Whoare the NRIs?
NRIsis an acronymthat standsfor National,Sub-Regional,Regional andYouthIGFinitiatives.These are
the InternetGovernance Forumsorganizedonanational basisindifferentcountries,orona regional or
sub-regional level, dependingonthe size of the geographicarea,where the maincriteriaforidentifying
regionisgeography,butalsoinsome casesmutual language andculture.
What do the NRIs have in common and how are theyorganized?
A sharedobjective forall NRIsisadheringtothe core valuesandprinciplesof the IGF.Theyare
contributingtoInternetGovernance relatedmatters,nationally,regionally,andglobally.The NRIsare
organicand independentintheirorganization.However,theyhave agreedandare expected torespect
the mainIGF principlesandworkingmodalities.Therefore,the NRIsare openandtransparent,inclusive
and non-commercial,withamultistakeholderparticipationduringthe whole organizational processof
the annual meting(s),aswell asduring the meeting(s) itself,andwithabottom-updecisionmaking
process.All partiesagree andacceptto act on an equal footing,whichisaunique butimportantaspect
of the InternetGovernance Forum[IGF].
What do the NRIs do?
The NRIs gathertheircommunitytoundertake openconsultationsanddevelopanannual IGFmeeting,
that addresseskeyissuesof concernlocally,orregionally. Usingabottom-upconsultationprocess,the
NRIsstrive to include all stakeholders(governments,civilsociety,private sector,technical community),
to worktogetheronissuespertainingtothe Internet,all actingonequal footing.
Takingintoaccount all receivedinputsfromtheirrespective communities,the NRIsdevelop
comprehensive agendasthatreflectthe needsof the community,andlogisticsfororganizingthe major
annual event(s),where differentstakeholdergroupswillgatheranddiscussthe issuesof highestpriority
to them.Some recommendmessagesoroutputsforpotential solutionsandnextstepstowardthe
improvementsonInternetgovernance relatedfields.
How are the IGF initiativesrecognizedbythe IGFSecretariat and listedonthe IGFwebsite?
For one IGF initiativetobe recognizedbythe IGFSecretariatandlistedonthe IGF website,awritten
statementoutliningthe followingessentialinformationneedstobe submittedtothe IGF Secretariat:
• Detailsregardingthe compositionof the core OrganizingTeam:full names,affiliationsand
stakeholdergroupof members.
• Dedicatedwebsite/webpage;
• Contact detailsof the initiative’scoordinator(s);
• A clearstatementthatthe preparatoryworkand the meeting itself will be organizedin
accordance withthe IGF principlesof being: openandtransparent,inclusive,non-commercial,
multistakeholderandbottomup;
• Detailsaboutthe annual meetingincludingthe organizationslogistics;
• Afterthe event,the initiativeswill needtosendafull reportthat will reflectthe substance and
organizational logisticsof the preparatoryworkandthe meetingday(s).

This year we have beenable to standardize the process ofNepal IGFwhere we were able to secure
the program committee guidelinesandevaluationcriteria.
The process has beendevelopedinconsultationwiththe community and we stronglybelieve that
wrong act can be ratifiedif it’sdone usingthe right processand ifa right act isachieveddoing
wrong process there is no ratification.
