PHILIP ZIMBARDO: But the next day, on the morning of the next day, the prisoners rebelled. And what the guards did, they came to me and said, “The prisoners are rebelling. What are we going to do?” I said, “It's your prison, whatever you want. I will do it, but you've got to tell me.” And they said, “We have to treat force with force,” so they broke down the doors -- GUARD 1: (Indiscernible) take your bed (Indiscernible). DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: -- stripped the prisoners naked, dragged them out. Some of them, they tied up their feet. They put them in solitary confinement which is a tiny little hole in the closet oh, about this big and dark, and they said, “At this point, everything but breathing air is a privilege. Food is a privilege. Clothes are a privilege. Having a bed is a privilege.” And so the guards began to say, “Here are the new rules. And the new rules are you are dangerous and we are going to treat you as such.” And then, it began to escalate. Each day, the level of abuse, aggression, violence against prisoners got more and more extreme. And so the guards changed to become more dominant, and, you see, it's all about power. It's the whole institution that empowers the guards who are the representative of this institution called prison to do whatever is necessary to prevent prisoners from escaping, maintain law and order. GUARD 2: Keep going. Once I was blind. PRISONER 1: (Singing) Once, I was blind. DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: The way -- the direction it took was having them engage in ever more humiliating tasks, cleaning toilet bowls out with their bare hands, taking their blankets and putting them in dirt with nettles, and the prisoner had to spend hours taking the nettles out if they wanted to, you know, sleep. And it's essentially saying, “We have the power to create a totally arbitrary, mindless environment, and that's the environment you have to live in.” So some of the prisoners are now crushed. And in 36 hours, the first kid has an emotional breakdown meaning crying, screaming, irrational thinking. PRISONER 2: I've got to go to a doctor, anything. I want out! I want out now! Goddamnit! DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: And we have to release him. In 5 days, we had to release five of the prisoners because the situation was so overwhelming. What about the kids who didn't break down? They became zombies, zombies in the sense that they became almost all mindlessly obedient. Whatever the guards would say, they did. Do this, they did. “Do 10 pushups. Do 20 pushups. Step on him while he's doing pushups. Tell him he's a bastard.” PRISONERS: Prisoner 819 did a bad thing. Prisoner 819 did a bad thing. DR. DR. STEVE TAYLOR: If you go to Google and type in the word "Experiment," one of the first things you'll see is the Stanford Prison Experiment. It's probably the best known psychological study of all time.
It all began in West Coast America on a summer's day back in 1971, when college students grew their hair long, protested against their government, were pro-peace and totally anti-authority, or so we thought until Philip Zimbardo.

DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: So the Stanford Prison Study very simply is an attempt to see what happens when you put really good people in a bad place.
We put an ad in the city newspaper, wanted students for study of prison life lasting up to 2 weeks. We're going to pay you $15 a day. This is back in 1971. It's pretty good money, and we picked 75 volunteers, gave them a battery of psychological tests, and we picked two dozen who in all dimensions were normal and healthy to begin with. And then we did what is critical for all research. We randomly assigned half of them to the role of playing guards or the role of playing prisoners. It's literally like flipping a coin.
And then what we did is we told the guards, “Come down a day early,” and we had them pick their own uniform. We had them help set up the prison so they'd feel like it was their prison, and the prisoners were coming into their place. The prisoners, we simply said, “Wait at home in the dormitories.” Well, what we didn't tell them, which is a little bit of the deception of omission, is that they were arrested by the city police.
MALE: Right there, they took me out the door. They put my hands against the car. It was a real cop car. It was a real policeman that took me to the police station, the basement of the police station.
DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: I had told the policeman to put a blindfold on the prisoners. Since they had never been arrested, they didn't know that doesn't happen. The reason for the blindfold is my assistants would come, put them in our car, bring them down to our prison, and they'd be in our prison now blindfolded. The guards would strip them naked, delouse them, pretending that they were lice. It's kind of a degradation ritual. And after the first day, I was about to end it because nothing was happening.

BY THE 1970s, psychologists had done a series of studies establishing the social power of groups. They showed, for example, that groups of strangers could persuade people to believe statements that were obviously false. Psychologists had also found that research participants were often willing to obey authority figures even when doing so violated their personal beliefs. The Yale studies by Stanley Milgram in 1963 demonstrated that a majority of ordinary citizens would continually shock an innocent man, even up to near-lethal levels, if commanded to do so by someone acting as an authority. The "authority" figure in this case was merely a high-school biology teacher who wore a lab coat and acted in an official manner. The majority of people shocked their victims over and over again despite increasingly desperate pleas to stop.
In my own work, I wanted to explore the fictional notion from William Golding's Lord of the Flies about the power of anonymity to unleash violent behavior. In one experiment from 1969, female students who were made to feel anonymous and given permission for aggression became significantly more hostile than students with their identities intact. Those and a host of other social-psychological studies were showing that human nature was more pliable than previously imagined and more responsive to situational pressures than we cared to acknowledge. In sum, these studies challenged the sacrosanct view that inner determinants of behavior--personality traits, morality, and religious upbringing--directed good people down righteous paths.
Missing from the body of social-science research at the time was the direct confrontation of good versus evil, of good people pitted against the forces inherent in bad situations. It was evident from everyday life that smart people made dumb decisions when they were engaged in mindless groupthink, as in the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion by the smart guys in President John F. Kennedy's cabinet. It was also clear that smart people su.

McNamara, escalated the Vietnam War when they knew, and later admitted, it was not winnable. They were caught up in the mental constraints of cognitive dissonance -- the discomfort from holding two conflicting thoughts -- and were unable to cut bait even though it was the only rational strategy to save lives and face. Those examples, however, with their different personalities, political agendas, and motives, complicated any simple conceptual attempt to understand what went wrong in these situations.

Philip Zimbardo is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University. He is a founder of the National Center for the Psychol-

For years I’ve been interested in a fundamental ques-
tion concerning what I call the psychology of evil: Why
is it that good people do evil deeds? I’ve been interested
in that question since I was a little kid. Growing up in
the ghetto in the South Bronx, I had lots of friends who
I thought were good kids, but for one reason or another
they ended up in serious trouble. They went to jail, they
took drugs, or they did terrible things to other people.
My whole upbringing was focused on trying to under-
stand what could have made them go wrong.
When you grow up in a privileged environment you
want to take credit for the success you see all around, so
you become a dispositionalist. You look for character,
genes, or family legacy to explain things, because you
want to say your father did good things, you did good

tional factors when trying to understand unusual behav-

not working, and you have friends who are selling drugs

do it, because then there’s a sense in which it’s in your
line. Psychologists and social scientists that focus on sit-
uations more often than not come from relatively poor,
immigrant backgrounds. That’s where I came from.
Over the years I’ve asked that question in more and
more refined ways. I began to investigate what specific
kinds of situational variables or processes could make
someone step across that line between good and evil. We
all like to think that the line is impermeable — that peo-
ple who do terrible things like commit murder, treason,
or kidnapping are on the other side of the line — and we
could never get over there. We want to believe that we’re

Milgram selected participants for his experiment by newspaper advertising for male participants to take part in a study of learning at Yale University. The procedure was that the participant was paired with another person and they drew lots to find out who would be the ‘learner’ and who would be the ‘teacher’. The draw was fixed so that the participant was always the teacher, and the learner was one of Milgram’s confederates (pretending to be a real participant).
The learner (a confederate called Mr. Wallace) was taken into a room and had electrodes attached to his arms, and the teacher and researcher went into a room next door that contained an electric shock generator and a row of switches marked from 15 volts (Slight Shock) to 375 volts (Danger: Severe Shock) to 450 volts (XXX).

Procedure:
At the beginning of the experiment, each participant was introduced to another participant, who was actually a confederate of the experimenter (Milgram). They drew straws to determine their roles – learner or teacher – although this was fixed and the confederate was always the learner. There was also an “experimenter” dressed in a grey lab coat, played by an actor (not Milgram).
Two rooms in the Yale Interaction Laboratory were used - one for the learner (with an electric chair) and another for the teacher and experimenter with an electric shock generator.
The “learner” (Mr. Wallace) was strapped to a chair with electrodes. After he has learned a list of word pairs given him to learn, the "teacher" tests him by naming a word and asking the learner to recall its partner/pair from a list of four possible choices.
The teacher is told to administer an electric shock every time the learner makes a mistake, increasing the level of shock each time. There were 30 switches on the shock generator marked from 15 volts (slight shock) to 450 (danger – severe shock).
The learner gave mainly wrong answers (on purpose) and for each of these the teacher gave him an electric shock. When the teacher refused to administer a shock the experimenter was to give a series of orders / prods to ensure they continued. There were 4 prods and if one was not obeyed then the experimenter (Mr. Williams) read out the next prod, and so on.

Results:
65% of all the participants (teachers) continued to the highest level of 450 volts. All the participants continued to 300 volts. Milgram did more than one experiment – he carried out 18 variations of his study. All he did was alter the situation (IV) to see how this affected obedience (DV).
Conclusion:
Ordinary people are likely to follow orders given by an authority figure, even to the extent of killing an innocent human being. Obedience to authority is ingrained in us all from the way.

Visit a U.S. college campus today and you’ll see a more diverse student body than ever before. Over the last 30 years, the number of Hispanic students has risen five-fold, Asian and Pacific Islander enrollment has tripled, black enrollment has risen 150 percent and Native American enrollment has doubled.
But the graduation rate for minority students falls far below the nationwide average. Our colleges and universities are not succeeding at educating students with diverse backgrounds. In an increasingly competitive global economy, our country cannot afford this waste of time, money and talent.
There are solutions to this problem, but they’re found outside the ivory tower. Over the past three years, we visited a dozen minority-serving institutions or MSIs—from Paul Quinn, a historically black college in Dallas, to Salish Kootenai, a tribal college in Montana, and San Diego City College. We learned a number of lessons—all of which run counter to mainstream higher education thinking.
First and most important, these colleges acknowledge that traditionally underrepresented students face challenges that go far beyond paying tuition. These range from family obligations to fear and uncertainty about the meaning of college to “math shame” and speaking English as a second language. In response, the colleges have toppled the traditional hierarchies and responsibilities of faculty, staff, and students. Everyone is expected to understand the challenges.

Abstract This article examines the ethical framing of
employment in contemporary human resource management
(HRM). Using Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition and
classical critical notions of reification, I contrast recogni-
tion and reifying stances on labor. The recognition
approach embeds work in its emotive and social particu-
larity, positively affirming the basic dignity of social
actors. Reifying views, by contrast, exhibit a forgetfulness
of recognition, removing action from its existential and
social moorings, and imagining workers as bundles of
discrete resources or capacities. After discussing why
reification is a problem, I stress that recognition and reifi-
cation embody different ethical standpoints with regards to
organizational practices. Thus, I argue paradoxically that
many current HRM best practices can be maintained while
cultivating an attitude of recognition. If reification is a type
of forgetting, cultivating a recognition attitude involves
processes of ‘‘remembering’’ to foster work relations that
reinforce employee dignity.

Introduction
The rapid growth of Human Resource Management (HRM)
has involved attempts to frame HRM’s role in under-
standing the human consequences of the contemporary
world of work (Heery 2008). Such attempts have generated
discussions around the ethics of HRM (Pinnington et al.
2007), varying from principled and ‘‘purist’’ perspectives
drawn from moral theory and philosophy (Rowan 2000) to
more ‘‘user-friendly’’ approaches that mix ethical-theoret-
ical foundations and formulate managerial guidelines for
practice (Winstanley and Woodall 2000; Heery 2008).
More recent approaches to HRM have begun to emerge
from critical theory, focusing on ideological and exploit-
ative aspects of HRM, and challenging mainstream
approaches to ethics by combining a practice-based
approach with a critical lens (Greenwood 2002).
The growing importance of critical ethical approaches
brings with it an increased focus on ‘‘macro’’ critiques of
HRM (Townley 1993; Islam and Zyphur 2008), calling into
question the ethical grounding of the field in general
(Greenwood 2002). While traditional views frame human
resources as costs to be minimized or resources to be
deployed strategically, critical ethical views highlight the
potentially problematic idea of ‘‘using’’ people (Green-
wood 2002), inherent in such framings. In Simon’s (1951)
seminal work, the employee is defined as one who ‘‘permits
his behavior to be guided by a decision reached by another,
irrespective of his own judgment as to the merits of that

I watched a quick YouTube video and jotted down the dimensions of the bed, the materials I needed, and a mini blue print for how it was going to end up. My notes allowed for me to get everything I needed in one shot at the hardware store and instead of referring back to the video I could just look at my notes. While assembling, I was able to remind myself how certain things went together by looking at my notes allowing for me to complete the bed frame quickly and in an enjoyable way.
While looking at the rubric, I found that the 4 points on the project addressing the course outcomes is most important. it allows for me to understand the main points of the projects before doing it. Also, I believe these will be helpful notes when doing the project to keep me on track of the topic.
Actively listening is something that will be critical while pursuing a business administration degree. It is something that I struggle with and need to work on. For years I’ve been interested in a fundamental ques-
tion concerning what I call the psychology of evil: Why
is it that good people do evil deeds? I’ve been interested
in that question since I was a little kid. Growing up in
the ghetto in the South Bronx, I had lots of friends who
I thought were good kids, but for one reason or another
they ended up in serious trouble. They went to jail, they
took drugs, or they did terrible things to other people.
My whole upbringing was focused on trying to under-
stand what could have made them go wrong.
When you grow up in a privileged environment you
want to take credit for the success you see all around, so
you become a dispositionalist. You look for character,
genes, or family legacy to explain things, because you
want to say your father did good things, you did good
things, and your kid will do good things. Curiously, if
you grow up poor you tend to emphasize external situa-
tional factors when trying to understand unusual behav-
ior. When you look around and you see that your father’s
not working, and you have friends who are selling drugs
or their sisters in prostitution, you don’t want to say it’s
because there’s something inside them that makes them
do it, because then there’s a sense in which it’s in your
line. Psychologists and social scientists that focus on sit-
uations more often than not come from relatively poor,
immigrant backgrounds. That’s where I came from.
Over the years I’ve asked that question in more and
more refined ways. I began to investigate what specific
kinds of situational variables or processes could make
someone step across that line between good and evil. We
all like to think that the line is impermeable — that peo-
ple who do terrible things like commit murder, treason,
or kidnapping are on the other side of the line — and we
could never get over there. We want to believe that we’re
with the good people. My work began by saying, no,
that line is permeable. The reason some people are on
the good side of the line is that they’ve never really been

Milgram selected participants for his experiment by newspaper advertising for male participants to take part in a study of learning at Yale University. The procedure was that the participant was paired with another person and they drew lots to find out who would be the ‘learner’ and who would be the ‘teacher’. The draw was fixed so that the participant was always the teacher, and the learner was one of Milgram’s confederates (pretending to be a real participant).
The learner (a confederate called Mr. Wallace) was taken into a room and had electrodes attached to his arms, and the teacher and researcher went into a room next door that contained an electric shock generator and a row of switches marked from 15 volts (Slight Shock) to 375 volts (Danger: Severe Shock) to 450 volts (XXX).
Milgram's Experiment
Procedure:
At the beginning of the experiment, each participant was introduced to another participant, who was actually a confederate of the experimenter (Milgram). They drew straws to determine their roles – learner or teacher – although this was fixed and the confederate was always the learner. There was also an “experimenter” dressed in a grey lab coat, played by an actor (not Milgram).
Two rooms in the Yale Interaction Laboratory were used - one for the learner (with an electric chair) and another for the teacher and experimenter with an electric shock generator.
The “learner” (Mr. Wallace) was strapped to a chair with electrodes. After he has learned a list of word pairs given him to learn, the "teacher" tests him by naming a word and asking the learner to recall its partner/pair from a list of four possible choices.
The teacher is told to administer an electric shock every time the learner makes a mistake, increasing the level of shock each time. There were 30 switches on the shock generator marked from 15 volts (slight shock) to 450 (danger – severe shock).
The learner gave mainly wrong answers (on purpose) and for each of these the teacher gave him an electric shock. When the teacher refused to administer a shock the experimenter was to give a series of orders / prods to ensure they continued. There were 4 prods and if one was not obeyed then the experimenter (Mr. Williams) read out the next prod, and so on.
Prod 1: please continue.
Prod 2: the experiment requires you to continue.
Prod 3: It is absolutely essential that you continue.
Prod 4: you have no other choice but to continue.
Results:
65% of all the participants (teachers) continued to the highest level of 450 volts. All the participants continued to 300 volts. Milgram did more than one experiment – he carried out 18 variations of his study. All he did was alter the situation (IV) to see how this affected obedience (DV).
Conclusion:
Ordinary people are likely to follow orders given by an authority figure, even to the extent of killing an innocent human being. Obedience to authority is ingrained in us all from the way.

Visit a U.S. college campus today and you’ll see a more diverse student body than ever before. Over the last 30 years, the number of Hispanic students has risen five-fold, Asian and Pacific Islander enrollment has tripled, black enrollment has risen 150 percent and Native American enrollment has doubled.
But the graduation rate for minority students falls far below the nationwide average. Our colleges and universities are not succeeding at educating students with diverse backgrounds. In an increasingly competitive global economy, our country cannot afford this waste of time, money and talent.
There are solutions to this problem, but they’re found outside the ivory tower. Over the past three years, we visited a dozen minority-serving institutions or MSIs—from Paul Quinn, a historically black college in Dallas, to Salish Kootenai, a tribal college in Montana, and San Diego City College. We learned a number of lessons—all of which run counter to mainstream higher education thinking.
First and most important, these colleges acknowledge that traditionally underrepresented students face challenges that go far beyond paying tuition. These range from family obligations to fear and uncertainty about the meaning of college to “math shame” and speaking English as a second language. In response, the colleges have toppled the traditional hierarchies and responsibilities of faculty, staff, and students. Everyone is expected to understand the challenges.

Abstract This article examines the ethical framing of
employment in contemporary human resource management
(HRM). Using Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition and
classical critical notions of reification, I contrast recogni-
tion and reifying stances on labor. The recognition
approach embeds work in its emotive and social particu-
larity, positively affirming the basic dignity of social
actors. Reifying views, by contrast, exhibit a forgetfulness
of recognition, removing action from its existential and
social moorings, and imagining workers as bundles of
discrete resources or capacities. After discussing why
reification is a problem, I stress that recognition and reifi-
cation embody different ethical standpoints with regards to
organizational practices. Thus, I argue paradoxically that
many current HRM best practices can be maintained while
cultivating an attitude of recognition. If reification is a type
of forgetting, cultivating a recognition attitude involves
processes of ‘‘remembering’’ to foster work relations that
reinforce employee dignity.

Introduction
The rapid growth of Human Resource Management (HRM)
has involved attempts to frame HRM’s role in under-
standing the human consequences of the contemporary
world of work (Heery 2008). Such attempts have generated
discussions around the ethics of HRM (Pinnington et al.
2007), varying from principled and ‘‘purist’’ perspectives
drawn from moral theory and philosophy (Rowan 2000) to
more ‘‘user-friendly’’ approaches that mix ethical-theoret-
ical foundations and formulate managerial guidelines for
practice (Winstanley and Woodall 2000; Heery 2008).
More recent approaches to HRM have begun to emerge
from critical theory, focusing on ideological and exploit-
ative aspects of HRM, and challenging mainstream
approaches to ethics by combining a practice-based
approach with a critical lens (Greenwood 2002).
The growing importance of critical ethical approaches
brings with it an increased focus on ‘‘macro’’ critiques of
HRM (Townley 1993; Islam and Zyphur 2008), calling into
question the ethical grounding of the field in general
(Greenwood 2002). While traditional views frame human
resources as costs to be minimized or resources to be
deployed strategically, critical ethical views highlight the
potentially problematic idea of ‘‘using’’ people (Green-
wood 2002), inherent in such framings. In Simon’s (1951)
seminal work, the employee is defined as one who ‘‘permits
his behavior to be guided by a decision reached by another,
irrespective of his own judgment as to the merits of that
decision’’ (p. 21), a characte.

faster performance. To her bewilderment, nothing seemed to work. The project quickly became bogged down due

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the language acquisition approaches whose conceptions of language acquisitions are transferred to
learning environments through adjustments made on the basis of application methods. The paper also discussed their similarities and differ-
ences. Different approaches to language acquisition in various disciplines, different views, and perceptions of it have been developed. There are
some approaches completely distinct from others, while there are some others affected by different perspectives. In addition to the language
acquisition approaches mentioned above, the paper delineated what literacy skills are and what kind of hierarchical order is followed by the
development of these skills. The study, on one hand, deliberated children’s innate abilities and their acquired skills. by examining the reading
and writing methods and from which approach they have been affected. The study, on the other hand, summarized the views of Vygotsky,
whose contributions to learning in general and language acquisition in particular are better understood today. In brief, this paper discusses and
explains the language acquisition approaches and the development process of children’s literacy skills.

Literacy skills are of vital importance for all people and en-
able children to get to know the life and interact with their
environment and other people, leading the way to a success-
ful career. Starting primary school is certainly a new chap-
ter and an exciting step for both students and their families.
First-grade students attending elementary school which is

Abstract
Resume screening is the first hurdle applicants typically face
when they apply for a job. Despite the many empirical
studies showing bias at the resume‐screening stage, fairness
at this funnelling stage has not been reviewed systematically.
In this paper, a three‐stage model of biased resume screening
is presented. We first discuss relevant theoretical perspec-
tives (e.g., job market signalling and impression formation
theories) to explain why resume screening is vulnerable to
biased decision‐making and ethnic discrimination in particu-
lar. On the basis of the best available evidence, we consider
contingencies of ethnic discrimination in the applicant, the
decision‐maker, and the broader context (e.g., organisation),
as well as the effectiveness of interventions that might
counter ethnic bias in resume screening. The paper ends with
a critical agenda for further research and practice.

Despite decades of legislation and HR professionals' commitment to equal opportunities, ethnic minority members
still suffer a weaker labour market position compared with equally qualified majorities (Shen, Chanda, D'Netto, &
Monga, 2009). Human capital factors may explain some of the differences in hiring outcomes, but discrimination
has also been put forward as a possible explanation (Derous & Ryan, 2018; Hoque & Noon, 1999). Ethnic minorities,
for instance, still need to complete 50% more applications to get invited for a job interview when compared with
equally qualified ethnic majorities (Zschirnt & Ruedin, 2016).

Recall that the goal of the Kyoto Protocol was to cut developed countries’ carbon dioxide emission to about 5% to 7% below 1990 levels by 2012. This was a crucial first goal, but the IPCC is calling for carbon dioxide emissions in 2050 to be 60%less than the carbon dioxide emission in 1990.
Many countries were previously condemning the United States because the Bush administration and Congress refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Although the U.S. population in 2010 was only 5% of the world population, 18% of world carbon dioxide emissions that year was produced by the United States (see Table 3). The Obama administration has taken a very different path, assumed responsibility, and took numerous actions that led to a significant decrease of the CO2 emission in the US. This course again changed dramatically by the Trump administration.
Critics of the Kyoto Protocol say that a fairer pact would be for all countries to commit to the same level of carbon dioxide emission per person. Recommendations are by 0.9 metric ton per person in 2050. Average annual carbon dioxide emission in 2010 for developing countries was 2.7 metric ton per person, which is 3 times the IPCC’s recommendation. However, the average annual carbon dioxide emission for developed countries was 10.2 metric tons per person, for US 18 (!) metric tons per person, far above IPCC’s recommendation (see Table 4). GNP, the gross national product, is a measure of a country’s economic strength.
With annual carbon dioxide emissions of 18.1 metric tons per person in 2010, the United States would have to reduce emissions by 95% to meet the standard of 0.9 metric ton per person. Imagine driving your car, heating and cooling your home, using your appliances, using your computer, using your lights, and watching TV only 5% (one-twentieth) of the time that you currently do.

In the strongest action ever taken in the United States to combat climate change, in August 2015 President Obama unveiled a set of environmental actions devised to sharply cut planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions from the nation’s power plants and ultimately transform America’s electricity industry. These new rules alone will not be enough to shave off that future described above. But experts say that if the rules are combined with similar action from the world’s other major economies, as well as additional action by the future administrations, emissions could level off enough to prevent the worst effects of climate change.

PHILIP ZIMBARDO: But the next day, on the morning of the next day, the prisoners rebelled. And what the guards did, they came to me and said, “The prisoners are rebelling. What are we going to do?” I said, “It's your prison, whatever you want. I will do it, but you've got to tell me.” And they said, “We have to treat force with force,” so they broke down the doors -- GUARD 1: (Indiscernible) take your bed (Indiscernible). DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: -- stripped the prisoners naked, dragged them out. Some of them, they tied up their feet. They put them in solitary confinement which is a tiny little hole in the closet oh, about this big and dark, and they said, “At this point, everything but breathing air is a privilege. Food is a privilege. Clothes are a privilege. Having a bed is a privilege.” And so the guards began to say, “Here are the new rules. And the new rules are you are dangerous and we are going to treat you as such.” And then, it began to escalate. Each day, the level of abuse, aggression, violence against prisoners got more and more extreme. And so the guards changed to become more dominant, and, you see, it's all about power. It's the whole institution that empowers the guards who are the representative of this institution called prison to do whatever is necessary to prevent prisoners from escaping, maintain law and order.
- 2. GUARD 2: Keep going. Once I was blind. PRISONER 1: (Singing) Once, I was blind. DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: The way -- the direction it took was having them engage in ever more humiliating tasks, cleaning toilet bowls out with their bare hands, taking their blankets and putting them in dirt with nettles, and the prisoner had to spend hours taking the nettles out if they wanted to, you know, sleep. And it's essentially saying, “We have the power to create a totally arbitrary, mindless environment, and that's the environment you have to live in.” So some of the prisoners are now crushed. And in 36 hours, the first kid has an emotional breakdown meaning crying, screaming, irrational thinking. PRISONER 2: I've got to go to a doctor, anything. I want out! I want out now! Goddamnit! DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: And we have to release him. In 5 days, we had to release five of the prisoners because the situation was so overwhelming. What about the kids who didn't break down? They became zombies, zombies in the sense that they became almost all mindlessly obedient. Whatever the guards would say, they did. Do this, they did. “Do 10 pushups. Do 20 pushups. Step on him while he's doing pushups. Tell him he's a bastard.” PRISONERS: Prisoner 819 did a bad thing. Prisoner 819 did a bad thing. DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: It was horrifying to see the kids break down. It was even more horrifying to see these other kids just become mindlessly obedient. PRISONERS: Because of what prisoner 819 did, my cell is a
- 3. mess. Because of what prisoner 819 did, my cell is a mess. DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: Again, we have to keep remembering these are kids who start out being rebels against society, everyone of them, and now, they are just pawns. Stanford Prison Experiment Transcript Classic Studies in Psychology 2 Stanford Prison Experiment Transcript Speakers: Dr. Steve Taylor, Dr. Philip Zimbardo, Male (Music) DR. STEVE TAYLOR: If you go to Google and type in the word "Experiment," one of the first things you'll see is the Stanford Prison Experiment. It's probably the best known psychological study of all time. It all began in West Coast America on a summer's day back in 1971, when college students grew their hair long, protested against their government, were pro-peace and totally anti- authority, or so we thought until Philip Zimbardo. (Music) DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: So the Stanford Prison Study very
- 4. simply is an attempt to see what happens when you put really good people in a bad place. We put an ad in the city newspaper, wanted students for study of prison life lasting up to 2 weeks. We're going to pay you $15 a day. This is back in 1971. It's pretty good money, and we picked 75 volunteers, gave them a battery of psychological tests, and we picked two dozen who in all dimensions were normal and healthy to begin with. And then we did what is critical for all research. We randomly assigned half of them to the role of playing guards or the role of playing prisoners. It's literally like flipping a coin. And then what we did is we told the guards, “Come down a day early,” and we had them pick their own uniform. We had them help set up the prison so they'd feel like it was their prison, and the prisoners were coming into their place. The prisoners, we simply said, “Wait at home in the dormitories.” Well, what we didn't tell them, which is a little bit of the deception of omission, is that they were arrested by the city police. MALE: Right there, they took me out the door. They put my hands against the car. It was a real cop car. It was a real policeman that took me to the police station, the basement of the police station. DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: I had told the policeman to put a blindfold on the prisoners. Since they had never been arrested, they didn't know that doesn't happen. The reason for the blindfold is my assistants would come, put them in our car, bring them down to our prison, and they'd be in our prison now blindfolded. The guards would strip them naked, delouse them, pretending that they were lice. It's kind of a degradation ritual. And after the first day, I was about to end it because nothing was happening.

PHILIP ZIMBARDO: The guards tested their control over the prisoners by making them write a letter home. GUARD 1: No need to visit. It's seventh heaven. Yours truly. PRISONERS: Yours truly. GUARD 1: Your loving son. PRISONERS: Your loving son. GUARD 1: And put the name there that your mother gave you. DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: The results were surprising because I did not expect the transformation of good kids into pathological prisoners or abusing guards to occur so quickly and so extremely. That is, we had to assume from all other research, you know, that there would be verbal abuse. They would make fun of them. There would be teasing. There would be bullying, but not this kind of -- I would call it creative evil. That is, thinking about ways to demean, degrade, dehumanize other human beings, and the critical thing there in that transformation
- 6. is becoming the role or the role becoming you. It's suspending your usual morality, your usual thinking. GUARD 2: You really become that person once you put on that khaki uniform. You put on the glasses. You put on -- you take the nightstick and, you know, you act the part. DR. STEVE TAYLOR: So what Zimbardo's research demonstrates so dramatically, is that situations can affect us more than we think. It can often outweigh individual characteristics. So if we're going to use psychology to try to reduce the possibility for evil, maybe we need to focus more on systems and less on individuals. But should the research ever have been done? After all, the participants suffered real harm. DR. PHILIP ZIMBARDO: In hindsight, again, I have mixed feelings about the study. Should it have been done? Well, not if it means suffering of anybody. Would I like my son to have been in that study? No. On the other hand, does it tell us something vital about human nature that has enduring value? There, I have to say yes. It's been used in lots of prisons as a training device to get people to be sensitized to how easy it is to abuse power. So in that sense, it has widespread enduring value, therefore, I'm saying, well, I'm glad I did it.
