4. UPCYCLING…
• Making a thow-away
object useful.
• Giving recyclables a
creative purpose
• Artistic expression
• Saving valuable landfill
space
5. TODAYS AGENDA
• Convey ideas on
upcycling in the garden
• Encourage everyone to
recycle, reuse, and
imagine!
• A few tips and statistics
for the garden
• A couple of garden
tours
49. Recycles Glass
• Glass is heavy (high shipping cost), not very
valuable and it breaks into small pieces that
get everywhere in the waste stream. Breakage
also compounds the biggest obstacle to value,
glass needs to be sorted by color to have
significant value to companies that use
recycled glass.
57. TIRES in the U.S.
(*2003 statistics, Rubber Manufacturers Association )
Number of scrap tires generated annually: 290 million
Percentage of total solid waste generated: 2.0 percent
Number of scrap tires going to a market: 233 million
Number of scrap tires used for fuel: 130 million
Number of scrap tires used in civil engineering
projects:
56 million
Number of scrap tires used in ground rubber
applications:
28 million
Number of scrap tires punched/stamped into new
products:
7 million
Number of tires exported: 9 million
Number of tires in stockpiles: 265 million
70. Steel Can Statistics
• Every minute, approximately 20,000 steel cans
are recycled in the United States.
• The amount of steel recovered through
recycled packaging in 2005 (more than 1.4
million tons) would yield enough steel to build
185,000 steel framed homes, or as many
homes as there are in the entire state of
Wyoming.
117. Some Recycle Stats…
• Almost every hour, nearly 250,000 plastic
bottles are dumped. It is not surprising that
plastic bottles constitute close to 50% of
recyclable waste in the dumps.
• Nearly 60 to 70% of waste found in dustbins
can be recycled and reused and close to 50%
of the same waste can be composted.
118. More stats…
• Plastic not only adds to landfill space and takes
forever to decompose. Used plastic dumped into
the sea kills and destroys sea life at an estimated
1,000,000 sea creatures per year!
• United States is one of world’s largest producers
of trash. Trash is produced at an alarming rate of
1,609 pounds of trash per person, per year.
