99% of electronics become e-waste within six months, causing a rise in landfill waste. If e-waste continues increasing at the current rate, the annual amount could double by 2050. Most e-waste, around 80% in developing countries and 65% in developed countries like the EU, ends up in landfills instead of being properly recycled. E-waste contains hazardous materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium that pollute the soil and groundwater when landfilled. Improper e-waste disposal also wastes natural resources like gold, silver, and plastics used in devices, and causes an increase in greenhouse gas emissions over producing new devices from raw materials.
