It is noted that shelters are inadequate and many homeless individuals, including children, are left without proper housing. Stakeholders call for more resources and support to be dedicated to assisting the homeless population in the area.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
AI Trends in Creative Operations 2024 by Artwork Flow.pdfmarketingartwork
Creative operations teams expect increased AI use in 2024. Currently, over half of tasks are not AI-enabled, but this is expected to decrease in the coming year. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.
Organizational culture includes values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits that influence employee behaviors and how people interpret those behaviors. It is important because culture can help or hinder a company's success. Some key aspects of Netflix's culture that help it achieve results include hiring smartly so every position has stars, focusing on attitude over just aptitude, and having a strict policy against peacocks, whiners, and jerks.

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

Drie verdagtes
word gefnuik
Drie verdagtes het hulle op 28 Junie teen
die lang arm van die gereg vasgeloop.
Die verkeersafdeling het vroegoggend ’n
wit Volkswagen Golf in Impalastraat gesien
en onraad vermoed.
Hulle het die voertuig afgetrek en drie
mans het uitgespring en is kort daarna by
’n spruitjie in hegtenis geneem.
Mnr.

waar niks fout was nie.
Daarna is chaos in Oribistraat aangetref
waar die diefwering en agterdeur
oopgebreek is terwyl niemand by die huis
was nie.
Nog bewysstukke is in Sakhile
opgespoor.
Volgens mnr.
Me. Joey Groenewald van Dassiestraat
het Dwayne en sy kollega van die
verkeersafdeling bedank, sowel as mnr.

aangetref.
Die verdagte is na die Standerton
Polisiestasie geneem.
Die handsak is later opgespoor, maar die
vrou het aangevoer dat haar selfoon wat
binne-in was, verdwyn het.
Die verdagte het by ondervraging ontken

Two aspiring veterinarians visited the
Standerton Veterinary Hospital on 24 June.
Both Thoko Dhlamini and Dudu Ncala
of Nqondulwazi Secondary School in
Morgenzon, said their visit to the hospital
was interesting and informative.
They also said they have never met a
veterinarian before.
According to them, their love for
animals has motivated them to choose to
pursue this career.
These Grade 12 pupils admitted that
their parents found it hard to accept their
choice.
“When I told my mother what I want to
do after completing my matric, she was
not happy.
“However, she now understands why I
want to be a veterinarian after I explained
to her how much I love animals,” Dudu
Khumalo said.
Dudu Ncala echoed the same
sentiments, saying her mother was worried
that she will study and not get employed
afterwards.
These youngsters are also pets owners,
Dhlamini has two cats and Ncala has two
dogs.
They encouraged the public to take care
of animals.
“If you can not take care of an animal,
rather take it to an organisation such as the
SPCA,” Ncala said.
They also condemned the killing
of animals such as rhinos, saying it is
everyone’s responsibility to ensure that
endangered species do not get extinct.
“Some animals, that we only read about
now, were alive many years ago, let us
prevent that from happening again,” Dudu
said.

Toyota Knights continue to donate
The Toyota Knights have been hard at
work making a positive contribution in the
community.
After raising funds selling boerewors
rolls at the Standerton Superspar parking,
they were able to buy useful equipment for
the SPCA.
They delivered the equipment on 28 June.
These include washing basins, blankets,
medicine and supplements.
The Toyota Knights thanked the
community, Superspar and TWK Toyota for
their support.
They also donated beads to the Standerton
Specialised TB Hospital on the same day.
The patients at the hospital do bead work
as part of their therapy.

Kasselman Security Services has partnered
with AfriForum to cover more potholes in
town.
AfriForum began a project of covering
potholes a couple of months ago.
Many motorists appreciated what they
were doing, saying they will drive better on
the roads.
The Civic Voice thanked AfriForum,
saying they are doing what the Lekwa
Municipality failed to do.
According to Mr Jannie Kasselman, they
appointed labourers and AfriForum provides
the material used to ll the holes.
“Something needed to be done, our
vehicles were getting damaged,” Mr
Kasselman said.
According to Mr Hillel Coetzer of
AfriForum, any initiative at this moment is
helpful due to the municipality not fullling
their duties.
“The community needs to work together
so that we can improve Standerton and
attract investors to our town,” Mr Coetzer
said.

Melanie Vosloo klim
haar loopbaanleer
Melanie Vosloo deins nie terug vir
uitdagings wat harde werk behels nie.
Die enkelouer van ’n tienerdogter,
Brümilda, het onlangs akkreditasie by die
Suid-Afrikaanse Rekenkunde Akademie
ontvang.
Melanie werk onafhanklik as
rekenkundige klerk by Quantum Energy
en het ook ’n diplomakursus vir BBBEE
(Black Broad-Based Employment Equity)
voltooi.
kwaliseer.
“As Brümilda klaar is met haar
huiswerk, skuif ek agter die boeke in.”
Haar ma, Karen Vosloo, het haar
syferaanleg reeds vroeg raakgesien toe
nommerplaatnommers kon memoriseer.
In haar matriekjaar as 17-jarige by
Pravin Gordhan se begrotingstoespraak by
te woon en van die vernaamste rolspelers
in die ekonomie in lewende lywe te
ontmoet.
“Dit was ’n wonderlike ervaring.”
Die ekonomiese vooruitsigte in Suid-
Afrika soos op televisie en in koerante
aangedui, is vir haar geen verrassing nie.
“Dit is ’n werklikheid.”
Melanie se kop staan ook kansel
toe en sy gaan binnekort met die
vliegtuigingenieur, Werner Pieterse,
afhaak.
Dié paartjie deel ’n belangstelling in
Perdry, waarin haar dogter so uitblink,
is ’n ander belangstelling.

Mkize receives green number
50-year-old Boy Mkize recently received
his green number during the recent
Comrades Marathon.
After taking a break from the race
between 2009 and 2014, this athlete came
back even stronger.
“I never stopped training even when
I was not competing in the Comrades
Marathon,” Mkize said.
He has always been active and used
to play soccer, but stopped because of
injuries.
“I took up running because I wanted
to continue exercising even after quitting
soccer.”
He became interested in the Comrades
Marathon when two of his colleagues were
participating in the competition.
“My rst comrades in 1999 was very
hard, it was nothing like the other races I
had run before,” Mkize said.
However, it only got
better with time.
According to him,
his best race ever was

As a member of the Standerton Marathon
Club he has a number which he uses in all
the races he runs.
According to him, they only pay R250
once a year and the club also contributes
nancially to athletes competing in the
Comrades Marathon.
Mkize enjoys watching soccer and going
to church.
“I am a rm believer in God, the giver of

HOëVELD - Dis strooptyd en oral
oor die Hoëveld slaan boere hand
aan die ploeg om die werk gedoen
te kry.
Maar vir die gewone persoon op
straat wat behels graanverbouing
en hoe werk die proses?
Mnr. Danie Hamman, ’n
bestuurder van ’n plaas naby
Ermelo, het gewys dat die
belangrikheid van landbou nie
oorbeklemtoon kan word nie.
Van plantseisoen af werk die
boere daaraan om aan verbruikers
’n verskeidenheid produkte op die
rak te bring.
Die regte kultivarkeuse speel ’n
groot rol tydens die verbouing van
mielies asook ander graansoorte.
Mielies word in twee
afdelings geklassiseer, naamlik
GGO’s en Nie-GGO’s wat dui
op geometriese gewysigde
organisme, al dan nie.
GGO’s is wanneer ’n graansoort
biologies gemanipuleer word om
byvoorbeeld bestand te wees teen
sekere siektes.
Nie-GGO’s is wanneer die
produk glad nie gemanipuleer
word nie.
“Elke boer het sy eie voorkeure
in die tipe mielie, hetsy geel of
wit, wat hy verbou,” het mnr.
Hamman gesê.
Hy plant egter wit Nie-
GGO-mielies en werk op ’n
wisselboustelsel.
Hulle plant dus 50 persent
mielies en 50 persent sojabone en
wissel dan jaarliks die lande uit.
“Sommige boere wissel ook die
lande oor ’n driejaartydperk,” het
hy gesê.
Die grond waarin geplant
word, word voor die plantseisoen
ontleed en soms word daar ook
geproefplant om te sien watter
kultivar die beste vaar.

jaarliks.
“Dit is dus nodig vir boere om
aan te pas by dié verandering.”
Mielies mag nie ’n
vogpersentasie van 13 persent
of hoër hê wanneer dit by die
silo’s aangebring word nie, omdat
dit swamsiektes kan ontwikkel
tydens die opberging.
Mnr.
By sommige silo’s kan mielies
in droogoonde na ’n aanvaarbare
vogpersentasie verdroog word,
maar mnr. Hamman het gesê
dat weinig bereid is om vir dié
behandeling te betaal.
Tydens die groeiproses is
mielies vatbaar vir verskeie
siektes soos wortelvrot,
streepsiekte, grysblaarvlek, roes,
kopvrot en kop- en pluimbrand.
Verskeie ander negetiewe
aspekte moet ook ingereken
word.
Saaiboere hou soms vee ook
aan en wanneer dié diere die
lande invaar, rig hul skade aan.
Mnr. Hamman weet hiervan
siende hy werkers moes kry om
mielies wat nie deur die stroper
opgetel kon word nie, op te tel.
Hy het ook gesê dat ystervarke
en bosvarke net soveel skade kan
aanrig.
“Boere in die Hoëveld
ondervind dat bosvarke meer
algemeen voorkom.”
Die stroper beweeg deur die
lande en wanneer sy bak vol is,
word die mielies in ’n tapkar
oorgelaai wat op sy beurt weer in
’n vervoerwa oorlaai waarna die
mielies na die silo’s geneem word
vir gradering.
’n Proefmonster van sowat
10kg word met ’n gewone of
pneumatiese monsternemer
geneem, waartydens
vogpersentasie onder andere
gemeet word.
Die monster word ook deur ’n
graderingssif gegooi en volgens
’n regulasietabel ondersoek.
Die mielie word ook in ’n
skudsif gegooi om te kyk vir
giftige sade soos kankerroos
en olie-boom- graaninsekte,
naamlik kadelak kewer, roesrooi
graankewer of Indiese meelmotte.
Verskillende gewasse mielies
word nie gemeng nie, geel- en wit
mielies word ook nie gemeng nie.
Mielies word eindelik in die
silo’s via vervoerbande na die
hysbakke geneem en lewer die
graan dan in die geselekteerde
buise af.

Wat om te doen as jy in
’n ongeluk betrokke is
Na ’n ongeluk kan jy aan skok ly en
heeltemal deurmekaar wees.
’n Ontleding sal aandui watter
As jy beesmis tot jou beskikking
het, gebruik dit omdat dit die struktuur
van die grond
verbeter, gesonde
groei stimuleer
asook makro- en
mikrovoedingstowwe
bied.
Mis in die grond laat
kool baie makliker
groei.
vinniger groter koppe produseer.
Die algemene reël is om rye 60cm
uitmekaar te spasieer.
In die ry self moet die spasiëring 35cm
wees.
Koppe moet effens uitmekaar gespasieer
kleiner koppe.
groente is LAN.
Tweede toediening: Gewoonlik twee weke
toediening, gebruik 250kg/
ha, twee weke later in die
somer, of drie weke later
in die winter.
Vierde toediening:
’n Vierde
toediening mag
nodig wees
as daar baie
reënval in jou in
gebied is.
Dit mag
oormatig klink, maar
dit is wel die moeite werd.
Sonder voldoende stikstof sal die
opbrengs verlaag, terwyl alle jou ander
uitgawes dieselfde bly.
Plaagbeheer:
bespaar.
Vir plantluise, gebruik APHOX.
Vir ruspes, gebruik Tracer of DiPel omdat
peste is.
Jou saailingprodusent sal jou adviseer oor
onkruiddoder is goed gekalibreer.

Pas die regte insekbeheer doeltreffend toe
Van die LNR-IGG
In Suid-Afrika is sekere insekplae belangrik
word.
Die belangrikste insekplaag van mielies,
is die stamboorders.
In Suid-Afrika bestaan die
stamboorderkompleks uit drie spesies,
naamlik die Afrika-mieliestamboorder
(Busseola fusca), die Chilo-boorder
(Chilo partellus) en die pienk stamboorder
(Sesamia calamistis).
Daar kom twee tot drie duidelik
afgebakende motvlugte per seisoen
vir die Afrika-stamboorder
voor.
Mielieplante word
gewoonlik besmet deur
óf die eerste óf tweede
generasie motvlug,
afhangend van die
plantdatum.
Wyemotte lê
eierpakkies agter die
blaarskede.
Pasuitgebroeide
larwes is donkerbruin
van kleur en word
ligter namate hulle
ouer word.
Pas nadat larwes
uitgebroei het,
migreer hul opwaarts
na die kelk waar hulle
begin voed.
Wanneer die skade
uitgroei, vertoon dit as “venstertjies” op
kelkblare.
Groter larwes vreet regdeur die kelkrol
sodat kelkblare ’n ry gate vertoon as hulle
uitgroei, en staan bekend as “haelkorrel”-
skade.
Indien die groeipunt van die plant
beskadig word, lei dit tot “dooiehart”-
simptome.
seisoen is.
Die Chilo-boorder het ’n kort lewensiklus
wat lei tot grootskaalse oorvleueling van
generasies en ’n aanhoudende toename in
larwale getalle.

gewigtige plaag is.

neem tans ook in die
binneland toe.
Die pienk stamboorder
se motte lê hul eiers
in groepe tussen die
blaarskede en die stam
van die mielieplant,
net soos die Afrika-
stamboorder.
Pienk stamboorder-
larwes kan soms

dié van die Afrika-
stamboorder, maar
die pienkerige kleur
van die larwes asook
die skadesimptome,
maak dit duidelik
onderskeibaar.
Larwes wat onder die blaarskede uitbroei,
penetreer die stam direk, terwyl dié wat
onder skutblare uitbroei, die mieliekop
binnedring.
is ‘n tipiese miswurm.

gaan nie in ’n rustoestand in nie.
Van die belangrikste plae wat saailinge
aanval, is snywurms (Agrotis segetum), die
swartmieliekewer (Heteronychus arator) en
die valsdraadwurm (Somaticus angulatus).
Wat saailinginsekplae so belangrik maak,

Boere ken hierdie kringloop,

Mense reik uit na ’n gesin in

Iewers op ’n strandjie, het
honderde seesterre uitgespoel.
’n Man het een vir een begin

nie dat jy werklik hier ’n verskil
kan maak nie - jy sal nooit al
hierdie seesterre betyds terug in

Die seesterredder het
omgedraai, geglimlag, nog ’n
seesterretjie opgetel en hom
in die water teruggegooi en vir
sy mede-strandloper gesê: “Ek
het vir hierdie een ’n verskil
gemaak.”
Ons kan ’n verskil in mekaar

Soek jou verdorde

UIT DIE PERD SE BEK
It’s important to plan beyond the
drought in a sector that will remain
a driver of economic growth and
social stability.
Agriculture has always been the
backbone of most rural economies.
Mr Nico Groenewald, Head of
Agribusiness SA at Standard Bank,
encourages primary producers to
take a long-term view, rather than
getting caught up in the immediate
crisis of the country’s worst drought
in 80 years.
All of us in agriculture know
that it is a cyclical sector, and
that weather is a fundamental, but
unpredictable, factor for which we
must continuously evolve better
strategies.
Agriculture is also the one sector
that is critical to human survival.
However, partly because of the
weather, and often in spite of it, the
ways of ensuring that people get
good quality, nourishing food are
evolving.
So, if you’re in agriculture,
you’re a contributor to one of the
most profound evolutions to ever
inuence humanity’s future.
This is not just a nancial
consideration; it also has immense
social implications.
It will shift agriculture into
the domain of social investment,
whereby people invest not only
for nancial returns, but also to
ensure that society functions more
equitably as a result of their inputs.
For all sorts of reasons, therefore,
it’s time for farmers to look at
the work they do as a type of
investment vehicle.
New agricultural strategies
are giving rise to new up- and
downstream business opportunities
in which conventional investors can
be persuaded to take a stake.
Farmers can either create the
investment opportunities, or
participate in them.
Regardless, they gain a share
of the value chain that they don’t
currently have.
It also enables them to inuence
the direction in which agriculture
evolves, and how effectively it
serves both farmers and humanity.
For most farmers, with or without
drought conditions, funding
remains a challenge.
Again, the solution lies in looking
at agriculture as an investment
vehicle, rather than as a purely
tactical, operational exercise
undertaken season-on-season.
In an investment scenario, banks
and their relationship managers
and agricultural economists can be
signicant allies.
They can bring more effective
and longer-term funding resources
to bear as agriculture becomes more
globalised.
Since the establishment of
the world’s oldest bank in Italy,
agriculture has owed most of its
operations to loans made available
by banks, on the basis of a statute
regulating agricultural and pastoral
activities in the respective region.
Consequently, modern funding
trends driven largely by technology
and new phenomena, such as
crowd sourcing and crowd funding,
are making other nancing
options available to players in the
agricultural value chain.
Farmers, who want to take the
investment approach, should stick
to the basics of nancing as proven
by banks.
Additionally to actual funding,
banks with agricultural business
units provide ancillary services
that can help farmers achieve a
competitive advantage and mitigate
their risks.
These include access to
specialists focusing on nancial
viability, repayment ability and
appropriate debt restructuring,
agricultural market trend and
information services, agricultural
publications, value chain funding
solutions, and tangible support of
organised agriculture.
Banks are in the business
of creating wealth through
entrepreneurs who invest in
themselves and the future.
We believe it’s time for farmers
to be such entrepreneurs.

Me. Betty Berning van die Universiteit
van Minnesota, VSA het onlangs wenke en
advies oor strategieë wat melkboere kan
volg om die winsgewendheid van hul plase
te bestuur wanneer pryse laag is, voorgelê.
In moeilike tye soos dié vra boere
net so maak ’n boer se produksiekoste of
-uitgawes ook saak.
Moenie dinge vir jouself
ingewikkeld maak nie
Dit gebeur so gereeld by die ontstaan van

navrae moet hanteer deur inligting van

Probleme:
• Identisering van alle bates en laste.
• Die instellings waar dié bates laaste
nansier of verseker is, waar die medies,
lewensversekering of beleggings is.
• Wie die rekenmeester of makelaars is
waar die inligting verkry kan word.
• Dit kan tydrowend en nie koste-effektief
wees.
ondervind.
selfde aard, by meer as een instelling laat
doen nie.

Waarom sal u by sê twee of meer on-
dernemings, wat dieselfde produkte en
dienste verskaf, sake doen as u dit by een
• Belangrik! Maak seker u is nie
• Bly by basiese behoeftebepalings en
mens noukeurig moet bestuur:
• Ken jou produksiekoste en kyk baie
mooi na jou uitgawes.
Maak seker dat jy jou kostes verstandig
besnoei.
• Ontwikkel ’n risikobestuursplan as ’n

is openlik beskikbaar vir alle produsente.
Tog is beplanning en bestuur belangrik
sou jy daarvan wou gebruikmaak.
Mnr.
wenke met me.
bewerkstellig.
Om jou voete te vind in die
varsproduktemarkte kan ’n uitdagende
taak vir ’n boer wees - veral as jy nog min
ondervinding van die formele markstruktuur
het. In dié berig, verwyder mnr.
wanneer jy ’n agent kies.
Voor die verkoop van produkte by
een van Suid-Afrika se varsprodukte-
markte, moet jy ’n betroubare agent kry.
Doen slegs besigheid met geregistreerde
agente en agentskappe wat by die Land-
bouprodukte Agente Raad is.
Ander kostes soos koue-storing of ryp-
wordingfooie kan ook van algehele verkope
verhaal word.
Ten slotte verskaf geldige bankbesonder-
hede.
nabygeleë is.
Doen navorsing oor so veel as moontlik
“Jou agent is jou bondgenoot.
32 palette komkommers aewer, mag jy dalk
besoek.
Maak seker wat die huidige
en verwagte prys wat jou pro-
duk kan oplewer, is: “Jy moet
egter alreeds hierna gekyk
het, maar bevestig dit weer
nader aan die tyd omdat dit
kon verander het.”
Laastens, vra die agent lank
vooraf of die verpakking van
jou produk aan die industrie-
en verbruikers se regulasies voldoen.
Verpakking is ontsettend belangrik omdat
aankope dikwels op visuele impak gebaseer
is.
in ’n groen sak verpak was.
sie.”
Maak seker jou produk daag in ’n
merk stig by die mark.
bare verkoper by wie hy enige tyd kan koop.”
Na-diens prosedures.
Na aoop van die verkope, kan die
boer ’n mondelings- of geskrewe
produkte weer kom afhaal.
verkoop is.

Get the balance right
When planting the home vegetable patch,
we often go to the box of seeds and pull
out the varieties that take our fancy at the
time, and sow the seedbeds or plant direct,
depending on the vegetable.
The amount planted is usually governed
more by the quantity of seed you have
than the amount you need.
And so you end up with far too many of
certain vegetables and too little of others.
To get the balance right, list the possible
vegetables to plant and note the planting
season of each.
Then work out how much of each
you’re going to use every week.
This doesn’t mean you’ll have to plant
that vegetable every week - some will
keep for several weeks from one planting.
Cabbages can be rst harvested just
before maturity while the other vegetables
are still growing. They’ll hold for weeks
once fully mature. You can also plant
early- and later-maturing varieties to
extend the period of harvesting even
further from one planting.
This means you may only have to plant
every six weeks to have continuity.
If you work out how many cabbages
you’ll use over this period, you can
calculate how many to plant every time.
You can plan on spinach for about three
plantings a year as you harvest the leaves
continually.
Beet might have to be planted once a
month.
To extend the time between plantings,
plan to plant more beet and harvest the

rst roots when they’re still half-size.
Beans are more tricky as there’s a short
harvesting period, which may only be three
weeks for bush types.
Harvesting young beans will extend the
period and encourage the plants to set more
fruit and increase the yield.
To calculate how much to plant, work on
about 1kg/m for bush types. It’s practical
to plant runner beans as well to extend the
harvesting period. Where ground is limited,
only plant vegetables with higher value and
longer bearing periods, especially if they take
up less space.
Spinach, peppers, brinjals, chillies and
tomatoes would be good value.

Marli ontgin ander talente
’n Oud-leerling van
Hoërskool Standerton
baan haar weg in die
grootmenswêreld nie op
die tradisionele manier nie.
Marli Geyser, ’n
eerstejaar in aptekerswese
by die Noordwes-
Universiteit, gaan op 26
Oktober die voorprogram
vir die bekende Elvis
Blue by die K-ôpi-Kô
restaurant op Frankfort
doen.
Dit is nie ongewoon om
’n aptekerswese-student te
sien wat ander talente ten
volle uitleef nie, dink maar
aan voormalige Mej. Suid-
Afrika van 1987, Wilma
van der Bijl.
Marli het geen formele
sangopleiding gehad nie,
maar soos menige ander
in die skoolkoor gesing
en ook kitaarlesse by Alf
Doubell van Standerton
begin neem.
By die voorprogram
beplan sy om sowat vier of
vyf liedjies in Afrikaans en
Engels te sing en haarself
met kitaar te begelei.
Sy het reeds ’n paar
video’s opgeneem wat op
youtube te sien is.
Haar gunstelingsanger is
ongetwyfeld Ben Howard,
wat Indie Folk, die
muskiegenre wat beïnvloed
is deur folk en klassieke
countrymusiek, sy eie
gemaak het.
Marli was aanvanklik
huiwerig om haar gusteling
Afrikaanse sanger of groep
te noem, maar Riana Nel,
Adam en Theuns Jordaan
spreek haar aan.
Volgens haar is ouers,
Johan en Judy, meer
opgewonde as sy oor die
wending in haar loopbaan.
Met ’n propvol
akademiese kurrikulum
sien sy tog kans vir die
verhoog.
“As ek die geleentheid
kry, sal ek sing.”
Sy was van kleinsaf lief
vir sing en haar raad aan
voornemende sangers is
om hulle musiek hulle eie
te maak.
“Maak musiek waarvan
jy hou.”
Selfs die strawwe
mededinging in die
musiekbedryf skrik
haar nie af nie omdat
kompetisie, volgens haar,
goed vir die bedryf is.

AANLYN-GALERY
VIDEO OF THE WEEK
This cheeseburger onion ring recipe will give
you life! Have a look at this week’s video of
the week on our website at standertonadver-
tiser.co.zaZoo onWheels besoek kleuterskool
Zoo on Wheels het Hompie Kedompie
Kleuterskool onlangs besoek.
Die kleuters het van die geleentheid
gebruikgemaak om diere van nader te
beskou.
Sommige was ietwat bang, terwyl ander
nie hul opgewondenheid kon verbloem nie.
Zoo on Wheels het verskillende soorte
diere soos slange en akkedisse saamgebring,
maar die hoogtepunt was ongetwyfeld die
tier.
