Jamaica is a Caribbean island 146 miles long and 21-52 miles wide with a tropical climate. It has a population of nearly 3 million people who are mostly of African descent and speak English and Patois. Jamaican culture features distinctive music genres like reggae, dancehall, and ska. Literature began with African folktales and local architecture reflects Spanish, African, and British influences. Theater is also popular, especially pantomime performances that fuse dance, music, and humor.
Zambia experiences heavy rainfall for part of the year which causes flooding and increases mosquito-borne diseases. Poverty is widespread in Zambia, with over 70% of the population living on less than $1 per day. Many children in Zambia lack shoes, making them vulnerable to injuries, infections, and inability to attend school. During the rainy season, the lack of proper footwear is an even greater hardship due to mud and standing water.
The document summarizes changes in Virginia during the 20th century, including the transition from an agricultural to urban society. As old farming systems became ineffective and crop prices declined, many people moved from rural to urban areas, causing Virginia's cities to grow. Technological advances in transportation supported this urban growth. Virginia initially resisted the Supreme Court's 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education that ended racial segregation in public schools through a policy of "Massive Resistance." However, this resistance ultimately failed and schools were integrated. The document also profiles several famous 20th century Virginians from this time period.
Reconstruction in Virginia faced many economic problems following the Civil War. The economy and infrastructure were in ruins, with destroyed railroads, bridges, plantations and crops. Freed slaves also needed basic necessities. To address these issues, the Freedman's Bureau provided assistance to freed slaves while sharecropping became a common system for freedmen and poor white farmers. However, African Americans saw many of the rights and freedoms gained during Reconstruction taken away after it ended, when Jim Crow laws enforced racial segregation and discrimination.
Relations between India and Pakistan have been strained since their partition in 1947, primarily due to the Kashmir dispute and subsequent military conflicts. The Kashmir issue and wars have created hostility between the two nations, though they remain historically, culturally, and economically linked. Public opinion polling shows most Indians and Pakistanis hold negative views of their neighbor's influence.

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND: UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION LAW AND POLICY AS APPLIE...Kris Weisz
This document discusses the plight of Filipino-Amerasian children born to U.S. servicemen and Filipina women. While the 1982 Amerasian Immigration Act provides preferential immigration status to Amerasian children in other Asian countries, it excludes those from the Philippines. The U.S. had a significant military presence in the Philippines for nearly a century, during which tens of thousands of Amerasian children were born and faced poverty and discrimination. The document argues that Filipino-Amerasians experience conditions similar to other Amerasians covered by the 1982 Act and therefore Congress should amend the Act to extend benefits to Filipino-Amerasians as well.
Native American Cultural Change Under European Colonization.Martin Mongiello
When the American colonies declared independence from Britain in 1776, the Cherokee people had allied with the British. In response, American Patriot militias led by Griffith Rutherford destroyed dozens of Cherokee villages in North and South Carolina, killing families and destroying crops and livestock. This event had massive cultural impacts on the Cherokee, nearly wiping out their culture. While the Cherokee assimilated aspects of Western culture, they also influenced American culture through their art, dance, and traditions. However, the Cherokee were subjected to further broken treaties and violence, such as the Trail of Tears. Though the U.S. government has apologized, the Cherokee perspective is that the apology is

She highlights how the Islands are economically self-sufficient and fund their own healthcare, education, and government services. Ormond argues that the Falkland Islands are not a colony and that the people have a right to self-determination as recognized by the UN Charter. She
The British West Indies Federation formed in 1958 and collapsed in 1962. It aimed to unite the English-speaking Caribbean islands economically and politically as Britain's interest waned after emancipation. However, tensions arose over funding disparities between islands. Jamaica's withdrawal after a 1961 referendum ended the Federation, as it was the main financial contributor. Key reasons for collapse included conflicts over capital site selection, differing political development levels between islands, and larger islands seeking to change the constitution in their favor. The Federation established critical services like the University of the West Indies, but internal disputes over representation and financial contributions ultimately led to its demise after just five years.
1) In the late 19th/early 20th century, California developed extensive water infrastructure like canals and reservoirs to transport water from northern to southern California and irrigate the dry lands, enabling population growth.
2) Labor unions formed in the late 19th century to fight for workers' rights, with some utilizing more radical strategies, though they faced resistance from employers.
3) During World War 2, California's economy and population boomed as its military bases and aircraft industry expanded greatly, though Japanese Americans faced internment following Pearl Harbor.
During WWII, the United States home front mobilized to support the war effort through rationing, increased industrial production, and more women working. The government instituted rationing of goods like food and gas to ensure supplies reached troops. Women joined the workforce in large numbers, taking jobs in factories producing war materials. Production skyrocketed as government spending on defense increased to 41% of GDP. Through shared sacrifice and a mobilized home front, the United States was able to overcome the Great Depression and support its military overseas to help win WWII.
The Roaring Twenties was a decade of social and economic change in the United States following World War 1. President Warren G. Harding promised a "return to normalcy" and supported pro-business policies. However, his administration was plagued by corruption scandals. His successor, Calvin Coolidge, restored integrity but continued laissez-faire economics. The average income rose 35% during the decade, fueled by installment plans, national advertising, and labor-saving devices. Cultural changes included the flapper era of greater freedom for women, the rise of the automobile, radio, and African American culture like jazz. However, Prohibition failed as organized crime profited from bootlegging alcohol.

The intensification of the filipino american war andKim Tubig
The document summarizes key events of the Filipino-American War, including:
1) The Americans gained control of the Visayas islands in early 1899 through attacks on Iloilo and capturing Cebu by February.
2) In August 1899, the Bates Treaty recognized American sovereignty over Jolo while respecting the Sultan's rights, and called for cooperation against piracy in exchange for payments.
3) The Moro Province was established in 1903 to govern Muslim majority areas in the south.
4) Aguinaldo eluded the American forces by moving his government repeatedly until his capture in March 1901, ending the war.
The document discusses several issues related to conflicts in Southeast Asia, including oppressive regimes in Myanmar and other countries, sovereignty disputes between countries in the region, and intra-state conflicts within countries. It describes human rights abuses and oppression of minority groups by the military regime in Myanmar. It also outlines territorial disputes between Indonesia and East Timor, the Philippines and Malaysia, and Malaysia and Singapore. Civil conflicts within Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries over separatist and autonomy issues are also summarized.
Elpidio Quirino was the second president of the Philippines, holding office from 1948 to 1953. He had a long career of public service before becoming president, including as a representative, senator, and secretary of finance and interior. As president during the Huk rebellion, he granted amnesty to Huk guerrillas but agrarian reforms proved insufficient. Quirino supported various industrial and infrastructure projects but was unpopular due to corruption and losing the 1953 election to Ramon Magsaysay.

the celebrity chef a following that was
tested by revelations in a racial

lawsuit filed by a former employee against

August, but not before the Food Network
dropped Deen, after a deposition revealed
she implicitly condoned racially charged
language.
19. 9. Death of Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela died Dec. 5 at age
95, leaving a legacy that extended far
beyond ending 46 years of apartheid in
South Africa. He inspired generations
around the world to fight not just for
racial equality, but for inclusiveness.
More than 91 world leaders, the largest
gathering in the continent's
history, made their way to his memorial.
20. 8. Papal transition
Mario Jorge Bergoglio, a former papal
candidate, found himself in the Holy See
when Pope Benedict opted for a centuriesfirst retirement package. His homage to St.
Francis of Assisi and humility endeared
Pope Francis to millions. He won over more
liberal spectators with his urgings to
relieve poverty rather than decry
homosexuality, premarital sex and
abortion.
21. 7. North Korea missile threats
Nearly half of North Korea's population lives
in poverty. Its former leader ill-treated his
own people and blustered plenty to
outsiders, but the country's wretched
backwardness seemed unlikely to produce
any weaponry — until this year. Under Kim
Jong Un, North Korea defied sanctions to
launch nuclear tests, missiles and threats
of war.
22. 6. Syria civil war
Fueled by the Arab Spring, Syrian protests
have devolved into a brutal civil war with
more than 2 million refugees and
120,000 others killed in a country of 21.1
million. The use of sarin, whose
prohibition Syria had agreed to in
1993, nearly brought direct U.S. action.
Peace talks have been scheduled for
January 2014.
23. 5. George Zimmerman trial
The July 13 acquittal of neighborhood
watch volunteer George
Zimmerman, charged with seconddegree murder in the death of 17-yearold Trayvon Martin, did little to resolve
America's hot-button issues. The trial
inflamed issues that run magma-deep in
the nation's foundation, among them
race, crime, territorial defense and
justice.
24. 4. Royal baby birth
Britain topped a 30-year high in births in
2012. The Duchess of Cambridge did her
part to maintain the momentum this year:
Her pregnancy injected an estimated $347
million to an otherwise sluggish economy
and taught impatient royalists that babies
come when they come. The wee babe
carries a big title: His Royal Highness
Prince George Alexander Louis of
Cambridge.
25. 3. Boston Marathon bombing
On Patriots' Day, as more than 23,000 runners
wended through historic Boston, two
brothers allegedly set off a homemade
bomb near the finish line, killing three and
injuring 264. They picked the wrong city.
Within days, police tracked down the
Tsarnaev brothers, one of whom died in the
chaos. The survivor, in solitary
confinement, faces trial in 2014.
26. 2. Obamacare (Affordable Care Act)
Americans pay more for health care than
other industrialized countries, yet they are
afforded less care because of costs.
Millions also lack health insurance.
Obamacare, though, has been a lightning
rod since the president signed the
executive order in 2010. The ACA survived a
Supreme Court challenge and a
presidential election, but it buckled under
technical glitches.
27. 1. Jodi Arias trial
Unlike the George Zimmerman trial, the
criminal case of Jodi Arias was more
―classic‖ courtroom drama — albeit
played out on social media and livestreamed. The gory stock and trade of
HLN, the trial focused on Arias as a
possible sociopath who killed her
boyfriend in a jealous rage or an abused
woman with a tenuous hold on reality.
