Record Labels
A record label is a company which own the rights
to band's music, selling their audio and video in
different formats, they usually have some say in
                         the
 production, manufacture, distribution, marketing,
promotion, and enforcement of copyright for the
                   band's material.
The current major record labels are
Universal, Sony and Warner (and
have been within the top labels since 1988 and
control 70% of the world’s music market!).
Warp Records
• Warp Records is a British independent label founded in
1989 by Steve Beckett and the late Rob Mitchell from
their experiences working in a record store together.

• It is notable for discovering some of the most influential
artists in electronic music such as Aphex
  Twin, Autechre, Brian Eno and Boards of Canada;
though they have recently expanded outside of
electronica and signed indie rock bands.
Nothing records is a now defunct US record label
specialising in industrial rock and electronic
music. Founded in 1992 by Trent Reznor and John Malm
Jr. it is often used as an example of a ‘vanity label’;
owned by parent company Interscope.

As well as the popular bands Nine Inch Nails and
Marilyn Manson, it also signed artists such as
Autechre, Einstürzende Neubauten, Squarepusher and
Pig.
• 4AD is a British Independent label founded in 1979 and still
running today by Ivo Watts-Russell, also a producer of some
of the bands. He is most well known for Cocteau Twin's
debut Garland; their song Ivo was named after him.
• Maybe one my favourite records labels; signing artists such
as Pixies, The Birthday Party, Bauhaus, Clan Of Xymox or
David Byrne to things like Purity Ring, Ariel Pink's Haunted
  Grafitti and Grimes.
Mute Records is an
independent UK based
label, it was founded in
1978 by Daniel Miller. Most
of the music signed by
them can be classed as
‘experimental’.

It boasts names such as
Depeche
Mode, Erasure, Fad
Gadget, Kraftwerk, M83
and Grinderman, Yeasayer
and Liars
