David Max SATURN 2018 - Migrating from Oracle to Espresso
This talk is about our experience at LinkedIn migrating our content ingestion system from using Oracle to using our internal database system Espresso. I explain some of the reasons for doing the migration as well as how we met the challenges of swapping database technologies with no down time and in a way that was transparent to our clients.

Moving from app services to azure functions
When we first started out with Azure, we created VM’s to run our web applications and backend services. Afterwards we moved our web application logic into App Services while using native Azure Services for our backend requirements. With containers we could isolate our individual web application components even further and allowed us to go full DevOps. Now Azure Functions allows us to remove a complete application stack allowing us to focus purely on functionality.
In this talk I go over the several phases we went through getting our application from bare metal into the cloud and how we now leverage Azure Functions to achieve higher throughput and faster delivery times while reducing the complexity of the web application and costs.

Building Event Streaming Applications with Pac-Man (Ricardo Ferreira, Conflue...
Since Pac-Man was originally released in the '80s, it has been a beacon of fun and joy for people of all ages. What few people know is that this game can also be used to inspire developers on how to build event streaming applications. In this near-zero-slides talk, attendees will get to play the game to generate events. As they play, the presenter will write from scratch a scoreboard using ksqlDB -- an open-source event streaming database built for Apache Kafka.
After building the scoreboard, it will be discussed the different strategies to make the data available elsewhere so any interested service could leverage it with ease. Examples of these services will be provided to monitor in near real-time the scoreboard, revealing whoever is the most proficient Pac-Man player in the room.
Apache Flink First Half of 2015 Community Update
Flink has graduated from an Apache incubator project to a top-level project, attracting many new contributors. Recent releases have added features like a Table API, Gelly graph processing, and integrations with SAMOA machine learning and Google Dataflow. There are many tools and possibilities available in the Icinga monitoring ecosystem. Setup Icinga 2 within a distributed architecture, put Icinga Web 2 on top and visualise alerts. Further you’ve already setup your preferred graphing solution (Graphite, InfluxDB, etc.) and Grafana greets you with a shiny metrics dashboard. Log events are processed and Elastic Stack or Graylog add more possibilities to correlate them with monitoring alerts.
Having so many tools requires you to know how to connect them, or simply integrate an existing data source or frontend into your all-in-one user dashboard. Be it Graphs in your detail view, additional log events on a critical service view or yet a global map for location based alerts. Maybe you’ll also want to provide as much details in your notifications as possible, think of fancy Grafana graphs.
This talk dives into existing and possible integrations, and explains why you sometimes just write your own integration. Carsten is the author of the Icinga Web 2 Grafana module while Michael focusses on Dashing and log processing. We’ll catch up with war stories (“meh, nothing exists”) to hero stories (“hooray, users love my integration”) and hope to motivate everyone out there doing the same. We will continue with practical development on Friday during the OSMC hackathon.

Key improvements included allowing physical chassis nesting in the UI, adding sysprep support for oVirt, merging over 300 pull requests across ManageIQ repositories, and updating installation and configuration guides. The next sprint review is scheduled for October 10th.
Localizing kibana for the global language landscape
IBM engineers have been working to localize Kibana, an open-source data visualization tool from Elastic, to support languages beyond English. They designed an integrated framework to enable translation of Kibana's views in a phased approach. Current status includes an internationalization engine and translation of Kibana loading text. Future phases will integrate AngularJS globalization, enable existing view translations, and allow contributing new language packs. The work benefits IBM customers and the open source community by making Kibana accessible to more global users.

Localizing kibana for the global language landscape
IBM engineers have been working to localize Kibana, an open-source data visualization tool from Elastic, to support languages beyond English. They designed an integrated framework to enable translation of Kibana's views in a phased approach. Current status includes an internationalization engine and translation of Kibana loading text. Future phases will integrate AngularJS globalization, enable existing view translations, and allow contributing new language packs. The work benefits IBM customers and the open source community by making Kibana accessible to more global users.

I have been working with Kubernetes for more than a year, from v1.3.6 to v1.6.7, and I am a CNCF certified Kubernetes administrator. Before I move on to something else, I would like to summarize and share my knowledges and take-aways about Kubernetes, from a software engineer perspective.

#RADC4L16: An API-First Archives Approach at NPR
This document discusses NPR's transition to a new digital archives system called Artemis 2.0. It took an API-first approach, developing the backend API first before building out the frontend. Key points discussed include developing a flexible data model, separating the frontend and backend codebases, using a proxy layer for business logic, and lessons learned around documentation, expectations, and migration challenges. The new system provides benefits like increased searchability, flexibility to adapt to growing needs, and more efficient metadata workflows.
Alfresco 5.0 Technology Review
The recent launch of Alfresco One 5.0 included many key enhancements to the software. Some are provided to increase ease-of-use to end users while others bring new and improved integrations and capabilities to administrators and developers. In addition to several bug fixes, SharePoint Protocol was replaced by Alfresco Office Services and now supports property mapping and better browser support. HTML5 preview includes full text search and the ability to download or permalink from the preview—all without Flash.
The latest improvements to solr 4 will bring a more responsive and faceted search to the software. This includes inline actions for search results as well as the search criteria defaulting to AND rather than OR. Support for clustering/sharding and term highlighting is expected soon as well.

Vevo has undergone a complete strategic and technical reboot, driven not only by product, but also by engineering. Since November 2015, Vevo has been replacing monolithic, legacy content services with a modern, modular, microservices architecture, all while developing new features and functionality. In parallel, Vevo has built its data platform from scratch to power internal analytics as well as a unique music video consumption experience through a new personalized feed of recommendations — all in less than one year.
This has been a monumental effort that was made possible in this short time span largely because of AWS technologies. The content team has been heavily using serverless architectures and AWS Lambda in the form of microservices, taking a similar approach to functional programming, which has helped us speed up the development process and time to market. The data team has been building the data platform by heavily leveraging Amazon Kinesis for data exchange across services, Amazon Aurora for consumer-facing services, Apache Spark on Amazon EMR for ETL + Machine Learning, as well as Amazon Redshift as the core analytics data store.

The project involved upgrading two major applications from Java Server Faces 1.1 to 2.0 to resolve compatibility issues with WebSphere Application Server 8.5. The development environment was configured and the applications were converted to the new JSF format. Testing showed improved page loading and interactions.
