (captained by Conrad Botha) and
OBC Wits (captained by Lee Edwards)
from Johannesburg; and Just Our Style

The North West Flames and the Gauteng
Jaguars both booked their places in the
semifinals of the Brutal Fruit Netball
Premier League recently.
As the competition now shifts to the
Olive Convention Centre in Durban for the
playoffs, both teams will have a break until
the semifinals on 28 May.
The Flames finished top of the log on 17
points following an unbeaten season to this
point, while the Jaguars finished second on
15 points. Their opponents will be decided
in this weekend’s quarterfinals in Durban.
The Flames will face the winner of the
quarterfinal between the Southern Stings
and the Kingdom Stars; while the Jaguars
will take on the winner of the quarterfinal
between the Free State Crinums and the
Gauteng Golden Fireballs.
The coaching duo of Dorette Badenhorst
of the Flames and Jenny van Dyk of the
Jaguars know better than most that now is
when the competition really begins.
“It felt great to go through without losing
a game, but now the real competition
starts. If you lose now you’re out,” said
Badenhorst, who’s team heads into the
playoffs in a confident mood after beating
the Fireballs 65–48.
“I never thought we’d finish this stage
of the competition at the top of the log.
All the teams were really strong and there
wasn’t a single easy game. Even though
there were high scores, it wasn’t as easy as
it might have looked. I didn’t think we’d be
unbeaten, but it’s great because it gives the
players confidence going into the semis.”
Van Dyk’s Jaguars rounded off the first
part of their campaign with a 56–34 win
over the Stars and then a 78–32 victory
over the Limpopo Baobabs. Van Dyk has
welcomed the break for her players as they
prepare for the semifinals.
“I’m very proud of the team. We did
enough the past few weeks to take that
second spot and I’m proud of the character
shown by my players. Now they’ll have a
rest in the next two weeks to get those legs
fresh for the semis.”
The Crinums had a very good weekend,
beating the Southern Stings 32–31 and then
routing the Mpumalanga Sunbirds 71–30 to
head into the quarterfinals with a new spark
to their campaign.
It was a tough defeat for Stings coach
Annelie Lucas who’s team set the early pace
in the competition. “Our loss means we
don’t go straight through to the semifinals,
but on the positive side, we have some more
game time to prepare.”

On 10 June, Working on Fire released a statement which highlighted that the firefighters knew and agreed on salaries that they were to be paid. “We always agree with our firefighters when going on deployments of this nature and in this instance, formal contracts were signed.” The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) has also issued a statement and said it fully supports the work stoppage by the firefighters. “We commend these workers for having taken a strong and decisive stance against their employer’s exploitation,” read the statement. The issue of the illegal squatters that have set up their homes in the park was explained in the Sandton Chronicle article, Tough life in the shadows, Week ending 10 June 2016. On 9 June, Metro police staged an intervention and went into the park to remove the squatters and dismantle their homes, although the term ‘home’ can hardly be used to describe the makeshift structures made of sticks and dustbin bags. Metro police spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane said, “People have to realise that a park is not an informal settlement where people can live and this is why Metro intervened. A park is a place where people can relax and be a part of nature. “We cannot allow people to have permanent homes in these places illegally – and they all have the option of going to a homeless shelter. They should not be in George Lea Park.” She further explained that the park is not a suitable place for children to live as a river runs through the area. “Imagine if a child crawled into that river and drowned. It would be so terrible. “Children deserve better.” A Sandton resident, who wishes only to be referred to as Ayesha, said, “Humane solutions [need to be used to solve the issue of squatters] and perhaps we should study how cities within our country and elsewhere are dealing with homelessness.” Another Morningside resident, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said, “My heart breaks for these people. Children, elderly and innocent individuals are forced to live in such terrible conditions. George Lea is their only home so we should improve on their living conditions there and not remove them. Is it humane to force them out?” The journalist went in search of the Klakafo family in the park, the family that was introduced in the aforementioned article. This family from Lesotho lives in the park. The journalist tried to locate the structure that was once their home but it was no longer there. The journalist eventually found Bonang Klakafo who said, “My wife and child are in a homeless shelter in Alexandra but it is only a temporary place. There is no space for me there at the shelter so I don’t know where I will be tonight. I did not know that this raid would happen so I didn’t make arrangements to get home to Lesotho. What am I going to do?” As the journalist drove away, she witnessed hoards of the George Lea dwellers carrying their belongings across the road to a nearby church in the hope of finding a helping hand. Site remains a sore spot The community is faced with an issue of homelessness. In the Sandton Chronicle Article, Tough life in the shadows, the story of how George Lea Park squatters lived was explained. These dwellers live in harsh conditions and young, innocent children are among them. Judith Briggs, the chairperson of the Rosebank Homeless Association said, “We are faced with a huge problem as the community is completely unprepared for the issue of the homeless. This crisis is not new and this issue has been going on for years. At this time of year, the cold makes the problem worse as many are left in the freezing outdoors.” Briggs explained that the shelters are inadequate and he believes that there are not enough suitable shelters for the homeless across Johannesburg. “Homeless shelters do give preference to South Africans but they do not turn foreigners away. The truth is that there are too many people without homes. And there are huge costs involved, for example for lighting and water and it is difficult for non-government organisations to assist here.” She said that a big issue is the fact that many of the homeless are unqualified and have no paperwork or documents. This makes it exceptionally difficult for them to find a job. “Our homeless shelter offers a ‘drop in’ service whereby the homeless can come past for a warm breakfast and use the ablution facilities. The shelter also hands out blankets to the homeless and I encourage members of the public to donate blankets to the shelter in our donation box in Rosebank Mall near the Pick ‘n Pay.” Ward 102 councillor, David Potter said, The first defence witness in the sentencing proceeding of Oscar Pistorius told the North Gauteng High Court that the former Paralympian is not fit to be sent back to jail. Professor Jonathan Scholtz told the court that it would be better for Pistorius to give back in constructive ways, such as using his skills to enhance the lives of others. Scholtz said the former Paralympian was riddled with remorse for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The clinical psychologist also mentioned that the convicted murderer had signs of general anxiety disorder, severe depression and, among other things, is unable to socialise. “He becomes upset when he hears gunfire, even on TV.” The professor also told the court that Pistorius will not be able to testify in his sentencing arguments. A 25-year-old man from Soweto was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for alleged armed robbery. He will reappear in court on 13 June for a bail application. The suspect, who was with someone police were looking for, was alleged to have robbed a Ram Courier company van of parcels mid-morning on 25 May at Morningview Shopping Centre, Morningside. The suspects allegedly robbed the van’s crew at gunpoint while they were unloading parcels. They forced them to hand over the vehicle’s keys and forcibly locked them inside the van before taking six boxes of unknown contents and driving off in a VW Golf 5. The Pikitup garden refuse site on the corner of William Nicol and Ballyclare drives has been a thorn in the side of residents’ in recent years, and things seem to be only getting worse. A quick drive around the premises highlights numerous problems. Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp has been monitoring the situation. “The Pikitup site is in serious disrepair. The boundary walls are collapsing in certain spots. People can literally just walk in here at night and take what they want. Office parks in the area are complaining that their staff are being harassed and are too scared to walk past the site on their way to work.” Earp added that vagrants have also taken to sleeping around the site and selling goods they have scavenged there on the sidewalks. A worker at the refuse site who wished to remain anonymous is aware of the problems. “We have very little security here. People can come in anytime they want and take things. Our toilets are also broken.” The worker added that he believes vagrants in the area are responsible for crime and drug trading in the area. Dr Bruce Irvine-Smith, a veterinarian at Bryanston Veterinary Hospital is frustrated by the inaction of the City in dealing with the site. “The activity of the vagrants outside the site wall on the corner of Ballyclare Drive and Hobart [Road] are a serious problem.” “Drug dealing is going on there. With the reduction of budget, it begs the question, does the City really care for displaced persons? The City needs to focus on the building of homeless shelters and more social workers are also needed to assist.” Nkosinathi Nkabinde, communications specialist for the City of Johannesburg said, “The capex expenditure has gone down from two million to one million as social development only needed one million for the renovations of a homeless shelter in region B which includes areas such as Mayfair, Aukland Park and Randburg. Today we talk of “social entrepreneurs” and “social innovation” that turns profits into positive change. Leading this new world order in South Africa is The CEO SleepOutTM. Founded in 2015, The CEO SleepOutTM brand’s desire is to create a force for positive change and sustainable social impact in South Africa’s most vulnerable communities and societies, by forging relationships with those in a position of power and influence. William Nicol to get some care Pascale Michael pascalem@caxton.co.za Willaim Nicol Drive is in trouble and, according to Ward 102 councillor David Potter, the collapse of this road has been inevitable for a while. In the Sandton Chronicle article, Drive with caution in Sandton, published Week ending 27 May, the predictions of Potter were discussed. The ward councillor hypothesised that ‘William Nicol at Peter Place will, at some point, collapse’. This prediction appears to have come true as the embankment next to the road is visibly collapsing. “The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has, at last, given project priority to the rehabilitation of the embankments along William Nicol Drive, close to Peter Place. The embankment is located at William Nicol Drive travelling north towards Peter Place, between the Engen Service Station and the Jaguar Motor Vehicle Dealership,” explained Potter. He further highlighted that his efforts to solve the problem began four years ago. “Since early 2012, I have been requesting the JRA to give urgency to the fast-eroding embankments which pose both a danger to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. “For a number of years, the embankment has eroded such that pedestrians have been unable to traverse north to south and motorists are put at risk while travelling in the southbound lane due to the undermining of the road base.” Potter added that during the period of heavy rains in 2013, the agency ‘placed a huge amount of dump rock along the side embankment and in the hollow under the road surface to hold it up’. Potter said, “Whilst it has taken some time to get to the construction stage, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will soon breathe a sigh of relief as the embankments are going to be rehabilitated. The most important being the rehabilitation of walkways on either side of the embankments. Currently, there is no space for pedestrians or cyclists to traverse across the river culvert bridge along William Nicol Drive at this location.” Potter concluded that, as the councillor of Ward 102, the project is welcomed. “Motorists should expect the project to take around four months to complete with as minimal road disruptions as possible. “Where a lane on one or either side needs to be closed off, sufcient visible warning will be provided. Motorists are encouraged to take caution when travelling in the ‘For a number of years, the embankment has eroded such that pedestrians have been unable to traverse’ Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp and Ward 102 councillor David Potter are worried about the safety of pedestrians and motorists. Instead, motorists would be affected by excessive water on the road during heavy downpours which is now being addressed with the construction of necessary storm water drainage. “Furthermore, the embankment ll has been damaged by storm water, and the embankment is also very steep with a lack of pedestrian facilities [as] there was only a narrow, single lane available to pedestrians previously.” She stressed that the road agency’s project, with a budget of R3.8 million, will address these issues. “This project includes a reinstatement, gabion reinforcing of the embankment to prevent future erosion, and widening the ll to provide comprehensive sidewalk infrastructure on William Nicol Drive between Republic Road and Peter Place. “[The] duration of the project is four months, construction will start as soon as a contractor has established a site camp,” added Peters-Scheepers. On Monday the Bank was quick to say that it had taken note of the JSE error. “The JSE has reassured the Reserve Bank that steps were being taken to prevent a reoccurrence,” it said. The Bank admitted that incorrect data was quoted in the MPC statement on Thursday, but said it had not had any bearing on the committee’s decision not to hike rates. However, it can be assumed that the Bank’s positive views on the rand resulting from the erroneous foreign-buying data would have been incorporated in its models. For a polygraph examination to be valid, certain procedures must be followed to stimulate examinees psychologically. If all the procedures are followed, the minimum duration of an examination is 90 minutes. A polygraph examination conducted in less than 90 minutes is, therefore, invalid since it is not accurate. Did you know if you sent enquiries to most polygraph companies in South Africa, they will inform you proudly that their examinations have a duration of between 15 and 45 minutes, from start to end? This is unacceptable on too many levels. When a polygraph examination is not accurate, innocent people fail their examinations. Which means money spent on an investigation could be written off as a waste since the problem will continue and innocent people may have been dismissed, becoming victims themselves. If a person, for example, worked at a company for more than 10 years and is fired because of a breach of trust where he failed a polygraph examination, he will not be hired again by any company because how is he going to account for those 10 years on his CV and the reason for his dismissal? The wind was strong and the fire raced through the settlement destroying everything in its path. The fire department had been called and were soon at the scene, but one of the tragedies of Msawawa is that there has never been any planning and the shacks are built so close to each other that the fire rescue vehicles could not manage to reach the middle where the fire was raging. It has been estimated that close to 2 000 shacks have been destroyed. The event was to show guests how to bring out the best in their food as Hellmann’s took to the stage to introduce the curious guests to their #RockYourBurger truck. The truck generated an amped-up burger experience for guests as it included personalised burger buns, a digital rock star name generator and an electrifying miniature burger stage. Guests were also intrigued by what looked Sheila Makhoba with her daughter, Nolwezi. Micaela and Liyah Wilson with Christian van Boomen, Tammy Wilson and Richard Rachidi have fun at the #RockYourBurger event. Cameron Krieger, Russel Smith and Clive Rowlett have a blast at Hellmann’s. The day also included a lighthearted battle of the Charity Challenge Burger which saw three celebrity-media teams, each led by three South African food lovers, battling it out over the grills. The three teams included Rolling Buns, Food Fighters and the Ramayones, who were pitted against each other to design, create and plate their most rocking burgers for a cause. The best burger was voted by Twitter supporters as team Food Fighters. The team comprised TV and radio personality, Roxy Burger; blogger of Glam Foodie, Charmaine Ramalope; and food editor of Fresh Living magazine, Jana van Sittert. The Food Fighter’s burger was sold throughout the event alongside the Hellmann’s Classic Burger and Hellmann’s Cheese Burger. Proceeds from the sale of the Charity Challenge Burger will be donated to the Outreach Foundation, a Hillbrow-based community project which offers support and development in the arts to uplift the lives of the youth in the local community. The truck and its amped-up burger experience will be travelling to music festivals, markets, foodie events and street fairs around the country for the next 12 months and passionate food fanatics keen to get a bite out of the action can track its movements on the Hellmann’s online and social platforms. 12 Sandton Chronicle 30•05•2016My School Topic: Teachers are not allowed to give you a hiding, this is what kids at Sandton Primary had to say about how they think they need to be ourschool They should let us sit detension for not doing homework. FREEwww.sandtonchronicle.co.za Week ending 22 April, 2016 Heading to France to compete in world finals KIA Motors South Africa concluded the fifth instalment of its amateur 5-a-side soccer tournament, KIA Champ into the Arena, at the Discovery Soccer Park on 28 May. The winning team claimed the grand prize of going to compete against multiple other teams in the Champ into the Arena World Finals in Bordeaux, France, in the first week of July. In conjunction with its global partnership with Fifa, and as one of the main sponsors of the 2016 Uefa Euro 2016 in France, KIA Motors South Africa hosted tournaments in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, with the top two teams from each region making it through to the finals. The six teams vying for overall glory included KZNConnected (captained by Donavan Gordon) and Astro FC (captained by Kyle Davis) from Durban; Orlando Pirates Football Club (captained by Conrad Botha) and OBC Wits (captained by Lee Edwards) from Johannesburg; and Just Our Style (captained by Nolan Wagenaar) and UnTouchables (captained by Allie Logday) from Cape Town. The semi-finals was a closely contested The North West Flames and the Gauteng Jaguars both booked their places in the semifinals of the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League recently. As the competition now shifts to the Olive Convention Centre in Durban for the playoffs, both teams will have a break until the semifinals on 28 May. The Flames finished top of the log on 17 points following an unbeaten season to this point, while the Jaguars finished second on 15 points. Their opponents will be decided in this weekend’s quarterfinals in Durban. The Flames will face the winner of the quarterfinal between the Southern Stings and the Kingdom Stars; while the Jaguars will take on the winner of the quarterfinal between the Free State Crinums and the Gauteng Golden Fireballs. The coaching duo of Dorette Badenhorst of the Flames and Jenny van Dyk of the Jaguars know better than most that now is when the competition really begins. “It felt great to go through without losing a game, but now the real competition starts. If you lose now you’re out,” said Badenhorst, who’s team heads into the playoffs in a confident mood after beating the Fireballs 65–48. “I never thought we’d finish this stage of the competition at the top of the log. All the teams were really strong and there wasn’t a single easy game. Even though there were high scores, it wasn’t as easy as it might have looked. I didn’t think we’d be unbeaten, but it’s great because it gives the players confidence going into the semis.” Van Dyk’s Jaguars rounded off the first part of their campaign with a 56–34 win over the Stars and then a 78–32 victory over the Limpopo Baobabs. Van Dyk has welcomed the break for her players as they prepare for the semifinals. “I’m very proud of the team. We did enough the past few weeks to take that second spot and I’m proud of the character shown by my players. Now they’ll have a rest in the next two weeks to get those legs fresh for the semis.” The Crinums had a very good weekend, beating the Southern Stings 32–31 and then routing the Mpumalanga Sunbirds 71–30 to head into the quarterfinals with a new spark to their campaign. It was a tough defeat for Stings coach Annelie Lucas who’s team set the early pace in the competition. “Our loss means we don’t go straight through to the semifinals, but on the positive side, we have some more game time to prepare.” “I never thought we’d finish this stage of the competition at the top of the log.
