Receptors translate various types of stimuli into nerve impulses- Nerv.docxlmarie40
Receptors translate various types of stimuli into nerve impulses. Nerve impulses do not vary from neuron to neuron (except in the speed of conduction). Thus, the perception of a sensation depends on the specific sensory pathway: e.g. to what area of the sensory cortex is the impulse sent?. Since a sensory neuron generally carries information from a specific receptor, stimulation of that neuron in other ways (trauma, infection, etc.) can cause it to send an impulse that may be interpreted by the brain as the normal sensation. An example of this is "seeing stars" when the optic nerve is compressed by a knock to the head, or the jolt-fike shock of "hitting the funny bone" when the ulnar nerve is compressed. Referred Pain With referred pain, pain is perceived at a location other than the site of the painful stimulus. For example, pain in internal organs is often perceived as coming from the surface of the body. This is likely because nociceptors from both intemal organs and portions of the skin converge in the same dorsal root. The brain interprets pain signals from organs as coming from the skin instead, because this is the "usual" stimulus. A classic example of referred pain is angina pectoris where patients with ischemic heart disease report having pain in the left pectoral region and left shoulder and arm. Other examples can be seen in the figure below. Another example of referred pain is ulnar nerve entrapment when the ulnar nerve in the arm becomes compressed or irritated. See the diagrams below to answer the following auections.

chapter 12 and 13
1. In Chapter 12 E.O. Wilson is discussion the role of complex species interactions in ecosystem function. Which of the following is NOT a point made in the chapter? Some interactions between species are complex and bizarre such as those described as vampire hunters, zombie masters, swindlers, slave makes and giant killers. The data on structure and function of ecosystems does exist, but we don't know how to interpret it. Food webs are much more complex than a few herbivores eating plants. We have named about 2/3 of the world's species but we have barely begun to explain the complex role of species in their respective ecosystems. QUESTION 4 1. Chapter 13 covers biodiversity of the aquatic world and Chapter 14 covers the biodiversity in the invisible small organisms. Which of the following is NOT an idea from these chapters? There are virtually no insects in lake or ocean ecosystems. Bacteria belonging to the genera Prochlorococcus and Pelagibacter are the most common organisms on the planet. Lake Baikal in the Russian step region of Siberia is the oldest and deepest freshwater lake in the world. There are fish that host bioluminescent bacteria on their undersides so that they will not be visible from predators that hide below them.

Questions: 1. Know all of the ranks within the Linnaean taxonomic hierarchy, including the more recent addition of domains. How does the three domain system differ from the 5 kingdom system? Know how to write a species name. 2. Be familiar with the extensive diversity within the prokaryotes: shape, organization, Gram-staining, habitats, metabolic diversity, ecological importance. Many of these features are scattered on the cladogram (i.e. they do not define clades). What is a possible explanation for this? 3. Be familiar with the extensive diversity within the protists: form, motility. lifecycles, nutrition, habitats, ecological importance. Give examples of each. 4. Do the "plant-like" protists ("algae") form a monophyletic group? What about the "animal-like" protists ("protozoa"), or the "fungus-like" protists? Do the "seaweeds" form a monophyletic group? 5. Which protists form symbiotic relationships to form lichens? Which protists form symbiotic relationships with coral? Which protists are part of the phytoplankton? And which bacteria are part of the phytoplankton? 6. What features link the green algae to the land plants? The green algae are paraphyletic, with some members more closely related to the land plants. Which green algal group is closest to the land plants? (Hint refer to the land plant phylogeny handout) 7. Know the major stages of land plant evolution (movement onto land, vascular plants, seeds, flowers). Know which plant groups have vascular tissue, seeds and flowers. Be able to map important features onto a cladogram. 8. What were some features of the first land plant macrofossils (i.e. whole plant fossils)? For example, did they have leaves or roots? 9. What steps are hypothesized in the derivation of the land plant life cycle (altemation of generations) from the Charophycean green algal Iffe cycle? 10. During what era did land plants first appear? The transition from an aquatic to a terrestrial environment presented many challenges for early land plants. What adaptive features do we see in land plants that help overcome these challenges? 11. The main groups of seedless plants are the bryophytes, lycophytes, and monilophytes (ferns, whisk ferns, horsetails). Which of these groups is paraphyletic? What are some features that characterize each of these groups? What do the life cycles of lycophytes, horsetails and ferns have in common? 12. Lycophytes and horsetails share similar histories in that both had peak diversity during the Carboniferous (Age of Coal), including huge tree forms. How would you describe the habitats of these extinct giant trees? What environmental shifts occurred with the onset of the Mesozoic (often called the Age of Gymnosperms) that may have contributed to the demise of these giants and the success of plants that produce seeds and pollen? Would you expect to find giant bryophytes in the fossil record (we haven't yet)? 13. What are the five major groups of seed plants? What are the benefits of having see.

Which of the following is NOT an accurate match of a system and why that particular. ecosystem should be saved? New Guinea - The second largest island in the world that supports rainforest wetlands and grasslands which have the greatest species richness. Cemade in South America - The most untouched tropical rain forest with the most dixerste cloud forest species particularly an number of colorful birds and insects. The Tepuis - Mountains of Venezuela and Western Guyana which include high elevation ecosystems that are worlds to themselves with biodiversity on each mountain peak that is distinct from lowlands or neighboring peaks. Longleaf Pine in North American South - At one time the tree species was dominant and the region supports a great diversity of herbacious and shrubby plants as well as the greatest richness of pitcher plant bogs. QUESTION 6 1. Which of the following is NOT an important point made in ? Pleuston is the boundary between air and water and there are organisms that have evolved to live at this layer. The number of Ph.D. students investigating ergansms or evolution has dramatically declined and this limits our ability to learn about the natural world. Barcoding has vastly expanded our basic knowledge about biodiversity. The taxonomic naming system of Genus and speices within a larger hierarchy is still an excellent way to organize.

chapter 12 and 13

Questions- 1- Know all of the ranks within the Linnaean taxonomic hier.docxlmarie40

Questions 1-20 are multiple choice. Pick one best answer. 1. Mutations near the carboxyl terminal of the procollagen 1 molecule (encoded by COLIAl) cause more severe symptoms than those in the amino terminal. This is an example of A. dominant negative mutation. B. locus heterogeneity. C. haplosufficiency. D. allelic heterogeneity. E. haploinsufficiency. 2. Which of the following could produce X Y females and XX males? A. Deletion of the SR Y gene. B. Point mutation in the SR Y gene. C. Insertion of the SR Y gene to the different region of Y chromosome in the father. D. Deletion of the Y chromosome. E. Translocation of the SR Y gene to the X chromosome during meiosis in the father. 3. In Sickle Cell Disease genotypes, while AA and A S are both phenotypically healthy, SS suffers from the disease. However, both A S and SS genotypes also produce sickle cells (sickle-shaped red blood cells) although A S also produces normal red blood cells. Which of the following best describes the relationship between A and S alleles? A. A is dominant to S in sickle cell production. B. A is dominant to S in sickle cell disease, but A and S are codominant in sickle cell production. C. A is dominant to S in sickle cell disease and in sickle cell production. D. June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
