INTRODUCTION
 With increasing demand for energy and with fast depleting conventional sources of energy, the non-conventional sources of
energy are gaining importance.
 These are crucial in the present times, for any country to meet its emission targets under the Climate Agreements as well,
eventually in the course of sustaining a cleaner environment.
 The renewable energy program started in India with the establishment of Department of Non-Conventional Energy
Resources in 1982
 India’s non-conventional energy potential is estimated to be about 1,95,000 MW; of which an estimate of 31% comes from
sun, 30% from oceans, 26% from biofuel and 13% from wind.
 Presently, in terms of Installed capacity, India stands at fourth position in the world in terms of installed Renewable Energy
capacity, according to India’s power Ministry.

OUTCOMES OF OVER USING CONVENTIONAL SOURCES
Store,
Purchase
From Marketing
Quality
From years man has been exploiting
natural resources for selfish needs.
The over exploitation led to the
depletion of these sources along with
their hazardous outcomes such as:
 Deforestation
 Global warming
 Ozone layer depletion
◉ Solar energy is the energy from the sun. The
sun is the ultimate source of energy. Solar
energy is the most readily available and free
source of energy since prehistoric times. It is
estimated that solar energy equivalent to over
15,000 times the worlds annual commercial
energy consumption reaches the earth every
year.
◉ It can be harnessed as :
a. Solar water heaters
b. Solar cells
c. Solar cooker
.
SOLAR ENERGY
SOLAR POWERED BOATS
Solar powered boats get their energy from the
sun. Using electric motors and storage
batteries charged by solar panels and
photovoltaic cells, solar powered boats can
significantly reduce or eliminate their use of
fossils fuels. Solar boats are uniquely suitable
to transform light energy into movement.
Environmentally friendly solar energy is an
energy efficient way to power commercial
oceangoing vessels as well as leisure boats.
HYDRO-ENERGY
◉ Hydro energy is the energy produced by using the potential
energy stored in water. Wherever the sufficient head or
change in elevation could be found rivers and streams
where dammed and mills were built. Water under pressure
flows through turbine causing it to spin. The turbine is
connected to a generator which produce electricity. In order
to produce in a electricity a hydroelectric system requires a
location with the following features :
 change in elevation or head : 20 feet@100gal/min = 200
Watts.
TIDAL ENERGY
◉ Electricity generation involves the construction of a barrage
across the estuary to block the incoming and outgoing tide. The
head of water is then used to drive turbines to generate
electricity from the elevated water in the basin as in
hydroelectric dams.
◉ Barrages can be designed to generate electricity on the ebb
side, or flood side or both. Tidal range may vary over a wide
range from site to site. A tidal range of at least 7metre is
required for economical operation and for sufficient the head of
water for the turbines.
9
ADVANTAGES
◉ They are non-polluting.
◉ Available in abundant.
◉ Freely available.
◉ Low harnessing costs.
◉ Low environmental damage.
10
DISADVANTAGES
◉ High cost.
◉ Skilled workers required.
◉ Space required is more.
◉ Low efficiency of wind power plant.
11
CONCLUSION
◉ From about presentation we came to accumulation
that with the increasing demand for energy with
increasing population the nonconventional sources
of energy should be adopted in order to sustain
and preserve our natural resources for future
generation.
